WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
First, which version of the game are you playing? Stock, out of the box?. One of the supermods? Different versions of the game have different convoy routes.
Second, when are you in the war? In 1939 you'll find enemies just cruising up and down the east coast of Britain. Another good place to look is at the choke point off the south-western coast, between England and Ireland.
Inside the Silent Hunter III folder is another folder called Documentation. In there you'll find a picture called SHIII Map. It shows all the main convoy routes. You should find something there.

Another pro-tip I learned from the people here, about every 1-4 hours you should hit 'P' (Dive to periscope Depth) to see if you can hear/detect any ships, as even early on in the war you can hear the ships from as far as 20KM away while underwater.
You can see about 8 KM (Provided the weather is on your side),

Welcome to the fleet!:arrgh!:
If you havn't, go download GWX3. It's amazing.
Second, unlike certain other games of the first person genera that has a fishy name to it, enemies do not come to you intentionally. You need to actually hunt them down.:ping:
And be stealthy. I personally like hunting the area between the Irish Sea and the British Channel.

Actually, you can hear upto 33km if you turn the volume up. The hydrophone crew only reports what is within 20km. Either way, it's still a needle in a haystack though.
Be More Aggressive!:arrgh!:
Draw a diagonal line through BF13 - BF15, south west England, its a meeting point for convoy routes. Sail up and down with regular dives for hydrophone listening.
