Trees have been cut down, power lines have been moved and traffic signals removed to allow the shuttle to pass through the streets.Los Angeles residents have been turning out to watch the US space shuttle Endeavour as it inches through the city on a giant trolley, bound for a museum.

The spacecraft that once reached 17,000mph (28,160km/h) is trundling down the city's famously low-level boulevards at a stately 2mph.

"It's pretty neat to see a spaceship in the street," a spectator told local TV.

Endeavour began its 12-mile, two-day journey on Friday and is due to end up at the California Science Center.

The 75-ton spacecraft entered service in 1992, making 25 trips, logging 123m miles and circling the globe almost 4,700 times.

Replacing Challenger, which was destroyed in an accident in 1986 that killed seven astronauts, Endeavour was the baby of the shuttle fleet.

Nasa took its shuttles out of service last year in order to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, such as asteroids and Mars.

Certainly a pleasure to see the ferry in the dense settlement, :o

Sigh

It is the orbiter, not the shuttle.

When will the media attempt even the most shallow research?

It is just as easy to learn something correctly as it is to learn it incorrectly.

But in the vernacular, it is the shuttle. I feel either is appropriate, but only one is technically correct.

And I don't care If my arm fell off, no cold would keep me away.

Toyota publicity stunt, fair or foul?

as someone who only remembers the shuttles; it's sad to see the ending of an era

Here here Gimpy. I've seen the whole fleet except for Endeavour. She was still in post mission processing when I was down at Kennedy at the end of July (And I recommend everyone visit KSC, it's a brilliant day out)

Glad to see Endeavour is finally reaching her new home. If anyone can get down to Florida during November when they plan to move Atlantis from the VAB to its new home at the KSC vistors complex I recommend you do so. And take a couple of day to check out the space coast. Lots of interesting info and experiences to be had.
