Onboard graphics? I will probably run it, but it will never come close to a dedicated graphics card.

I watched Run Silent Run Deep today and it sold me onto SH4.
You think it'll run but won't be at top quality. (if I understood that correctly)
It is a laptop if that makes a difference.

Don't get scared off just yet. You're computer outperforms my old one that I started playing sh4 on. It played well, but I had to have the graphics turned down a little. There was some lag at higher time compression. Have fun.

I'm not scared off. I'm just getting started.
I'll find a cheap copy on amazon and get it sometime soon and test it out.
The only thing that holds me back when testing SH5 is the Graphics Card. So I have hope on SH4.
I just love anything about The Pacific War. When you're a WW2 buff like me you just feel like they've overdone movies/games/books about the war in Europe.
Try to get the Gold Edition version on disc, and Install the game on your C drive, not in the programs folder. These two things will same you some headaches down the road.
Good Hunting. :salute:

Does it matter if I have the Gold edition? I'd planned on getting a 3$ copy of vanilla stock on amazon and patching it.

The Gold edition will bring the game version up to 1.5, which is the most recent version. You'll find that most of the mods for SH4 here are designed to be used with 1.5 (not all mods, certainly, but most). But even the Gold edition isn't too expensive, so don't worry.

I just bought the gold edition it comes with the U-boat addon so there's no need to patch it, it cost £12.02 with delivery so i'm quite happy.:)

Hello Red October1984,
I ran SH4 on a HP lap with 2g ram (most of that running the OP system). I ran SH4 1.4 and it was just a tad slow with the mouse. Other than that it was fine. I just couldn't run max graphics. Which, by the way, is also OK. The display was 1440x900 and I used 1152x864 or something like that and it looked fine.
Just experiment with different settings to get the most out of it. You'll want to save a bit of power for some mods as well so that's why I suggest going easy on the graphics at first until you've got everything you need to play.
Good luck and welcome in.

So is Sh4 a game where the non gold version is 1.4 and the gold is 1.5 and the mods are for 1.5?
If I want mods, I have to get gold? Is there a 1.5 patch out there that patches it without UBM?
I really am not that interested in UBM. I have SH2 and 3 with GWX so I am tired of U-boats

Not necessarily. There are still some mods out there that were made for 1.4, but they are few and far between
If I want mods, I have to get gold? Is there a 1.5 patch out there that patches it without UBM?
No. U-Boat Missions is 1.5, and there is nothing in between.

UBM 1.5 does a whole lot more than just add u-boats. It also fixes several problems earlier versions of the game had. You don't have to play the u-boat side; that's only part of it. The Pacific game is great, and as noted the latest and best mods were made for 1.5.

Ok. What about TMO? That one caught my eye. And the RSRD campaign.
I'm assuming 1.5 so I'll go for the gold edition.
TO AMAZON! AWAY!!!
Even though I'm just changing what's in my cart. :D
EDIT: GOOD GOD THEY WANT 30$. My order went from 20$ to 50$ with the addition of SH4G. Is there a cheaper seller out there? Digital Download is out of the question.

Unfortunately it's four years old now and unlike SH3 hasn't been re-released. All you can do is be patient and keep your eyes open. I checked eBay and they're no better.

Ive checked all around. Its weird how Sh4 doesnt appear on any major store website. The only place to buy it is Amazon or Ebay.
Do retail versions exist? :hmmm:
I think that i'm going to wait on Sh4 then. I could get the v1.4 version but if i wanted to mod, I'd have to buy the U-Boat Missions addon which i think is stupid. They should have a v1.5 patch without the UBM. It should be exactly an Add-on and nothing else like an extra patch.
Like a few of the subsimmers, I'm gettin real tired of this Ubisoft crap. :shifty:

Unless you luck out and catch a good deal on EBay or something, the best deals are digital download, unfortunately. If it is out of the question for you, there may be no other choice but to pay the extra cost of a physical copy.

It's weird. I picked up a newer copy of SH3 at a local office store. It was just sitting there. Amazon does show a re-release for SH4, but it seems to be the original and not the Gold version.

They chose to put a lot of extra work into it, and it would seem they didn't want to release two versions. There was some demand for the u-boats at the time.

You may want to look at this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=198079) regarding a "downloadable" copy of SH4. I've never used Steam, so I can't confirm the version they give you. The old saying "You get what you pay for" may ring true.
There is an Amazon site from the UK that's selling the disc version of SH4 Gold Edition for $8 (just do a Google search).
There's also this iNetVideo (http://www.inetvideo.com/catalog/product/view/id/53992/s/silent-hunter-iv-wolves-of-the-pacific-gold-edition-used-on-pc-at-inetvideo/) site that has it for 8.99. The disc copy is shipped from the U.S. I don't know how long this price or availability will hold out, but as of this writing the offer is still good. Got mine in 4 days, exactly as ordered.
I just checked the link and it's still good.
I've always felt the 1.4 version folks have had the raw end of the deal. It took me quite a while to move up to v1.5. The main reason being, I didn't give a tinkers damn about seeing the German's in the Pacific! The fact that UbiSoft had us pay for the 5th patch is BULL. That's why I've tried to always make mods for both versions. No one should be left out trying to mod their game. However, the fact that a complete "Gold Edition" 1.5 CD version can be bought for less than 10 dollars should entice any submarine gamer.

I think I'll hold off for now and get it in a few months. I don't want a UK version and I won't trust many other websites, so I'll just sit tight and wait.
I will be getting Dangerous Waters though so I'll have a new game to play either way.

Holding off is ok, but I wouldn't wait and think UbiSoft is going to give you a better deal than what's on the market now.
I bought the iNetVideo disk because I purchased the original 1.0 version of the game back in 2007.....bought the Direct2Drive version of 1.5 when it became available (reluctantly). Spent $50.00 on the original, spent $10.00 on the upgrade. The point is, the $8.99 for the complete package is a bargain! You get a hand held disk that's from UbiSoft, and you don't have to fool with the fact that Direct2Drive was sold to another company, and you'll have to jump through their hoops to get the upgrade download that you bought in the first damn place!
Do what you want, but the iNetVideo is the best option today. You're pissing into the wind if you think UbiSoft is going to do better in the future.

I don't think Ubisoft knows what a better deal is.
I'll watch Amazon.

That's exactly the reason I never ordered the addon, until now. Mine's on the way. Does this contain the map and recognition poster that came with my original SHIV game? I still have those anyway but just wondered. Also will it install over my game and update to 1.5 or do I need to uninstall 1.4 first?
Sailor Steve
11-14-12, 05:54 PM
Did you buy the Gold version or just the UBM 1.5? UBM is made to install on top of SH4, and doesn't stand alone. Gold is an all-in-one that works by itself. It may not even overwrite the original SH4, but make its own separate installation. I'm not sure, as it's been four years since I got it, and I've never gone back to stock.
And no, I don't think either version has a paper map or poster, just the digital version.

I bought the gold version from iNetVideo. I wouldn't really be too disappointed if the map and poster were not included since it was only $8.99. The question of installation only has to do with save games. Not a big issue as I'm pretty early in my current game.
