I'm confused about what the purpose of the snorkel is. All I see is that my flag is displayed if I hit the X key, which is cool, when the snorkel is up.

I thought that maybe the snorkel allowed the diesel engine to breath so you could run on diesel power under water... then I thought it would allow oxygen into the sub... but neither of these happen on my sub.

If I go to snorkel depth, I don't see anything different.. for example, after being under water for several hours, and my CO2 was going up. So I thought I would go to snorkel depth and give my guys some oxygen. Well this didn't help, as the CO2 stayed the same.

Does the game model the snorkel and if so when would I use it and what is it supposed to do?

I'm using the latest Living Silent Hunter mod, but nothing really other than that.

Hi Jeff. The snorkel allows you to use your diesel engines, recharge your batteries and ventilate the boat. Snorkel depth is the proper depth, 12 meters, for the device to work. The game models the snorkel, although some what unrealistically. In game you can use it at any speed but in real life any more than 5 or 6 knots would snap it off. Also in game you can use it in any sea state but not so in real conditions. As to when you would use it, mostly when you want to stay submerged, but need to charge batteries.

I can only say that it works perfectly with GWX. I have not used the Living Silent Hunter mod so I can't say if that's the problem. Anybody?:hmmm:

Snorkels do not historically appear until June or July 1944 so if your game date is earlier you don't have one fitted. Deploying it and running at snorkel depth does exactly nothing.

Once fitted, it works as U Crank describes, at least in GWX.

ahh I see I'm just starting out in 1939 and have restarted several careers due to inability to pay attention to the road (beaches lol) while on accelerated time :(

So in short, I never made it past 1940 ish or so.. and in fact just tonight I am starting my 4th new career!

Thanks for the information, I understand that I don't have a snorkel until 1944, so now I get a flag :)
