View Full Version : So... did they fix this game yet?

I tried it a while ago and saw what a completely broken buggy unfinished mess this game was and decided I'd maybe buy it once they'd patched over some of the crap.

Has that happened yet? Is this game safe to buy yet?:hmm2:

You'd better get some mods for it first.

You must have tried it two years ago, because it's been fixed for the most part for more than a year.

Really?! That actually gets me excited. Even without mods it's perfectly playable?

And yes I did try it last over two years ago.

How's it compare with SH4 at this point? (I won't even compare it to the godliness that was SH3 because I don't want my hopes and expectations dropped from an airplane.)

No. It's the mods that fixed it. Ubisoft abandoned it long ago. The last thing they bothered to do was remove the "Always Online" requirement. That said, with the available mods many people thoroughly enjoy it.

That all depends on what you want from it. It is vastly different from either of the earlier incarnations. To some that ruins it. To others that saves it.

These threads should give you some idea.

Remember that those are just my opinions and impressions. You should get some more soon. The problem is that we have all seen so many of these "Is it fixed yet" threads that some get tired of answering them. And yes, there have been many. Very many. :sunny:

Aw, really? So otherwise it's as broken as I remember? That's a shame.

I trust that the game's probably all right with mods, but I just don't feel right giving Ubisoft an extra $20 in return for shafting the SH series like this. :(

Shop around for it, I'm sure you'll get it cheaper than 20 bucks (depends on which dollar in the world I suppose).

There are plenty of posts that say it and Steve said it best. The game must be modded in order to play it. Stock is nothing but an obvious beta. Most online stores usually peddle this game for ~5-10 bucks, so it is cheap enough to experiment with, now. :)

Search for it on Amazon.com. Stay away from any site selling it as a download. Many reasons why, but the best one is it can be big problem if you ever have to reinstall it.

I recently bought SH 5 for $12 AT Amazon.
I felt the same way about SH 5 when I first bought it.
Now after adding the Mods i`m hooked and I don`t even want to play SH 4. Just being able to move around the sub is worth it.
You will get first rate help here from the molders and some A1 mods to choose from. If you can afford it get it from Amazon...don`t get it from Steam it will give you problems. Make sure you get the 1.2 fix from here before activating the mods.

I'm sure I'll annoy some posters on here for seeming lazy, but, could someone give me a list of a few of the problems that remain in vanilla SH5 that you need/recommend mods to correct?

I want to start modding, but I'm not exactly sure where to begin. I've picked up a copy of SH5 for cheap from Amazon and want to get hunting.:ping:

Also, does it make a difference that I bought just the regular SH5 and not the Gold Edition? Is there anything worth having in the Gold Edition?

The Gold Edition in this case is a cheat. They tried having new ships that you could unlock, and the Gold Edition contains those extra ships.

As for mods, check out the SH5 Mods Workshop forum. TheDarkWraith leads the pack, but there are lots of mods that make the game much, much better. Everybody has their favorites.

For real?! Jesus christ, they charge $40 (double the regular price) on Steam for the Gold Edition. That's some heinous ****.

And you don't have to link me the mods, I'll look up the thread you mentioned, but could you list some of the problems that remain in the vanilla SH5? I just want to make sure I know what to look out for as I'm downloading mods.

The problems in the stock game? So many it's not worth playing without mods. I can't give you any more specifics, because my computer won't run it, and because it's outside my area of interest.

Also, strongly recommend you the DVD version. (In the worst case - downloadable) - but NOT Steam.

TDW's .exe Patcher will not work on the Steam version (or any version that has some kind of changes made to it's .exe file). And TDW's .exe patcher is nearly a MUST - it fixes an enormous amounts of stock bugs.

The list of problems is ridiculously long. I won't even attempt to list them all. However, I will list some of the nastier ones.

Broken Hydrophone station
Hull crush depths too shallow to justify unrealistic skills.
Broken morale system
Broken Magnetic detonators.
Only Type VII boats available.
Stock game ends in May 43.
Navigator echolot bug locks up sound processing, preventing depth finding.
Broken TDC.
Broken Automatic Targeting.
Broken Manual Targeting.
Graphical resource hogging.
Blind Idiot AI.
Unrealistically high tonnage requirements in campaigns.
Obviously truncated crew interactions.
"Magic" crew skills and skills added to inappropriate crew members.
1-2-3 targeting. (An arcade style crutch feature that was poorly received.)

This is just for starters. I could go on, but it would simply behoove you to consider modding after installing the game.

EDIT: I forgot a benign bug that has no effect in game, but screams "no beta testing"; "Rudder 180 Degrees Starboard":/\\!!

Having migrated recently from SH3 (4 never floated my boat), a UI mods feels pretty essential. TDW UI is a great platform to build up from.
