Getting out of hand in NYC? Or are they in the right to do so? No easy choice for a policemen, but reason seems to be thrown out the window lately.

A tragedy of course, the question is if it could be avoided.

I love me a good NYPD police smashing....

But I cannot.

When you are compliant, they generally do not shoot you.

Even if you think the reason you got pulled over for is "bullcrap", or "they be messin with you cuz you a minority", whatever.

He says show your hands, show your damn hands, and say yes sir.

You put them at ease, and they generally treat you better.

Not saying they were not trigger happy, but had he put his hands out the window, and complied with the LEO, this would not have happened.

I want to know what he had to hide.

This is not the Empire state building shooting, where they sprayed into a crowd, this was a man reaching for something after he was told to show hands.

Having drawn a weapon before but never having discharged it I would say......you need to be there to know what the situation was and assess how you would react in a similar situation.

I really don't get it what up with these guys :-?

Whenever I'm pulled over or stopped by the police I just comply it'll be over sooner for me and their day is made a bit easier.

"He actually joined the Army because he wanted to be a cop," Love that bit, so what was going through his head when he was reaching for that power drill? Does he think the Police likes to be pranked and/or as a police it's all about having fun and laugh when those silly civilians got you real good?

The loss of any life is a tragedy.

After reading this, I need some levity.

Ah, the title of this thread will do nicely.

"NYPD abolishes guns, starts using unarmed men as primary weapon"

Fixed the thread title for you.

As for the topic, I am half in agreement with Soopaman2. Yes you should definitely be smart when dealing with the police. But it also sounds to me like the cop screwed up as generally speaking you can only use deadly force if you can actually see a weapon (in some jurisdictions you need the weapon, and the person also needs to be raising it into a position to fire at someone). As for this specific case the cop seriously screwed up if what was reported is true (even if he was reaching for a drill as the officer claimed, he was not presently in mortal danger with the car door closed). If it was road rage and things happened like the bartender said, then the officer should get charged with murder 2. I am also very skeptical that the off duty officer in the back seat was asleep the entire time.

Guess we'll have to wait until all the facts come out. The front passenger said he never reached for anything, that both hands were on the wheel.

I've watched many youtube videos and thought the cop acted too fast, even some cases murder, only to watch other youtubes and say the cop took too many chances and got shot for trying to be nice and professional.

The story doesn't quite make sense either regarding the off duty cop riding with the victim. They claim the cop was in a rage, shooting the finger, but the off duty says she slept throught it. I find it hard to believe she didn't wake up or the other two didn't wake her up. If I had a cop with me, I would've woke em up to deal with the mad cop and get me out of the ticket.

I do think too many times they ignore cops with rage issues.

I am first to step in and call foul with things like this.
I cannot in this case, I believe the officer reacted on instinct.

NYC is not like most places, they have alot of (for lack of a better word) jerk off criminals. I would rather assume the worse and live, than get shot being a nice guy to someone driving like a moron and cutting people off.

As one of the resident liberals, MSNBC is a (expletive) stirring craphole, look at how they word the article. Then include the empire state building shootings, like it somehow applies to a case of a non compliant. All Officers are bad, because a few had bad gun discipline?

I am glad they included plenty of witnesses against, but not a single statement from the department. The mother talked, claimed he wanted to be a cop, boo hoo sympathy, stick your god damn hands out the window next time, Oh I forgot...

If he wanted to be a cop, then he would not have been so defiant, when pulled over. He would have understood the procedures.

I bet he wanted to be hard in front of his friend.

It was also dark at the time, so a drill could look like a weapon. Calm down...NYC is not the devil, some of you sound like the jihadists with the witchhunts.

It's not a witch hunt in my case. The question is if the officer acted properly or not, and there is a lot that makes me suspicious with this case, particularly with the off-duty officer that supposedly was asleep the entire time (aside from the passengers almost certainly trying to wake this person up, do you know of a cop that could sleep through a police siren? I don't). The story also makes little sense, why would he reach for a drill of all things?
