Thursday I noticed that I was once again having problems with unwanted ads in texts all over my online stuff, especially Subsim. I used a removal program to get rid of it. Unfortunately when I used the deep cleaner that comes with it, it somehow tried to delete the whole registry. It now won't load up. I took it to an expert, but he said I would have to reinstall windows, and that would take the disc. I went to my storage but couldn't find it, so now I'm at the library buying a copy of XP, used, for $30. I also notice the same ad links on the library's computer, so trying to get rid of it may have been a waste in the first place.
Now I'm offline for several more days, except maybe one hour per day, and I can't even use my computer locally. No work, no play, no TV, nothing. Since I don't have any kind of a social life it looks like I'll be doing a lot of reading, and a lot of guitar playing, and a lot of bicycling. That's the only good news: After months of fretting over trying to fix my ailing free hub I found out that a new one only costs $12.50 online. Another six bucks for a special tool and I should have it installed for about 15 minutes of work. :D

I agree with Jim. Hang in there and we'll miss you.
Sorry to hear about what happened Steve. Hope you get it sorted soon!
Take care Steve, for what it's worth I made a similar screw up once a long time ago when I deleted Win.exe and then wondered why Windows wouldn't boot up. :dead:
Look forward to seeing you back soon. :salute:

I'll still visit from the library at least once per day. My bigger disappointment is that I can't work on my projects or watch my favorite shows! :wah:
I'd say my life sucks...but it's not that good. :dead:

Maybe this is meant to be steve, its a sign from the heavens. So you gotta make trips down to the library, that Liberian with the thick glasses buried in a book might not be the shy nerd from the 70's anymore she might be waiting for someone like YOU to come along and chat her up, the cupids are on your side believe in them! And before you know it your be doing more than band practice each night...:O:
on a serious note hope you get your pc & internet going soon.

It is a sign!
Like one day during Hurricane Irene, my hot water went out (Yay basement flood) , so I stopped bathing, Brrr, lets see you shower in cold water in Jersey!
I have not bathed since then.
I get the entire bed to myself, no pesky wife stealing the covers, People at work avoid me, which is good, I hate them anyways.
Oh Steves internet...:03: I digress.:D
But I never did make much sense anyways, so you can at least laugh at me.
Anyways not bathing, and peeing in the sink can reduce your water bill by 47%, but decreases your sex life by 100%
Just saying, it's a trade off.:D
I know the pain of being without, and it can be liberating!:smug:

Take a day off from subsim (blasphemy!), charge your batteries for your camera and head out on foot or bike for the day, head to the hills, follow the river, go to the lake, go to the airport - no need to rush. Then next day visit the library and give us the virtual tour of SLC. :yeah:

@ Kiwi: Unfortunately I've had some recent events in my personal life that have left me not very interested in the local librarian, or anyone else for that matter. On the other hand it got me a couple of pretty good new songs. I would post them on YouTube, but I don't have the energy to create videos, so I have to figure out something else. After I have a working computer again. :sunny:
@ Soopaman: It was worth the trip just to read that. :rotfl2:
Fortunately this library is right across the street from my place.
@ H-B: Interesting you should say that. The new free hub really did only take fifteen minutes, and we went for a ride yesterday. My knees and lungs...I mean, the bike isn't ready for a long trip. Two miles is pushing the limit right now.

Have you considered suing Dooly for the bad initial advice :hmm2:
Just a thought :03:

Hey Steve, I somehow misunderstood your post when I read it the first time, I thought that the repair guy would only have the harddisk. In this case you could have used a live image CD to access the internet (I like Knoppix for this) - as much as I would hate to keep you away from much more healthy activities :03:

For uploading the song only, there are many possibilities - remember the address from the song I wrote back in 1579? - you can upload there for free and listeners don't need to register.
If you really want to create a vid, I could help you - though I think moving pictures destract too much from the music, always hated it when people say: "The music sucks, but the video was good" :88) - that's the reason I try to link to YT vids with still images if possible.

Well.....
The Good News: My new copy of XP Pro came in the mail Thursday. I got in installed with almost no problem. I had to make a trip to the local thrift store to buy a real keyboard (only $3) because right when you need to start configuring stuff the power to the USB keyboard cuts out.
The Bad News: The new installation cancelled all my drivers. I'm having a fight with Comcast right now because they say it's Microsoft's problem. I'm trying to convince them that all I need is the driver for the modem so my computer will talk to it. Meanwhile I can't listen to any music because the driver for my sound card is gone as well. I think I've downloaded the proper stuff here at the library. We'll find out when I get home.
MORE GOOD NEWS! The money and the help finally came together at the same time yesterday, and after fourteen months of waiting and six hours of hard work all my books and stuff are out of storage and in my apartment! Now all I have to do is get it unpacked and sorted. I already have most of my ship and aviation books on the shelves, but there is still a long way to go.

Good to hear, Steve. Books are like good friends and advisors. I don't know what I would do without my books, so I sympathize with your situation. Hope things continue to improve for you...

Well, it's happened again. Suddenly my computer isn't recognizing the sound card, says the video card is not installed properly and won't allow it to boot up except in safe mode. I've tried everything I can think of and everything other people I know can think of. I can't afford to have someone else look at it so it's looking like I'll be posting from the library again for at least the rest of the month.
No music, no video, no online except for one hour per day. At least I can still work on my own projects. And read. And unpack boxes. And ride my bike. Several things to enjoy and be grateful for. :sunny:

And of course my foot's in my mouth, but at least I'm happy again.
This morning I decided I had nothing left to lose and ripped the whole thing apart. I saved everything I didn't want to lose to my external drive, unplugged it and the flash drives and completely removed Windows from the computer. I did a reinstall from scratch, and, six hours later, it seems to be working again. I'm still having a couple of minor problems, but I hope to have those resolved soon.
Fingers crossed, holding my breath, and we'll see how long it lasts this time.
