Grussgott herr Kaleuns, where can i download the original ping of a warship? I have all the mods from Stormy (Das Boot) but the ping there is not the original ping from the movie, so i hope someone of U can help me.

Danke!!

One of the problems is that the sound you hear in movies is usually the sound an active sonar unit makes when it sends the signal, not what is heard from the submarine. Former u-boatmen usually describe what they heard as "gravel bouncing off the hull", which doesn't seem to me to be a 'ping' at all. There are several different sonar sound mods out there. Most of them were made for SH3, but since both games us .wav files for the non-speech sounds any of them should work with SH5 with no problems.

Here is one a quick search turned up.

And another.

You might also try downloading some of the other big sound mods. Some of them have different sonar sounds which you can easily grab and install by hand.

Quote from another post:

In all the books I've read on the subject the men have always described the sound as..."a hammer hitting the hull" or..."the sound of pebles or gravel hitting the hull" or again... "the sound of a steel hazer or cable being dragged aginst the hull!"

I got inspired by the above descriptions for creating this sonar ping (http://www.mediafire.com/?ob0g35aa45998jq), achieved by editing and merging together several different sounds (not yet ready for use in SH5).

Some other interesting ping fx here:

a "metallic" sound with a lot of reverbe (http://www.soundsnap.com/node/85741)
another vintage sonar fx (http://www.soundsnap.com/node/37584)
the classic ping heard in many movies (http://www.freesound.org/people/NoiseCollector/sounds/6164/)

If you like any of them I could edit and save them in the correct format for being used in game. :sunny:

Hi Gap!

It's nice one..
What do I need to edit to get it ready to use in the game?

This is truly an eery, spooky sound. It is actually a pitty, as it does miss the realistic category for u-boats.

You should convert it to "16 bit, 48 kHz, mono" uncompressed wav format. But don't you guys think that it is a bit too metallic? I could try to reduce the "hammer hitting the hull" effect and enhance the "gravel hailstorm" factor instead :hmmm:

I think it gets quite close to the description of the real sound, as heard inside subs.

Thank you too, Volodya

you should put the file in the Sound folder. Let me know what do you think, and I will do the last adjustements. :salute:

Take in mind that there are two other sonar sounds used in game when you selct the hull coating as upgrade: Sonar_Coat.wav and Sonar_Coat_imp.wav. In stock game they have a shorter duration than Sonar.wav, but shortening the latter, if required, shouldn't be a big deal anyway.

Active sonar can only be heard through the hull when very close to the source. In such instances, it really does sound like gravel or even coins bouncing off the hull. It was much louder on old submarines then more modern MIP/SHT encased boats.

Hope that helps.
