View Full Version : Faster Than Light
So, how's everybody doing? :)
Just only reached sector 5 on Sunday and got the Engi ship, which wasn't really
worth the effort if you ask me. It's nice on easy, but on normal I usually get my
arse handed to me in the first sector. :nope:
Not that I'm doing that well with the Kestrel either, think I've managed to get
half-way through sector 2 on normal. Just not enough scrap to upgrade it enough. :-?

Finished it once on easy in the Kestrel and once on normal in the Osprey (Federation cruiser). Unlocked the 2nd layout for Osprey as well.
It all comes down to luck really. If the first system I jump into is an asteroid field or close to a star (with the flares) it usually ends there. And getting to the end depends largely on the weapons you collect along the way.
When I finished on normal, I had the mk2 pulse laser, mk2 ion blaster, fire bomb and fire beam (only 1 fire weapon powered at a time though). Oh, and the artillery beam in addition. I could wreak havoc on their shields and weapons quite easily, and with the fire weapons I managed to kill off their entire crew regularly, greatly boosting scrap income by capturing rather than destroying ships.
The combination I had on easy was pretty good too; twin pulse laser mk2 and a missile. Target their bridge with the missile to disable their evasion and then just focus-fire the lasers.
* unlocked the Zoltan cruiser as well. Fancy shields but the weapons are rather useless.
Yeah, it's very much a luck-based game... something I usually don't have. :shifty:
Been playing a fair bit, definitely a pretty awesome little game.
Haven't beat it of course, only seen the big a-hole face to face twice so far.
Unlocked a couple ships so far besides the Engi. The Zoltan Cruiser and the Stealth Cruiser. As well as unlocking the Engi ship's variant.
As much as I like the game I really hope they add more campaign modes though, as much as its fun as it is it gets a bit repetitive going for the same thing over and over. I for one think a Silent Hunter inspired mode would be fun as hell in this game.

Getting the long range sensors(60 scrap in one of the Merchant stores). Greatly improves your odds of making it. For one it tells you if there are any enemy ships near the beacons you're about to jump to(perfect if you're low on health). Two it tells you if there is a sun or asteroid field too, which means you can avoid these.

Have the four enemy mantis bugs teleporting inside your ship and preforming mass slaughter on your crew is no fun.:o
^ Put all the crew that fits, to the med-bay, the rest to some other room and vent the atmosphere.

I haven't had much trouble yet on Normal haven't tried easy yet. I was defeated by the end boss on the third attempt on my first try through the game. That said I found that once you unlock the torus your pretty much unstoppable. Ion their weapons, let your drone pick away at them till they die you take no damage. If you are lucky and manage to pick up a second anti ship drone and a second Ion cannon then you are pretty much unbeatable.

Improve the doors as well. Lvl 3 doors can hold them off long enough to almost kill them before they progress. Even with lvl 2 doors you can hurt them enough by venting atmosphere to take them on with equal numbers quite easily.
An extra level of shielding, engine upgrades to get out of dodge + improved evasion and upgraded doors are my priority on a new game.

And just pray that the invaders dont take out your CO2, cuz if they do your dead usually.
Got amazingly lucky last night with the Kestrel A. First, I found a small bomb
from the first sector and then the.. err.. other self-teleporting thingamaling
that does 3 damage to systems and causes hull breach but doesn't actually damage
the hull. Also, I had the pre-weapon primer thingy that allows you to shoot
as soon as you jump out of FTL. It was glorious. :yeah:
Also found one of them self-teleporting Ion bombs.
Then.. I got to sector 7 and got killed. HATE THIS ****ING GAME! :stare:

Vent it. They won't assault components in a room without air.
It's a pain if they teleport in there directly though. I always get a upgrade for that asap as well; even if you don't power something fully, the empty boxes take damage first. An extra box on the shields lets you take a point of damage there without compromising shields, etc.
Oh, won another on normal with the Engi cruiser. Twin ion blast and hull beam and mk2 defence drone + stock assault drone.

""Before I go to bed every night, I do the same thing:
I wash my teeth, wash my face and I watch 3 and a half hours of porn.
And I sleep like an Angel."
You are a very thorough ferret Dowly here all these years I have been brushing my teeth when I should have been washing them.:har:

Bit too close for comfort... Not the first time the artillery beam saves my behind.
Still haven't gotten anywhere apart from getting the Stealth ship last night,
which is very fun ship to play. :yep:

Teehee, that last "boss" has isolated weapon compartments.
1. get teleporter
2. beam crew in one of them
3. profit
Takes a bit for a boarding party to destroy the weapon, but apart from the one crew member manning the station there's nothing to stop you.

Not going to get this any time soon, Dwarf Fortress+Tekkit and Hearts of Iron 3 are time-sinks enough for me, I don't dare add another one:-?:O:.

:hmmm: Perfectly possible. The game is wide open, if a little code biased (I hate xml), but all resources are accessible as is the event coding.
Just unpacked the resource.dat and data.dat file to check, it's all there and the ability to create and alter compartments is easy enough.

Bumb because the thread exists. How is everyone doing with this after a few months?
I got this a few days ago too and so far it feels pretty awesome. I've been playing only on normal because I feel like being a masochist. It sure depends a lot on luck (First jump => Nebula => Boarding party => You die), but I'm slowly improving my survival strategy.
I have concentrated on shields lately, purchased the teleporter early and by luck received some Rock and Mantis crew members from events. Boarding feels pretty powerful, seeing all the cool stuff you can get. And with a decent crew, most races can't put up a fight even against two man team.
But the /(&%& missiles get me all the time. :stare:
Say what you like, I think it's a little overpowered that even the basic variant missiles (which every single fool in the universe has) can simply ignore my well upgraded shields and the AI can pummel away with its infinite supplies until it has destroyed all my systems. Will have to invest in evasion in the future. Drones seem to be very expensive and again very much based on luck.
So far I've only gotten to around sector 5. Then I simply can't keep up anymore. I can't find enough good weapons to pierce the AI shields anymore and the boarders aren't fast enough to prevent damage. Which is then carried on to the next battle. And next. And next. And then boom. It seems every single ship in the universe wants to kill me. Missiles help with the shields, but again: battle after battle, less and less to spend.
Marvelous little game nonetheless. I haven't even so far really tried to finish it but rather unlock different ships. With poor results, but still.
