Looks very good! Has serious potential to be better than the IOS Silent Hunter! But two questions:
European release? (UK specifically)
Realistic or arcade?
But brilliant work so far! Good luck.
Thank you!
It will be available worldwide. And it will be somewhat realistic. Definitely not arcade. But of course there are some concessions we must make to have it playable with smartphones.
Here's some sneak preview of diving the sub:

Good job!
Thank you neal.
Someone ask us isn't it a bit ... weird to have a subsim on a casual platform?
:o I say no. It makes sense.
Dive! Dive! Dive!

Indeed it does.
Real shortage of subsims on the mobile platform.

Nice video and great effort.
However...you may want to adjust the depth gauge so that it takes into account the draft of the boat at all times. Shells of Fury made the mistake of not taking draft into account and it was too easy to bottom the boat accidentally because of it.
Hi Hinrich
Thank you for the advice.
Xaron made a screenshoot from his android smartphone.

Looking great so far, two small things you might want to address US subs measured their depth in feet not metres and max rudder angle should be about 35 degrees.

Indeed it does.
Real shortage of subsims on the mobile platform.
yea there shore is,But there is one thats holding me over it is called U-48 on google market.
Silent Depth looks awsome I will be looking for it.
Merry christmas guys! And thanks for your continuous interest!
@Sonarman: You're right, we'll change that!
@subsearch87: There will be different missions. Due to the nature of mobile devices I can imagine no one wants to just drive around for a few hours so well will place the player right in front of some action.
I have U-48 on my phone as well and like it. It's a nice little game!
Looking good! U-48 is fun but limited. I'm sure Silent Depth will be fun to play!
We think about a Techdemo for playing around and testing.
It's important for us to see how it works on different Smartphones.
But we are a little afraid that someone will hijack ideas before the game is ready.
Do you want a testing version, or better wait for the ready game?
It goes on.

Xaron finished the torpedo firing solutions.
Choose front or back tubes.
After pressing the target marker it needs some seconds for a solution.
When it is finish the firing button will be green.
For a direct shoot choose the tube and press fire.

Nice to see that another mobile sub sim is in the works now and it's funny that it also comes from germany. Another funny thing is I've bought one of your 3D models (SungMeta or what ever your profile name on turbosquid was in 2009) for an early version of my sub sim and I've always wondered if you are also working on a sub sim. :)
That's the current state of my graphics btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ_YFmgWCMY
:o Oh well... now that looks awesome!
Thanks, it was a long way to go till it looked like this…
And when you look on the older screenshots on the website you will see that in the beginning it really looked comparable to yours.
Hehe, yes I see. Well we just go for a little less waves and not a full sim which might be a bit too heavy for smartphones. ;)
Smartphones since the iPhone 3GS can handle a lot. The hard part is to learn and discover all the tricks and the traps of the hardware.
One problem is to support many different devices. If I would try to support android from the beginning I would run into way too much problems because of all the different hardware. That's why I'll release on iOS and then desktop first.
One of the benefits of cross platform games for mobile and desktop is that you could share the saved game status between devices. That's the plan that I have with WOTA: play at home, save and continue on the train or wherever you want. I'll guess you will do something similar?
Yes, modern smartphones can handle a lot, the question I've asked myself was, if it makes sense. I mean the graphics part definitely but a complex sim might not be the target scope for mobile gamers. PC games are a complete different beast here!
So we decided to make it more a lightweight sim, and we don't think anyone would like to drive hours on a mobile phone. Again, that is different to PC gaming.
Sharing saved game states is a thing we still think about it but don't think it's very that necessary for our game. We don't even know if it makes sense to create a desktop version for our game...
Here is the torpedo run video.

