View Full Version : to buy or not to buy silent hunter 3
Hey guys
I have SH4 for a while now and i love it! I got curious about silent hunter 3 and would like to check it out. But im wondering if its worth it? How different is it from SH4? I know it are german u-boats but does it make a different gameplay experience from the us subs? Also do you have all the abilities in sh4 to configure your sub, like giving crew promotions, 'buy' new equipment for your sub? Last but not least, the realism factor, how is it?
And before i forget, are there nice mods for it?
I know i could just google most of my questions but i prefer hearing personal experiences :)
Cheers! :salute:

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
The bad: SH3's graphics are not up to the same standard. If that doesn't bother you, continue reading. SH3 doesn't have the automated crew rotation or the cool 'General Quarters' features of SH4. As for u-boats, you can actually play them in SH4 too, if you have the U-Boats add-on (patch 1.5) and Lurker's marvelous Operation Monsun mod. Also SH4 U-Boats is the only version to have both latitude and longitude coordinates and Kriegsmarine grid squares.
The good: SH3 has several amazing supermods available, as well as hundreds of other small mods. SH4 has nothing to compare with the overall experience of SH3. With the right mods you can traverse the Kiel Canal, stopping to wait for the gates on the canal locks to open and close. A huge amount of merchants (more than 100 different types) await your pleasure. With SH3 Commander every ship you sink generates a real name, crew number and cargo type in your patrol report (as well as a host of other cool functions).
To put it simply, SH3 is the most primitive of the three current incarnations. It is also far and away the most developed of them all, benefitting from seven years of constant mod attentinon. It has the most rounded campaign.
For an example of what SH3 has to offer, check out this thread:

It's dirt cheap, get it, mod it, love it, and spread the good Subsim word. :yeah:
SH3+SH3C+GWX3.0= A mind blowing game.

Yes. Play vanilla SH3 first to get a feel for the game.
Then add on a supermod like NYGM or GWX3 and really enhance your experience.

Does SUBSIM still get a cut of the money if SH3 is purchased through the Amazon link?

Euhm thats a link to books that contain 'Belgium' in the title? You may find what you want in the link, so it submits itself, many orders in the European Union, :)

Careful, the use of the word Belgium is banned on many planets.
Is it possible to buy from amazon if you live in Belgium? I see all prices are in dollars and no way to change countryI think it gets converted to Euros at the time it is payed with creditcard or Paypal. Or at the last review page of your order you can see how much the dollar or pound cost is worth in euro. But I understand that shipping cost might make a significant difference. Neal does have a page for Amazon.de (Germany) but it doesn't seem to be up to the same standard as the UK (.co.uk) or US (.com) page.

I think most sellers in the UK, and Germany would post to Belgium, and I'd expect quite a lot from the .com site to also, but be wary of postage costs if from America. :yeah:

I played SH4 extensively upon launch; but I just came back to SH3/ SHCommander and Greywolves 3.0 just the other night.
Nothing really beats SH3 in terms of polish, and immersive play.
Edit: haha you really can see when I last played the game, from my sig.
