In all my years of playing SH4 I never figured out what the grey crew icons repersent.

Is that crew that is neither sleeping nor working? I'll have them flogged if so. :shifty:

If you have a gray icon for a crew member than you do not have a man in that station and you need to assign a crew member to it or else you don't have anybody to flog.
At the beginning of a patrol you can drag a man from the left side of the crew screen.

If you are referring to the gray bar across the crew stations than that is the standing watch.

SH4 uses the standard merchant ship three-section watch system, with no dog watches. Each crewman has a 4-hour watch followed by 8 hours off. During those 8 hours "off-watch" he is not sitting around. This is when maintenance duties get done, as well as eating, sleeping, and "personal time." In SH4, the duty section "photograph" icons are displayed in color, the other two sections are greyed out. The section on "sack duty" has little "Zzzz"s displayed in the upper right. When you sound GQ, all sections are at stations and are shown in color. If you mouse over any crewmember, a pop-up box will tell you what he is doing. And BTW, don't complain about the guys on "personal time." In a sub, this time was often spent studying for qualification or advancement. It's how you crew gets promoted at sea, which improved their efficiency and competence.

Every so often, with TMO 2.5, I've noticed a yellow "up" arrow superimposed over certain crew. What does it signify?

That crewman has been promoted since you last viewed the crew screen.
