Hi, I'm kinda new, was here back in 06-09 but my life went nuts... I had to re-sign under new name. I'm Just getting back into gaming & SH3 is the 1st game I want to play again.
I'm having the same black screen after intro movie, then all I get is a mouse pointer & music, same as others... but I can't find the K-Lite Codec Pack or any codec!
I had XP b4 & all worked well with sh3, however I could not get game to install w/vista so I gave up a while ago. I then heard that the SH2 & SH3 combo packs have no starforce BS & works in all windows OS. So I got a copy & was happy to see that it installed into my gaming folder (not that X86 BS). It has file ver. 1.4.0.1 which I found out that means it's 1.4B???
I tried all res from 800x600 on up & no dice. I'm not sure what to do next but I've gone too far to turn away now! I want to try & continue my saved games from B4 or start over if I must. Please help!! (add "puss in boots" face here)
Thanks

BTW, under the compatibility tab, I set the game to run in XP SP2 mode & to run as admin. Under security tab in permissions for administrators, I set it to full control.
Also, how do we upload pics for our Avatars? Thanks again in advance.

Welcome aboard - again!:salute:
To have a custom avatar you have to make s small donation to Subsim.
Check the FAQ section for more info.
Otherwise Subsim has its own avatar and rank system based on the number of your posts. Again more info in the FAQ section.

GDI personally don't have a clue besides what you allready did. But knowing your Graphics chip/card and driver version might help others.

Good idea - It's a Laptop: Dell XPS m1530 w/a Nvidia geforce 8600m gt. Driver ver. 8.17.12.8562/date 10/15/2011.
All other system req. are met or exceeded. Thanks
could you have loaded a corrupted 'save?':hmmm:
if so, reload to a previous one.

Thanks, but I'm still in the phase 1 stage of trying to get the game to work.
Soon I hope to try & get my old saved games on a carefully guarded thumb drive to load.
Wish me luck... I got a feeling I'm gonna need it.
You can do this, good luck

I run SH3 in a quad-core Acer laptop pretty similar to your laptop, Win 7 64-bit. The only major difference seems to be the amount of memory in the video card. My Acer has 512 MB, your Dell seems to have 256 MB. I remember trying SH3 in my previous laptop that had 128 MB of memory for the video card. The game ran but so slowly that it was not playable. I think your system might a bit slow on the graphical side to run SH3 properly.
The technical specs in Mobygames say that 512 MB is required:

We are talking about SH 3 unmodified, don't we?
Well, it even ran on my laptop with NVIDIA 9300 with 128 MB of graphic RAM.
Please try to install a codec pack (http://codecguide.com/) and DirectX Version 9.29 (http://www.chip.de/downloads/DirectX_13002926.html)
Then let's see what happens...
The intro video is really working?

My old XP system was slower in every way then my laptop, so I don't think that's the problem, at least not w/vanilia SH3... but I'll keep this in mind. Thanks

GD,
please report back whether it works or not. There are other reasons left why it won't start. We'll figure out...

I got one more B-day party to have this week... we got 3 in 3 weeks time in our home + the baseball playoffs (GO Yankees!) + work, sleep etc. I'm still going to do this sometime soon, by the last week in Oct for sure, so don't think I've given up just yet.
I hope all is well with all & may your team, in whatever sport... be beaten by mine :O:
