Crews abandoned ship ship amid 18-foot waves and 40 mile per hour winds on Monday.
The ship was used for classic adventure films and was 90 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C., when it sank.
Crews boarded two lifeboats and hoped for rescue. The Coast Guard said it has “diminished search and rescue capabilities” as the Category 1 hurricane batters the U.S. East Coast. More sea rescues prompted by Sandy were reported in Delaware Bay. Wearing special cold-weather survival suits, crew members were awaiting rescue Monday in lifeboats designed to hold 25 people.

The Bounty departed New London, Connecticut, for St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 25, according to the ship's Facebook page.
Facebook postings bearing that date say things such as "I'm sure that Hurricane Sandy will be a major consideration when Bounty leaves for St. Petersburg later today," and "Bounty will be sailing East out to sea before heading South to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy."

The ship was headed for a public display in St. Petersburg on November 10 and 11. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention and Vistors Bureau is promoting "The HMS Bounty Returns To The Pier" on its website.
While following the ship's Facebook timeline, you can read a mixture of trepidation and attempts at soothing fears.

On Saturday, this post appeared: "Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision... NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!"

No one responded to the contact email or phone number listed on the ship's website and Facebook account.

Man, how long till someone takes down all their FB entries, they sound so sure of themselves...

I'm sure that Bounty's crew would be overwhelmed by all the prayers and best wishes that have been given.
Rest assured that the Bounty is safe and in very capable hands.
Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision...NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested.
The fact of the matter is...

A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!

In the next few posts I will try to quell some fears and help to explain some of the dynamics that are in Bounty's favor.

Yea, a sad story. This replica was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 1960. I was listening to the CBC news at lunch today and they were interviewing a guy that helped build it.

Those pilots have skill. Those swimmers have balls.

And I think all people serving on naval rescue ships and helicopters bad moving into a North Sea storm or an Atlantic Hurricane, are more than just a bit crazy. :shucks:

Latest word says the captain and two crewmembers fell overboard while abandoning ship. One sailor was rescued quickly - the other was found "unresponsive" and may not have made it. She's been taken to the hospital but she was in the ocean for 10 hrs, so it doesn't look good. :(

The captain still seems to be missing. :nope:

The air/sea rescue is a very dangerous job indeed especially so up in Alaska.

In the U.S. Coast Guard the guys that jump out from the choppers are called rescue swimmers and the training is very tough to pass and the the pilots of those choppers are just incredible to simply hover a chopper in ideal conditions is hard enough now just imagine having to contend with seas with 50 foot and higher waves a hairy job indeed.Many people like to make fun of the Coast Guard but they save alot of lives every year.

In some regions of the US Air Force Para-rescue does the same job with the same risks if you have ever read the book or seen the movie "The Perfect Storm"
the USAF lost an entire MH-60 and its crew in that storm they had nearly run out of fuel but they did not give up searching.It takes real balls to risk your own life just to save someone
when the conditions put your own life a great risk.

Sadly, the unconscious crewmember is confirmed dead.

Lot of comments on boating forums - Someone said he saw her hull recently and there were some pretty big gaps between the wood that had been filled in with oakum (sp) - In his opinion it didn't look too reassuring.

Another boater said she'd just been repaired at a yard that messed up a refit of another wooden replica ship, & he was "not surprised" by this disaster.

I suppose it will be many months before the truth comes out, instead of speculation.

There are two schools of thought on that. At Bligh's court-martial it was suggested that the mutiny happened because he was too lenient.

Also, the ship itself was just a replica. The real one was lost way back when.

....and not really a fully accurate replica. When the Brando flim was released, I was very much taken with the Gable/Laughton film version and looked forward to seeing the Brandow/Howard version. Unfortunately, I feel Brando's performance somewhat diminished the film. I had done a lot of research and among the many resources I had was a copy of the National Geograhic with a photo article on the voyage of the Bounty replica to the Pacific for the film shoot. IIRC, the Bounty had to sail through the Panama canal (someone on on of the locks called out to the ship, "Hey, Fletcher Christian, the British Navy's been looking for you for 200 years!"). The article stated that, besides the addition of a diesel engine and props, the ship was also lengthened to accomodate cameras and othe film equipment...

Winds are still up...the sea is rockin' and rolling...and they're holding it smooth and steady just "30 feet" above massive rolling swells...while guiding the basket and providing "eyes in the sky" to the swimmer so he knows what kinds of wave action are coming in.
