need help using the search pattern

what is the logic behind the search pattern button? It seems to alternate direction depending on my location in a grid but try as I may, I cant predict the placement of the first pattern.

as far as i have noticed it depends on your heading. if you are heading north east all of them will draw as they appear on screen. if your heading is south they will invert that image and west will mirror that image. this always seems to work for me anyway

It is dependent on your direction of travel. If you are heading SE, it will draw the pattern to the SE of you. If you are heading NW, it will draw the pattern to the NW of you.

thanks guys. the one thing I couldn't seem to figure out is what direction is the first turn. sometimes it's port, and others it's starboard. I'll have to make closer note of my heading.
