View Full Version : Ministers reach referendum deal

So it now looks like a referendum on Scottish independance will take place before any on the UK remaining in the EU.

I doubt Alex Salmond will get the vote he so desperately craves but if it were to happen I expect him to take with him his share of the UK debt.

Ministers from the UK and Scottish governments have reached a deal over the independence referendum.
BBC Scotland understands the final issues outstanding between the governments were resolved on Friday afternoon.
Scottish Secretary Michael Moore spoke to Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon by telephone.
Prime Minister David Cameron and First Minister Alex Salmond are to meet on Monday to sign the agreement.
The referendum is to be held in the autumn of 2014.

There are many stories and rumours currently out there but one that narks me is that Mr Salmond expects the UK to provide security/defence for the whole of the UK island.

No thanks Mr Salmond, please feel free to close the nuclear sub base as well because we'll transfer everything back to England, as well as the jobs.

The Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) are indeeed deadly serious but I can't honestly see why breaking up the union would be of benefit to either sde of the border.

Part of me wants it to happen, just so we can turn round and laugh at the delusion of it all. But I have quite a few friends from up there and I wouldn't want to put them through it, I only know of one that says he wants independence - doubt he really means it though.

Another reason would be to hopefully quell the Welsh/Cornish from wanting unworkable independence.

Now if we could just annex off Norfolk . . . :hmm2:

Oh, I disagree! Maybe there are none in the Balkans :O:, but I grew up with "Jugos". Given, some were born here, but when being at their parents, most called themselves Yugoslavs. To me, exotic places like Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia have not been been much different as when a German says he's from Bavaria or Hamburg: more describing a region than an ethnicity.
If I recall correctly, the highest percentage of people who said they are Yugos was in Bosnia, with about 20% of the population.

Given, today, only a few Balkanese-Germans call themselves Jugos, occasionally you'll still find one (mostly the older)

A funny thing, the Koreans also call this country "Finland". That was about the only thing I could understand when I heard them talking to each other and confirmed it from them. Then I learned that they don't call their country "Korea" like we do in Finnish and English, but "Hanguk".

I blame you Britons. First you went there with your silly wooden sailing ships and lied to them that we are called Finland, then you came back with your silly wooden sailing ships and lied to us that they are called Korea. The hardliners on both sides would say yes.

In reality, I, personally, think NO! Especially not with the economy in the shape it is now - we've more important things to worry about, TBH.

BBC Scotland had set of street interviews on the news last night and the main thing that comes across from them, and people I know, is we want FACTS, ALL of them, not rhetoric, before we vote.

As an aside, apparently, the Welsh First Minister isn't a happy bunny. He doesn't support the idea of an independent Scotland. He believes it would cause an imbalance in Westminster that would cause problems for Wales. The assembly in Northern Ireland is also watching closely, although, ironically, Sinn Fein are trying distance themselves saying don't get involved!

I've always believed that all parts of the UK should have devolution. That means a new ENGLISH parliament, completely separate from Westminster, for purely ENGLISH affairs. Leave Westminster as a purely federal body, akin to how Australia and Canada are set up? It also cures the problem of Scottish MPs being able to vote on affairs in England & Wales, whilst their English and Welsh counterparts are unable to do so for matters in Scotland.

I don't think the Union will break but what I am seriously worried about is 16-17 year olds getting the vote as this for me is what could swing it in his favour. All he would have to do is have Braveheart on the TV for the entire day before the election and he would have the vast majority of the teen on his side.

but I agree that we want to see the facts. I have biased bull**** from the SNP and I have biased bull**** from Westminister and you simply can't trust any of the figures.

As we see similar happening in Spain, where Catalonia also wants to opt out, I wonder how much it also has to do with the current state of the EU. The tensions with London/Madrid have certainly always been there, but I ask myself how much animosities against Brussels also play a role.

The crazy talk continues....the SNP have voted to join the nuclear-based military Alliance NATO but have also vowed to bar nuclear weapons from its territory, should it gain independence.

Time to rebuild Hadrians Wall ten times higher than it was initially and ignore any pleas for help when the north is invaded :)

The leader of the SNP has said that if his party won power in an independent government it would make nuclear weapons illegal.
Alex Salmond told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that Trident, which currently resides at Faslane Naval base on the Clyde, would have to go.
