I think they got it after 2.
Don't remember getting it ingame though.

Strange! I have them both (U-Boot Front clasp and U-Bootbadge) and the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

More strange than that its my case...im in the 15 war patrol, October 1941 and i won all:
30NOV39 IRON CROSS, SECOND CLASS
19JAN40 IRON CROSS, FIRST CLASS
07JUN40 KNIGHT'S CROSS
11SEP40 KNIGHT'S CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES
28JAN41 KNIGHT'S CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES AND SWORDS
15MAY41 KNIGHT'S CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES, SWORDS, AND DIAMOND
And untill now is missing the U-Boot Front clasp and U-Bootbadge witch is historical give in the first war patrol. :06:

Historically you should allready have it from the beginning. I doubt youd rise to captain of a U-boat without being on a patrol before.
Unless it's a wartime badge, then I could be wrong

Same point of view here...

IRON CROSS 2ND CLASS
Usually awarded after 1st patrol. Sometimes even without any sinkings.
U BOAT BADGE
Awarded after two patrols.
IRON CROSS 1ST CLASS
Awarded for 50 000 tons of shipping sunk.
GERMAN CROSS
It ranked between knight's cross iron cross I. I use 75 000 of shipping sunk.
KNIGHT'S CROSS
100 000 tons of shipping sunk. Knight's cross variants for continued sinkings gnerally 50 000 tons interwals.
Also many mid/late war captains had medals up to iron cross I class won as watch officers.
Also late war captains could won knight's cross for conducting a single convoy attack with good results or even sink a single ship.
None of these are modelled very well with SH3 or any super mods.
What complicates things even more, is that as war progressed the Knight's cross changed requirements. After 1943 and specially by the end of 1944, in view of the difficulties of even staying alive Dönitz awarded several to commanders who had just sunk one ship or even damaged some.

With little tinkering personel file looks quite realistic. IMO NYGM awards medals best. All I had to do so far is remove u-boat front clasp and add uboat badge.

I finally got the U Boat Badge in one of my un-doctored careers, but it was quite late in the war. It's not the good ol' plain one, either. It's the one with the diamond where the swastika would ordinarily be, and which was, I believe, usually saved for the elite folks, like Mr. Donitz.
I got it with one of my careers where the realism was fairly low, like 64%, but made it into late 1944 before it was awarded. This was before I started "fiddling" with config files, and before Herr von Braun joined the crew in that one rather startling career I wrote of in a different thread.
So it looks like the boat's commander is above the paltry "regular" U Boat Badge; presumably he's already earned one some time before getting his own command.....

This is a bit off topic here, but how have you been able to switch to a type IX after 3 patrols? I've been hunting around here for ages for a mod or a guide allowing me to switch to a type VII, but no luck... If I'll have to gain the renown to be able do the switch with a type II, I'll be able to do it around 1960s. Any help would be appreciated, and again I'm sorry for the OT. Also, vai etta on taalla muitakin Suomalaisia. :)

I think the issue might be that the space in your medal case is not for the same ordinary U-Boat War Badge as the one the crews get, but the 'diamond' version (http://uboat.net/men/decorations/badgebri.htm) (only 12 of which were ever awarded). This might explain why we have to wait for ages for it rather than getting it on our 1/2nd patrol like the rest of the men. In reality as has been said you'd almost certainly already have it, maybe the game takes it as read.
