Have just returned to SH4 after trying 5 for a couple of months, and reinstalled but now cannot switch off unlimited fuel, from main menu I choose options, then game play and tick the limited fuel, but back to career or start new career and I have unlimited fuel, anyone any ideas please
In the office, before the patrol, there is a radio on the shelf to the left. Click that to set options for the career.

Damaged batteries can do that. Sometimes they can't be charged to full 100%, but the game will still keep trying to achieve that and burn lots of fuel in the process. If that occurs you'll just have to manually switch off charging at about about 98-99%.

Thanks for reply but no damage at all, batteries charge to 100%, could weather be a factor or prevailing winds.

Weather is a factor, but a minor one. With no damage, check your speed. A lot of people, before I became involved, tested the sub ranges and found out the best speed is around 10 knots. TMO adds two very useful features. "Distance to end of plotted course" and "fuel range at current speed."

Hello,
It is possible that you have been attacked by aircraft and it is also possible that the damage to the hull are not reproduced.
You may be a hole through which the escaping fuel.
Try to go back at the economic speed and especially avoid plunge.
Good luck.
