(Reuters) - Iran's most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Thursday accused the United States and Israel of fomenting divisions among Muslims to undermine "Islamic uprisings" across the Middle East.

"By exploiting inattention ... corrupt American, NATO and Zionist agents are trying to divert the deluge-like movement of Muslim youth and bring them into confrontation with one another in the name of Islam," he said in an annual message to Iranians who have gone to Saudi Arabia for the haj pilgrimage.

"They are trying to turn the jihad against colonialism and Zionism into blind terrorism in the streets ... so that Muslims shed each other's blood."

Officials in Shi'ite Muslim Iran often describe the "Arab Spring" uprisings as an "Islamic Awakening".

Some of those uprisings have brought Islamists to power, while others, notably in Syria and Bahrain, have pitted Sunnis against Shi'ites or Alawites, members of an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Well...its true isnt it? I thought we knew that already? There have been books written on the subject of Islamic unification since decades ago which cover this fact, communism was treated much the same way.

Noboby wants a large united opposition of any kind do they? So you do what you can to keep your rivals divided/distracted and at each others throats The same kind of thing has played out in human history many times.

It's a Machiavellian way of taking care of foreign business. Like you wrote, there's nothing new in this. Nonetheless, I had never looked at recent events in the middle east from this angle; considering the cost of sending boots on the ground I have to admitt that this model is much more cost effective; why have your troops blodied in battle when you can set the enemy up against another foe?

Its like crime fighting: let them shoot it out amongst themselves! We just have to intervene when there's collateral damage; as for the thugs themeselves, well, while they're busy killing one another we can enjoy watching monday night football and fill-in supply ammo. requests at half time.

Unfortunately that strategy only works as long as their are competing factions. If and when one side or the other gives up then now you have a lean and tested opponent used to conflict to deal with.

The thing is they dont need mutch to be at each other's throats.

I should imagine there will always be competing factions in that part of the world.

I'd rather we supported that position than repeatedly having to send our sons and daughters to intervene.

I agree 100%. It's just a downside of the strategy we have to watch out for.

Tribes beat me to it. I was gonna say that we didn't need to divide Muslims in order to get them to fight each other. They've been doing a great job of it themselves for centuries.
