Hi Y'all, wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem; I have two Windows machines. One runs Windows7 32 bit, the other Windows7 64 bit ( which may not be relevant) I never have a problem installing games on the 32bit, but on the 64bit, some games (SH5 included) take an hour or more to finish the install (if I have the patience to wait that is). I get short bursts of disk activity then nothing at all for maybe twenty minutes or more. If I take the disk out I eventually get the message that the device is not ready. In the case of SH5 I have tried two different disks with the same result. Other games install just fine and with no delays, but a significant number do not. Any ideas what the problem might be please? PS both machines have ESET AV Thank ' ee kindly -Frustrated from Finchley
Hi SW. I don't have Windows 7 yet but as I understand, just run SH5 on your 32 bit 7 install. Less problems. And don't jump on Windows 8. I was told at the MS store at our local Mall that it is not a gaming OS yet. MS is actually still working on it and that's whya they want you connected to the internet when you run 8 so they can do improvements and upgrades. LOL
While picking the brrains of the guys here at our CompUSA store, I asked the question of which is better.... 7s 32 or 64 bit version. The young lad I talked to said no one really needs the 64 bit version. 64 bit will do everything 32 bit will.... except run many of the older games. I know guys here do run SH5 on 64 bit 7 but not usre what they do. It could be Compatability Mode with Windows XP but not sure.
Good luck, and sink em all. :salute:

GT - hello, thank you for answering.
My 32bit machine does not have a good enough graphics card to run SH5, and the RAM is maxed out at 2GB - which is why I built the gaming machine.
No, indeed, I will not be jumping on W8 - or even inching toward it. I can see the way things are going and it doesn't look good for gamers. I shall stay with W7 which I am very happy with. :)
The reason many folk go for 64 bit processors ( as I understand it) is because the amount of RAM is not limited to 4GB as it is with x86 architecture, and the 64 bit OS takes advantage of that capability and so you have double the data processing speed.
I was pleasantly suprised to find that the 64 bit computer runs quite a few of my old games - RHEMS, Myst series, Stronghold, Settlers2 to name just a few. And of course there is the option of a virtual XP capability which widens the field.
To get back to my problem, I uninstalled SH5 tonight because it would not initiate at start-up - nothing was happening, so I figured something had got corrupted and a re-install was called for. Then I got the annoying start-stop behaviour from the disk, and was going nowhere with that, except upsetting the machine, so I changed tactics and instead of asking it to install on to another logical drive, I allowed it to install to the default location in C: - and it installed just fine, which I found to be interesting. I noticed that in resource monitor, Eset and search index processes were regulalrly appearing in the active list as the install progressed. Maybe there is a clue there - perhaps searchindex.exe expects it all to be in C:, dunno, just surmising really. However, my troubles have not gone away because after the patch and update to 1.2 version, logging into Uplay etc, the game is still not initiating from the desktop - I just get a brief flash of the completed updater window and then nothing. If I go to Ubisoft in Program Filesx86 and click in the Launcher - nothing.
Short of reinstalling my OS - which I am not about to do - I cannot see what else to try, though I haven't yet done a shutdown and restart from cold. Fed up, up, UP!

yay - sorted! It was probably the launcher all along and not the game at all (sigh). I uninstalled the launcher, cleared out the remnant files and then d/l'd a fresh copy - voila! Up'n running... and now it's bedtime; only wasted the entire evening.. ho hum. Night all; happy me :D
Good for you, you got it running. When SH5 checked my computer, and from what is said on the box, the 8800 GT GFX card is the oldest card that will run SH5. If you can at least upgrade to one of them you should be fine. I have a Zotac GF 8800GT/XT 1GB card that runs SH5 just fine.

the card on the 32bit machine is a Geforce 7600 GT, and, as you say, it just isn't up to the task - but it is fine for casual games, docs, videos etc, so I will leave it be - the games machine is much beefier all round. :)

That's because uplay has the game tied to the steam launcher. I had sh5 for steam and then got the amazon download one. My uplay still had it set to steam. What I did was to go to my uplay library that shows all of the games you own from them. Found two icons for sh5. One was the steam and the other was for the amazon. See if you got two icons of the game in your library.
