Crew positions in each compartment

I've noticed that each crew position affects where a sailor mans a station in said compartment. My question is, if I don't have anyone in the slot that mans sonar (just as an example) in the conning tower, will it reduce the effectiveness of such? or is it irrelevant and only affected by the overall effectiveness of the compartment as a whole?

I never thought of it that way. The manual said it affects the overall efficiency of the compartment.

I believe it only affects the effiiciency of the compartment. I know, for instance, that you can dive the boat even if no one is manning the planes in the control room. (If you're playing RFB, this particular odd visual effect is easy to create.)

Thanks for the replies, I thought so too but didn't want to end up without an effective station lol. Makes the whole moving lookouts bellow task easier. I can leave an empty slot in the conning tower for the OOD and send the enlisted men to crew berthing.

I think it does matter, at least in some cases. I remember reading someone suggest that to keep from being interrupted by unwanted radio messages that they take their radioman out of his station. I would be careful about this.
