This book is on my 'must have' list!
Written by Marvin W. Barrish and available through Amazon (So Neal can get a cut).
At $156.00 it's the most money I'll have dropped for a single book but the info is stunning!
There's also a thing on National Geographic channel comeing soon.
:yeah:
Looks interesting but the cost means I might wait for some used copies to start showing on Amazon.:hmmm:

The blueprints of the Cyclops alone make it worth buying for me.
Not to mention photos of the later years before it was lost.
There were several modifications done that photos on the net don't show.
I'm hopeing to have the cash monday to put my order in.
:yep:
That may depend on the truck I'm going to look at tomorrow.
:hmmm:
Edit.....
OK. So I bought the truck.
:nope:
I'm still getting the book after seeing the check I got.
:yeah:

Should be a good read Jeff, I know you've always had an interest in the Cyclops since before we put her in GWX.
Tell Nancy we met up and ran up that bar bill together.
You still got the vid of the night we had in that Houston bar?
Best not post it or Grant might get a little upset :har:
I'll post a picture instead....wonder what he was saying to me at the time it was taken :smug:

Got the book today. Well it was at home yesterday but I was in Wisconson then.
I got home today and both the book and my new NoteBook were here.
I opened the book first!
This thing is a MONSTER!! Just pageing through it was an eye opening event!
The pictures and plans alone sent shivers down my spine.
The few pages I did read tell me I got exactly what I paid for.
Not the BS Triangle stuff that the Cyclops is forever linked to.
But a story of a real ship as best as can be told today from records.

Makes perfect sense to me. I'm a funny one. I'll always take a good history or tech & spec book over a novel. I consider Campbell's Jutland, an Analysis of the Fighting to be light reading for a quiet evening. This one sounds like money well spent.

That was a Bar hopping, sub clean up dodgeing day I'll never top!
:yeah:
One photo in the Book that is really cool?
Cyclops coaling the Texas!
:o
Haveing visited the Texas twice now, that picture was a surprise treat!
The down side of the Book.
I HAVE to re-do the AC-4 in GWX.
A proper Cyclops is needed.

Spent a few days going through this book.
(Finally!)
If your one wanting nitty-gritty details? This is THE book for you!
I'd say it's the source for nearly any tidbit of information regarding the Cyclops from the day it was planned through it's disappearance.
The amount of information is staggering and shows the amount of research time involved!
:o
Not for the faint of heart, this Book will answer nearly any question you could ever have about the Cyclops.
Combined with the disappearance of her sister ships 71 years ago?
The crazy Triangle theories are just that.
This is a book of facts.
Well worth the price!!

I have Q-Ships versus the U-Boats (Beyer). Is in this book U.S.S. Cyclops something new compared to the mentioned book?
Madox58

Your book probably refers to the British merchant, Cyclops.
http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/1243.html
My book is about the U.S. Naval Collier, U.S.S. Cyclops.

Yep. That's the ship i'm reading about.
Here's something I found out on the 'Net.
This year the Boxing Hall of Fame inducted a fighter known as 'Cocoa Kid'.
His connection to the Cyclops?
His father was aboard when she went missing.
:nope:
Hmmm..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Lewis_Hardwick a.k.a. "Cocoa Kid"

Here's what I mean!
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/100_0671.jpg
I blacked out the text cause I don't want issues about that!
What's left is the footnotes to references!
HOLY CRAP!!
A whole 'nother source of information that can be followed up!
And this is only page 6 and 7!
:o
In other words, much information remains :yep:
Madox58

The first section deals with how this Class of Colliers came about includeing all the proposals, contracts, bidding, Congress, blah blah blah.
Being in Commercial Construction/Destruction?
I'm use to Contracts and such.
So this section interests me and reminds me why we never bid Government projects!
:haha:
I guess the competition is fierce in the market, and that there is a false game under the table with black money,:hmmm:

St. Nazaire, which us SH players are aware of, had a visitor in 1917.
Listed as one of the escort vessels for Group III was the Cyclops.
There's a plaque there.
Can't wait to read about that Convoy!!

Aye and your PM called it spot on http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/whistle.gif
It seems to be a thick book, how many pages are there,:o
Madox58
11-28-12, 02:16 PM
Around 703 pages.
:yep:
Checking sources and doing simple follow ups I found this from Wiki.
During World War I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I), the city became an important unloading port of the allied troops, and particularly in the latter stages for the United States Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army). When they entered the war in 1917, they developed the town and port infrastructure, by adding additional drinking water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_water) storage ponds for the town's water treatment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_treatment) plants, and a refrigeration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigeration) terminal to the docks for shipment and storage of meat and dairy products to supply their troops.
However, the presence of legal brothels (Maisons Tolérée) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_France) resulted in a diplomatic incident. As a result of strict reformist public health concerns at home, the American Expeditionary Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Expeditionary_Force) placed the Maisons Tolérée off limits, resulting in a dispute between the towns brothel owners backed by the mayor, versus the US Army forces. With the dispute escalating, President Georges Clemenceau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Clemenceau) sent a memo to Gen. John Pershing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pershing) offering a compromise: American medical authorities would control designated brothels operated solely for American soldiers. Pershing passed the proposal to Raymond Fosdick (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Raymond_Fosdick&action=edit&redlink=1), who on giving it to Secretary of War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secretary_of_War) Newton D. Baker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_D._Baker) promptly responded: "For God’s sake, Raymond, don’t show this to the president or he’ll stop the war." Only after the signing of the Armistice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistice_with_Germany) in November 1918, when the US Army could no longer plead military necessity as grounds for curtailing leave, did venereal disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venereal_disease) rates among US Army troops shoot up.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Nazaire#cite_note-HCNSPlse-1)
:har:
Now that's something I never heard about!
 many pages are there, but an interesting story, and I guess there are many different angles in the book that makes it extra attention,I love this kind of adventures in reading and IRL, :)

I recall that early versions of GW were pretty strick as far as Easter Eggs.
When SH 4 came out with it's Ghost Ship?
We found it to be a pretty Cool idea.
:yep:
The first thing that popped into my mind was a recent Ghost Ship.
Cyclops I'd heard of from past fascinations with the Burmuda Triangle.
It fit the gameing area and close to the time frame.
It also still fit 2 actual sister ships that were sailing dureing WWII.
That was where my real deep interest started with her.
Not as a Ghost or legend.
But the real ship, the real story.
Just that, the true story. What are your thoughts about the Bermuda Triangle?, is there any substance in all the "mysterious" disappearance, or are they scientific, that there are natural things that have happened at times when flights or boats have disappeared.
Madox58
11-28-12, 03:02 PM
I have been through, in, or near the triangle many times in the past.
I've never experienced any of the stuff others reported.
I also find the number of Ships and Planes lost there not disproportionate to any other high traffic travel lanes over the Oceans.
Hell, the English channel probably eats things faster!
But it's a so well accepted fact of life that it makes a bad story.
:haha:
"We" may allow us to understand that there are secrets, when I sailed overseas so I experienced strange things, and it was just like the situation, whatever it may be,:yep:

I don't believe in Fairies, UFO's, and all that mystical kinds of stuff.
I do believe in things that happen but we have no real proof of.
Mass gas releases sinking ships and unknown weather weirdness in rural areas.
I still recall, with vivid memories, walking down a hall on the second floor of a building to take the lift down to the first floor.
Only to find myself on the first floor with no recollection of haveing decended in anyway!
:o
Did I teleport? Or is it simply a case of short term memory failure?
(Been trying to teleport into a bank vault every since!!)
:har:
Beam me up,short term memory failure. We have all that, even if we forget :D
