I Thought it was just a world of warplanes wannabe?

Wannabe? WANNABE!?

Look up the trailer for it!

Play Birds of Steel!

If the people who made IL2 Strurmovik feel that Gaijin is a good enough game developer to carry on the IL 2 franchise, they must be a very good brand!

They even make 3 different game modes for their flight sims:

ARCADE: The sort of thing hardcore flight sim fans sneer at.

REALISTIC: The sort of thing hardcore flight sim fans look disdainfully at.

SIMULATOR: It's easy... if you have an actual flying license!

This looks amazing, I have been playing games by Gaijin, in particular the Il-2 series for years, hence, look forwards to it greatly. Its amazing they will have ships, I really hope that one day they add Submarines as well as using a Jyunsen B sub with those graphics and in such a massive game would be like a dream coming true. @ Cybermat, I thought the same thing, but as I found out more about the game, the Western, and Eastern European Fronts are featured in addition to the Pacific Theatre of the war, so a Bf-109 makes sense.

I was inpatient and bought the 'Typhoon Pack'. This is really an awesome game, flight controls feel really sweet, the cockpits look fantastic. The sunlight on the propellors blinding your sight from certain angles that kind of realistic stuff.

Ground targets blow up in your face when you get too low and the whole battlefield immersion is there, moving vehicles and AAA vehicles pounding the sh^& out of you, this will be a nice game to play during this winter.

Arcade mode is a little different, all kinds of aircraft battling it out, sometimes same type of aircraft will engage eachother but it's real fun, you never know what kind of scenario you find yourself in. I even did some kind of Pearl Harbour attack scenario with me in the Typhoon.

Only slight downside is that everything costs money, or huge amounts of xp points.

But it doesn't look like those pics above:O:

Gaijin did not make IL-2 Sturmovik. In about 2008, they received a license from 1C/Maddox Games to develop the Birds of Prey/Wings of Prey, the console-friendly flight game adaptations using some of the IL-2 technology and name. They've done a good job of that, making a fast, good-looking, scalable engine. I would not regard WoP as a true flight sim, being substantially stripped down in that regard even from IL-2, but it's very servicable for something that's accessible and large-scale. It's a total non-surprise that it works for MMO games in general.

But Gaijin have nothing to do with IL-2 itself and although Gaijin are also located in Russia, afaik no Gaijin employees ever worked on the IL-2 series proper. It is no more (and arguably less) connected to IL-2 than Rise of Flight or Theater of War (both of which share some of the technology and staff with original IL-2 development).

I tried War Thunder, as a fan of IL-2 1946, Cliffs of Dover and hard-core flight sims like DCS A-10C and Black Shark, I can't honestly say I was that impressed.

I know that it is still being worked on but I feel that they are being a bit over-eager about saying that the "simulation" mode will be even mildly accurate.

Don't get me wrong, it is a fun game, I just think the sheer scope of the title will not allow anything close to the accuracy that many of the fans seem to think will be present.

Plus, I don't like the idea of a f2p flight sim with stats and a unlock system, it makes it feel like a xbox game to me.

Oh, I've played simulation mode on Birds of Steel multiplayer on Xbox 360.
Here's a transcript of the voice communication:
CYBERMAT47: Oh my God, I just killed an AI!
OTHER PLAYERS: Holy $&@€, dude, you must have developed this game! We're only 43 minutes in and you've already got a kill! And you've only gone into a spin and blacked out 53 times!

Difficulty (or good gameplay as the case may be) doesn't necessarily mean realism :O: Besides, 43 minutes isn't much compared to the learning curve of weeks that a lot of complex sims have, and that's just for learning systems.

That said, I can't imagine an MMO that's full-blown in terms of complexity, so this is probably a great engine and a great approach for creating a reasonably popular, populated game with lots of people to play against.

OK, so I was exaggerating.
But still, Gaijin have proved themselves to be quite good at finding that balance between playability and realism, especially for Xbox and PS players!

Yep, they're a good team. I never really got into WoP very much, but I love how well-optimized their engine is. Looks great, runs far smoother than anything in the original IL-2 series ever did. Pretty stable online too. So I've got no doubts that this will run smooth and look good, gotta see what they do with the gameplay for the ships I guess.

After playing for 3 days i can say, this game is solid. Ok it's not a simulator but as far as game immersion, good fights and plenty of opponents goes this game has it all.

I had some lag yesterday on 2 occasions, but overall the game runs smooth and the flying is fun and entertaining, and i love that because i've flown sims for a very very long time and never tried anything like this. As said the arcade mode is fun, it's like a flying circus:O:, an arena of just about any aircraft, really nice!

Beta version has no ship control available yet, but i guess this will be possible once the game goes in the next phase of development, the open Beta..

You should get Birds of Steel.
It's pretty much an offline version (but has an online multiplayer option), and it has a bucketload of campaigns. About 9, 11 with the Battle of Britain expansion.

War Thunder is designed to be a "World of..." killer. Right now it's only aircraft, but they'll be adding playable warships and ground units in due time. So a single match will have players flying air support, charging the enemy lines in tanks, and providing long range fire support with naval artillery.

Hmm... I like that idea! It'll require ingame chat, though, so you can be like:

CMDR YURI: Tigers sighted, co-ordinates 154 746!

CPT DIMITRI: Laying down artillery barrage!

AWESOME

I seriously doubt that Warthunder will be harmful in the least to the world of series. Sure it may have all three theatres in one game, but having all three balanced and having the level of variety that the world of has. Not to mention that Wargaming has managed to do F2P pretty well in my opinion.

You know, i play both World of Tanks and WarThunder, i also joined World of Warplanes Beta..

World of tanks to me is like playing the most awesome game there is since i'm a Tanker next to a Subsimmer and i'm proud of it:woot:

I've been playing my ass of all weekend since WoT won the Golden Joystick Award and i recieved some great goodies.

Warthuinder is a great game when i feel like flying, and its a really great game with alot of potential, the new maps released last week add new maps with PT boats, and they are realy pounding at you, they move in quick and suddenly you are attacked by 5 or more, you can just feel that one day they will be player controllable:rock:

World of Warplanes is a laugh, no cockpit view and lousy handling.. but i will keep my eye on it :salute:

They'll be adding in the Navy too. Looks like they're going toe to toe with wargammer. Downloading the game as we speak and I'll give it a pass in the morning. I really like how flying looks so far and the choice between Arcade and Simulation. One of my biggest complaints about World of Warplanes is the 3rd person view and no bombers.

I'm going to probably stick to American Heavy Bombers, Torpedo bombers, and probably the PBY just for fun. :arrgh!:

I've been playing it for a few months now and tbh I think it's far superior to World of Warplanes. If they can get the land and sea parts right then I reckon they're onto a winner. Although it would take something fairly special to beat WoT.

So far I'm loving WT. I think the big appeal is going to combine planes tanks and ships. Something that wargammer said was impossible.

They are making exceptional progress with this game. This is how historic games are made, huge companies clashing against each other trying to capture most of the market.

Subsim will love it when they add playable naval ships. There are tech trees for American, Germany, and Japan...probably more.