Hi all,
regarding the depth gauge we scratch our heads about the used units for the balao class subs for instance.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e53/klehmann/DSC04190sm.jpg
I always thought they where measured in feet but the picture above shows values up to 165 which is more likely that they used fathoms?
Thanks for any hints!
Julhelm
08-05-13, 05:49 AM
Make it in feet since that is the most intuitive. That said, I think you should look over your GUI and make the controls larger and more readable. Right now it looks very cluttered as a result of trying to cram in everything at once on the screen.
Silent Hunter 1 had a very nice, clean, readable GUI that would translate almost perfectly to a smartphone.
Your game looks pretty good though. Is it going to be mainly 3rd person based gameplay?
Hi Julhelm,
look at that video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SaGMfjaLcA i made today.
We think a lot about the GUI and it is now very easy to play with.
Julhelm
08-06-13, 09:54 AM
I dunno, from looking at the video it looks like you had to fiddle around with some of the controls. And some people have pretty fat fingers too so you don't want to accidentally hit the wrong spot. Especially on something like the depth gauge that could be fatal.
I didn't fiddle. It is very difficult holding the camera and playing the game.
All works fine and the buttons are big enough even for fat fingers :D
It will be truly the best GUI you ever has seen on a smartphone subsim. :salute:

Hehe, I understand your point. What's still missing is multitouch support which will be in. So there might be the possibility that one of (the fat) fingers already touches it anywhere and with just single touch you won't be able to control anything.
All in all, Sung already said that he was holding the cam in one hand while holding the phone in the other and actually I don't know how he was able to control anything at all, must be some finger acrobatic stuff I'm not aware off! :timeout:
And touching the "wrong" depth on the depth gauge doesn't mean anything. It takes time to reach a decent depth as this doesn't sink like a stone! You always see the entered depth (white) and see the current (red)
Some buttheads cracked and defaced our site and deleted everything. Not a problem though because no source code was harmed but all screenshots are gone. Just for case anyone is wondering about it. ;)

That sucks. But ample time to post some new ones then.
We had made a lot of improvements for SD. The best one is the better FPS with shaders, particles, bump and other trallala. Xaron wrote a complete new code. I think you will be also impressed as we look on our testing smartphones

From Samsung S3 (Mali chip)
This is complete new code. The speed was raising from 18 - 22 fps up to 40-45 fps on that chipset. A very huge step. Btw, we can now handle Shaders etc. :)
Good news. I tested on a old Samsung Galaxy-Y. SD runs with 32 fps.
Xaron recieved last week a brand new Windows Phone for testing.
It looks good that we can run SD on the most Smartphones on market. :arrgh!:

When do we get to see things go boom? Oh, and are you planning some sort of ingame map like in AoD?
Looks nice so far!

Thanks! Things go boom almost now, well at least the Torpedos run into their target. And yes there will be a ingame map. Especially for the free patrol mission you can just patrol on the map to sink everything you see but beware of destroyers. ;)
BTW: we revived our forum which was hacked unfortunately but I will post some kind of a dev diary for anyone who's interested. Of course we will show our progress here as well!
Testing Xarons (1WO) wave code on the horrible mali chipset Samsung S3.

Those waves look nice. Heightmap displacement or FFT?
Thanks, that's just FFT. :)
Right guys, maybe it's time to ask the community about some stuff you want in...
The technics so far are working fine, so you can drive, dive, use the periscope (map is coming next) and target enemy ships and fire torpedos (including lead angle calculation done by the lead angle calculator).
The game itself plays in the Pacific and we would like to add more than just water. How important do you see something like a sea floor? I know the Pacific is pretty deep but there are places where it's not that deep and I think it would be nice to have more than water below the surface?
What features would you like to see? And please keep in mind it's a smart phone game. ;)

Simple terrain like in the original Silent Hunter would be nice, and kind of essential for operating in Japanese littoral waters.
Simple terrain should be possible. At the moment there is only the home base midway atoll finish. Question: Any one knows some good photos of the facilities on midway?
At the SH there is a lot of lighthouses and heavy complexes on the base. I doubt that is correct?
Julhelm

There's an entire harbor taking up most of the eastern part of the main island, with the eastern island being mostly an airfield. When I modelled it for Pacific Fleet I googled for a lot of WW2 maps of it. It has been much rebuilt since then and now looks nothing like it did then.
I saw that photos in the net. But i found only some pics from Henderson Airfield on midway. In Silent Hunter the harbor is giant with that many cranes and buildings. I modeled the both islands in the midway atoll and the deeps.
I must do much more DD ;)

If I were you I'd just focus on making it look good vs historically accurate. If it looks right it is right.
Well we just make it look good and historical accurate. :hmmm:
The John Ford Movie of the battle shows some buildings. Long time ago that I have seen it. Possibly useful.

