I was shallow. cruising at 1/3 power at 160 feet, minding my own business, when all hell broke loose, my bluegill literally began to spontaneously combust.
My question is, just what the hell happened. I was in deep water, my final sounding showed over 1000 feet below the keel. I run TMO 2.5

You were too deep for plane to be able to spot you. I bet you hit a mine. :help:
Another possibility is you plotted your course with the map zoomed out, then hit an unseen island. :/\\!!
Or you may have taken some heavy hull damage and the pressure finally was able to breach your hull. :lost:

You make a good point. I completely forgot about mines, especially in the area I was in. Convoy college, north of Luzon. Until that point I had no damage and I plotted my course to specifically avoid islands.

I haven't played TMO 2.5 yet(last time I played SH4, TMO 2.5 wasn't out yet. I've been playing an earlier version) and I don't know if this is still the case or not but it is possible a aircraft got you. Ducimus, in his evil ways when designing TMO :03:, adjusted the settings for airplanes that enabled them to spot you somewhat deeper than periscope depth.
I've seen posts from people complaining about this and countless arguments on whether a plane can spot you at depth or not.
160 feet might be deep enough and you probably did hit a mine but keep the aircraft factor in mind when sailing around submerged.

Personally I think it was a mine. It was just the way, everything forward the conning tower was wiped out and my engines were damaged horribly.

As I recall later versions of TMO adjust the planes so they don't blast you when deep. That's not saying if a plane spots you, others won't come hunt and drop on your position. Many times you can attack ships and be dived trying to escape and planes with come join the hunt for you. Some planes do carry bombs and charges, bombs explode on the surface, the charges will go much deeper. You didn't say that you had been spotted, so I doubt it was a plane.
That being said, I opened up the minefield layer in TMO and there aren't any mines exactly in Convoy College area, cept if you draw a line ESE from the bottom tip of Formosa 105 miles you'll run into a small field that extends up covering the east side of Formosa. This does place some mines in the NE area of Convoys College entry point, so that could be it. However, this field doesn't spawn until 9/43, so if before that date, look to something else.
