View Full Version : The Model Railroading thread
The F series really are iconic, probably the most recognizable of the diesels of that era I'd wager. :yep:

... unfortunately Oberon, he painted them in Pennsylvania colors (The Standard Railroad of the US of A), and not Big Four (part of the New York Central System)... :har: -
Sorry, I'm a former Penn Central / Conrail / CSXE employee, and I used to get a kick out of the old Pennsylvania dudes and the Big Four dudes arguing as which railroad was the best... I used to always say "~WAS~"... :arrgh!: - later in my career, I got to rub elbows with former B&O and Chessie fellers who all had the same trouble...
Good stuff fellers on your modeling. :yeah: I know how much patience it takes to do that, but it can also be rewardingly therapeutic doing it... :salute:
Every second year there's an American themed model railroad convention organized in Rodgau Germany.
This years exhibitors came from Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Croatia, Finland, Luxembourg and Slovenia.
Captions are in finnish, but the pics speak for them selves.

My Aunt Gretel lives in Rodgau.
BTW this was my summer project. My military rail head had too many dirty nasty Legs and needed some Paratroopers.
The Chopper is a Rocco UH-1D (HO Scale). I gut the doors out and remounted them in the open position. The figures are Preiser US Infantry frankensteined into the proper poses.

Really appreciate the effort you put into your work. I tried to get something going like this for a hobby but found myself constantly changing my mind of what to do. Found myself trying railroad simulators instead. Just curious if you ever gave them a try? The latest one I had a great time with is the Train Simulator 2016 - Clear Creek Narrow Gauge route.

Thanks. Yes I have tried Train Simulator and it was interesting but I like creating the scenery as much as I like running the trains. I've also ripped everything out and started over on various sections of the layout. That's part of the fun as well.

I already know the answer, but do you find that you spend more time on your model railroading hobby in the winter than you do in the summer?
I've enjoyed many Christmas times with Lionel size layouts around the tree and even taking up the whole living room, but like the Christmas tree itself everything has to be put away sooner or later.
What do you call the O scale Lionel size train sets when they only have two rails?

I think they're just simply called "O Scale." Actually, I think O Scale is larger than Lionel.
:hmmm: :06:

Well my layout is in my garage attic so it gets too hot in the dead of summer and costs an arm and a leg to heat in the winter so I find that most of my MRR time is in the spring and fall.

I hear ya about having to break down the layout. That's why I picked the garage attic. Not even the cat goes up there. I can start projects and leave them laid out until I am ready to continue which can be weeks.

AWESOME!! :yeah:
As a former model railroader myself, I know how much work went into your railroad, and believe me it shows. Congratulations on a job well done.:Kaleun_Applaud: And I also know that no model railroad is ever truly completed.:salute:
Been up to the train room recently after a long hiatus. The layout now has a working farm!

...way to 'necro' :o errrr glad yer back on track after nearly half a decade! :yeah: How many operational locomotives are in that 'train room' fleet? There are six alone in the round-house pic.

All of the ones in that picture are operational. About 2/3rds of the roundhouse bays contain a working locomotive.
Here's some more in the line up.

Nice August :up:l'll just settle for a dryer Febuary! :O:The Napa Wine train tracks, incl. a vital trestle bridge over the Napa River are currently washed out...https://s20426.pcdn.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/NVWineTrainExterior-436-e1504126139335.jpg ...and the Napa Expo Train Society recently got evicted from its Quonset hut after 52 years of dedicated hobbyists' multi-generational work due to profit motivated fairground's management decision-making :wah: Now I'll have to build my own after 30 years of enjoying this place...but think some astute nephew glommed all my childhood train stuff from mom's basement years ago... https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/napavalleyregister.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/d/7d/d7d8d97f-9509-5d02-a2a3-d87d0c5b66a9/60a821726b5ef.image.jpg?resize=750%2C500https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/napavalleyregister.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/6/48/648646fc-2d76-50be-ad75-91f8f4d25e4c/54729c067911f.image.jpg https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSEH1btaeTkmN0MMp46lHPA2aUUPAvA_ O8owGKrS8COeA5CnFeW0BFkxkKLRvZgJB5mNfg&usqp=CAU https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQTwS5dZ-45CLOi884Zm5IabIhMElCir5N76AFNEVioc7VcJtx8i0HxtQbe AarJ9tQlwcE&usqp=CAU
Too bad that looked like a nice layout. Did the society find another place or did they have to destroy it?

That's good to hear. It takes so much to create these layout's it's nice when they can be preserved. Some people make them modular which is something I wish I had done. The NMRA has a standard for modules that allows for that and to mix an match them.

That's a cool setup!
Not very realistic i'm afraid. Steam engines and diesel fuel do not mix.
Got the motorbike placed on the layout.

Nice, is that a Honda? Do you run the wires under the base to power the lights?
One thing about model railroaders, they don't just model a tank with a few shells and scrub lying around, they model the whole blinking town. Very very cool, love the chickens too!

I believe that is a post war BMW. It's from a set of two produced by a company called Rocco.
For the lights I used micro LED's and ran the wires along the frame and down underneath the layout. I put the wires on the back side to hide them but I found they are so thin that once painted in you can't even tell they are there.
This is what railroad people call a "U-Boat" Otherwise known as a General Electric U25B.

Beautiful layout! Really like the Fall colors and the 1970's (or 1960's?) cars - very classy.:D

The layout is based in the 1970's. Back then there were still plenty of 1960's cars still on the roads and some 1950's vintage as well.
The WW2 and Korean war vets at the Legion Hall still keep theirs in tip top shape.