You are using SilverLining too. Its clouds can have a strong impact on the performance on older devices.
True, but we don't target older devices actually. On my mid class Xperia Android phone it runs pretty well. Sure something like an iPhone 3gs might be a bit ... outdated? Devices which came out after 2012 should be able to handle this pretty good. I even had it run on an old HTC Desire (not HD). Dead slow but it was playable.

On 3GS it runs comparable good. It depends on screen size & resolution vs possible GPU fill rate.
The problem is that some of the devices that where still sold till september 2013 can't handle it. Same for most sold generation of the iPod, the iPod touch 4 (sold from late 2010 till late 2012)
Our main target audience is age 35-45 they might not buy a new phone or tablet every 2 years.
The most important market is the USA - the 3GS was the best selling iPhone there till september 2012. And iOS is much stronger there than anywhere else. When you live in germany you often won't realize that because germany is android country.

Good to know. The most "crap" device I have is an iPod Touch 4 which should fit pretty in that low spec thing. Will use TestflightApp (http://www.testflightapp.com) anyway to catch more devices.

Well especially the US are known for their usage of contracts which run out every 2 years. I can't imagine that so many over there still use a 3gs. I know quite a few Americans.

Hehe indeed. Germany is Android country. Our game might be more interesting for americans as we will have us submarines in the Pacific. Well anyway, we'll release it for iOS/Android and WP8 together.
Well anyway, we'll release it for iOS/Android and WP8 together.
I won't release WOTA for Android or WP8 before the desktop version is out. And even then it is not 100% certain that I will ever do that.
In other words: Android market is all yours without any competition by WOTA :salute:
A current statistic shows 25.5% of the iOS devices used by mobile gamers last month are those with fill rate issues (which is the first retina generation: iPad 1, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th Gen.)
Don't forget that you could buy a new 3GS with a contract just 13 months ago. So there are still many of them out there.
So far we have about 35-40 fps on a Samsung S3, about 50-60 on a Nexus 4. Will check out the rates on a 3gs next.

Oh v-i-c,
i didn't think that we must fear WOTA. Silent Depth will be a really good game. The game runs and looks outstanding and we have a nice playable GUI.
I wish you all the best by developing WOTA but Silent Depth will be a success on Android, iOS and Windows Phones.

Great picture. I am pleased to see this project progress. However, there is one correction I would like to point out. The bridge sight tab is listed as "UZO". The acronym is German for U-Boot Zieloptik and since this is an American sim, it would be more appropriate to label it "TBT" for Target Bearing Transmitter, which is accurate. :D
Thanks Hinrich, we fixed it to Target Bearing Transmitter TBT.
We do also some changes on the boot and the GUI.
Yep, we've changed that, thanks!
The periscope is not fixed anymore as well so it moves up and down like it should. ;)
http://www.silentdepth.com/dl/screenshots/b028-1s.jpg

Added some zoom (two fingers zoom like usual - shot taken from an Android device):
http://www.silentdepth.com/dl/screenshots/b029-zoom.jpg
You might notice as well that the engine telegraph has changed, we've added "stand" and "flank" which were missing previously.
The red line on the depth gauge is the periscope depth. First click on the depth gauge deeper than periscope depth will just targeting to periscope depth. Second click goes deeper. That makes it easier to reach periscope levels.
More screens! Worked on a lot of details, for most of them a video would be much better I guess.
