One of my first posts on here, I use to play SH series back in the day and just got back into it about 2 months ago. I bought SH5 about 2 years ago and had to stop playing it shortly due to a lot of bugs and such. Came back 1 year later and tried some mods out, though they did help a lot, the game still felt it was too arcadish and missing a lot. I then came back 2 months ago and re-downloaded Sh3 and all the major mods like GWX and such and had a great time. I then decided to pop into SH5 and give it another shot. I downloaded MMM mod by pedrobas and added a few extra mods. And I have to say I think the game with these major mods and OH2 adding more years and missions made the game just as fun as SH3 or even more. I feel the only thing the game is missing is a story line like SH3 Commander program does, having different crew then the same old one's and a few extra U boats and ships. But Im sure that can be modded in the future. But for me the gameplay is mostly fixed. Im sure there is still some glitches that can or might never be fixed but they are small enough for me to look past. The game is only about 2-3 years old and it has come a long way while being broken or unfinished. The graphics engine and being able to walk around gives me so much imerssion I can almost feel like Im sailing out too sea, listening to the wind and the flag bouncing off the pole and making the clank sound, I live by the ocean and go out a lot in my fathers boat and the game brings a lot of memories. I just want to thank all the modders for putting in so much work and It is very hard for me to play a game so long without getting bored but you guys managed too make me stay for a long time. I can't wait too see how the game will be 1 or 2 more years from now. Keep up the great work!

Also would anyone be able to point me out to a good Radio and Gramophone for some music? It seem's the stock game doesnt come with anything special.

Good Post LittleD!
Here Here!! The game is really getting great!
As far as Music, you can use any Mp3, ogg files. I loaded up the Gramophone with all my Favorites from SH3 first. For the radio you can start with a mod here called Grossdeutscher Rundfunk. It gives you German News and music for each year and you tune the radio to the year your playing (if you want current events).

Yeah Steve I agree with a lot of what you said. For me though, I guess I can look past the historical aspect of the game. For me I can mentally still picture that I am in WW2 playing the game, I'll just block out the whole "U boat capatain comes back to port with a finished campaign and then asks what I would like to do next". Well I just pretend that that wasn't asked and the mission I recived was given as a order. No the crew can't interact and does not have much behind them but neither did the one's in SH3. Sure they have names, but I guess I can just give the crew names myself and write it down on paper. The mind is a powerful tool and if you are good at tricking yourself, you can look past a lot of the things that turn you off.

But what I can't turn off is some things in SH3. The game with all the mods is GREAT don't get me wrong, but I guess its the eye candy that mostly gets me into the game. I would take gameplay over graphics anyday but SH3 just seem's so "fake" sometimes. I understand its an outdated engine and that is what helps me look past the problems but after a while I just can't look past it. Especially when leaving a port and I look around and the port is modded great but the landscape around it just reminds me Im in some virtual world. The flat boring landscape without the tree's it feels like the port that I am in is the only city in the entire world and everything else is grassless. But when I am playing SH5, the details and tree's and far seeing enviroment and sun beams, with the clouds actually gives me that I am in a somewhat living world. Obviously in the end I still know its a game but for me I don't play just for blowing ships up I play for the realisim. I sometimes spend an hour just walking around the ship in and out looking at the waves and listening to the ocean and get lost in my world.

Im sure a lot of guys do the same and some just compress time to get to a ship, blow it up, and go back to port and DONE! but everyone has their own way of playing. I will keep playing SH5 because I know it will keep getting better. But thats just my 2 cents lol.

So you can turn off not having a full crew or a real campaign or more than seven different merchant types or one type of u-boat, but you can't turn off not having the latest greatest graphics?

I'm just the opposite, which is why I still have the 18-year-old Aces Of The Deep on my computer. It has extremely dated graphics, terrible sound, no ship types and no crew, but it still has the best AI routines ever made for a submarine game. As you say, everyone gets to play the way they want to. My problem is that I'm not a gamer. I'm a historian by nature, and I play with subjects that interest me. I like the ships, and I'm just as happy playing a tabletop miniatures game with my friends, as long as it represents real ships acting in a real manner.

When SH5 lets me run a historical campaign in the u-boat of my choice, SH3 will still be on my computer.

This is just out of date spamming if you have not tried the mods on a PC that can run the game:nope:

1. I'm not dissing the game. I'm just explaining why it will be awhile before I give anything else in its favor. I think I said many people enjoy it.

2. It's perfectly on topic, given the title of the thread.

3. Can you address any of my comments? Have any of my complaints even been looked at, much less fixed? I'm not asking that any of those things be changed now, or even soon. All good things happen in their own time. I just answered the question to the best of my ability. Can you say the same? :sunny:

Nope I can't and the reason for this is because I am mostly not interacting with the crew in SH3. I don't see most of them, I try to "Imagine" that there are more then the 10 or so visible crew members that you can see in the sub in SH3 or SH4. yes I also know in SH5 there is only about half as many members in the U boat visible then there were in real life U boats, but like I said I try not to focus on that subject because I am mostly working in and out of the sub and not paying much attenton to the crew. I also know there is a mod out that increases the numbers of the crew for more eye candy.

But when it comes to the enviroment, its impossible not to notice it. When leaving port I am usually outside on the tower. But I never said I don't get into SH3, I just said SH5 gives me a feeling of somewhat experiencing being at Kiel or out in the ocean. I just don't like the fact when looking at a island on SH3 or SH4 that I can only see part of it due to the engine of the game and view distance compared too which a real human eye can. Sh5 doesn't really have that problem. But like I said, I rather take gameplay over graphics anyday, but for me SH5 offers both of them. As I stated when I first got SH5, I could not play for more then 2 hours even with the beautiful eyecandy because the gameplay was just so off and little history was involved. I love history and that is why I only play simulator based games and not counter strike or call of duty. I play racing games like Forza or IRacing and not silly arcade games like need for speed made for the general public because It is that much closer to "somewhat expericing" it.

But now Im just rambling on, but that is my opinion and that is why I think SH5 needs much more credit then what mostp people who play Sh3 or SH4 give it. But you have your reasons and I respect them. I am just trying to get other people's opinions and to counter my argument.

All very good points, and you're right about the credit SH5 deserves. I was just answering why I still prefer the earlier versions. I was never one of the people who think it's bad, only that it's not for me - yet. I've said many times that if and when it does reach the type of interaction I'm after I almost certainly won't play anything else. It has much promise still. No hate here.

I only wish I knew how to work on implementing the things I'd like to see. I've tried time and again to learn how to make mods, but I just don't seem to be able to grasp it, which is frustrating for me because I feel that if you have legitimate complaints then you should learn to do something about them yourself.

I think SH5 is the future, and I support it wholeheartedly. My reasons for not embracing it completely are my own.

But that's just me. :sunny:

I also tried attempting to modding but I just would never have enough time. I am more of a physical hands on guy and thats why I am a mechanic. When it comes to computers and software I know the basics and maybe a little more then the average guy. But I could never do stuff such as making models or going inside the game engine files and turning around numbers and such. I went to school for physics and calc and advanced engineering classes but this stuff is just too much for me:haha:.

Then again thats why we have these amazing guys to do it for us. And the best part is they are doing it for free. Don't know how but I salute them.
