Took a trip down to Duxford and it being my first visit I must say it was an amazing experience and well worth the 500 mile round trip.

The Tiffie is a lovely bird, fast, loud and sure can move!

Love the Victor, nice to see the whole thing, the RAF Museum at Hendon only has the cockpit.
I've been there twice visiting the airshows in the late 90s. Loved every minute of it. Nothing better than to see, but above all HEAR Spits, Hurricanes, Messerschmidts and Mustangs in a mock dogfight. I miss it.

Wait, now I'm really confused. What part of the Buna aeroplane collection is this? Wow, you've got a big flat.
So when are you going to see Evergreen aviation museum? ...and I throw in the Boeing museum. (I'll buy plus the Newcastle:hmmm:)

Ha Ha, and he only just got through the door. Keep 'em coming Jim
Biggest collection in the country jim, did you checkout the Land War Section?
I was last there some 10 years ago in the freezing winter and a MIG15 caught my eye about to take off, worth freezing my balls off to watch the MIG15 take off. :DL

Bloody hell marvellous pics :yeah::yep:
Cool pics mate. Keep 'em coming.
I keep meaning to go to Duxford when I'm down that way but I haven't managed it yet. You should try RAF Hendon when you get the chance. Finest museum I've ever been to, with the possible exception of the original IWM. Spent almost all morning in the WW1 hanger alone.

I second this, and then you can blag your way into the college next door for a cuppa. :03:

TSR-2, the great 'what might have been'. Lovely shots Jim, did you try to touch any of them and get a static shock? I did from some of the aircraft at Hendon, I couldn't resist...particularly not with the Spitfire and Hurricane...so much history, it's...well, Picard puts it best in First Contact:
"Oh, yes! For humans, touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way, make it seem more real."
Jimbuna
09-08-12, 02:30 PM
Fortunately I don't usually suffer from exposure to static shocks Jamie so despite being able to touch a few I honestly can't say I did.
There are a little over 300 piccies in total so if people feel they've seen enough simply call out and I'll save them for the aviation forum I frequent.
More than happy to pay that....also helps the museum

You lil bugger Jim, how did you manage to sweet talk the IWM chaps to let you stand next to the Sabre? Beautiful pictures mate :salute:
Wait a mo...
*rummages through picture collection*
That's the same Sabre that flew at the Bentwaters airshow back in 2010! Awesome stuff, beautiful aircraft! First Sabre back at Bentwaters since the 1960s, was wonderful to see.
And Memphis Belle too, probably the most famous B-17 in existence!
The Rapier system is interesting, I always thought the optical seeker was on the main body of the weapon rather than to one side. Although I guess in the era of HARM weaponry it makes sense to put any emitters away from the missiles. :yep:

The American Hangar was a bit tricky to photograph in because of the practically non existent interior lighting and the fact the whole hangar entrance was clear glass coupled with extremely sunny conditions outside.
I initially started photographing in 'forced flash' mode but the results weren't all that good so eventually settled for 'automatic' mode.

I miss the days of Coningsby, Finningley, Scampton all having their own. Also my local airport used to have an airshow that was more than half-decent - only 5 miles away now but no show. I used to travel down to Mildenhall, Alconbury and Lakenheath shows too. :wah:

We have a saying up north that goes something like 'shy bairns get nowt' and my friend Chris (Concorde) the northern barbarian from the north side of the Tyne is anything but shy...he loves to touch and fondle aircraft exhibits, cross barrier ropes and whatever else it takes to get a closer look.
His favourite aircraft is the SR-71 Blackbird and whilst I readily admit we both had a few touches of her tail etc. Chris decided he'd have a look up the old lady's knicker leg because he knew exactly what he'd find LOL

The museum has US iron? F4, Hellcat, B29, A10, DC3, B25. Nice collection! The F4, what a workhorse.
Too many to mention Chris but amongst my favourites were the F-15, B-52 and Phantom off the USS America.

I do not know much of this aircraft. It did participate in Desert Storm I believe. Thinking why I like certain aircraft, as a kid I remember seeing some on the news (F4's) or my older brothers having models of P-40's and Spits. The 60's and 70's the WW2 aircraft were quite popular toys for kids.

On our way home we called in at RAF Wittering to see the gate guardian, a Harrier GR.9 ZD469....this was a sad experience for me because she is the only aircraft at the base which only goes to highlight the sad demise of our armed forces in recent times.

Ah, the MK.5 Spit. Aesthetically, I think the Spitfire was at it's most beautiful in the MK.5. Although, having said that, the MK IX isn't far off either.

That's what I initially thought but if you look carefully they have glass windows which you are meant to look through.
The inside was fully viewable with the naked eye but the camera flash simply bounced of the glass making the pictures unviewable.
Nice pics jim, looks like no change in the land war section but still a good layout. As I recall on my visit some years ago there were a load of Tanks outside under repair in a fenced off area.

Yep, still there but hardly worth taking shots of.
It's been 21 years since i was there, the place looks unrecognisable..
Great pictures, is that the prototype Eurofighter?
I saw it on it's first public display in 1995 at the RIAT in Fairford, when the engines were not finished yet and it flew around with the same engines as the Tornado..
Great place, it was the first time i saw a V2 rocket:o

Well it was 21 years ago, lot's of time to move things around, maybe they swapped it with another museum for something interesting they had, common practise i guess.

Fair enough...never seen one but would love too, they certainly had other rockets such as Scud, Patriot etc.
Never saw the V1 or V2 on my visit to Duxford in the 1990's. RAF Hendon has both, the V2 is all green. Imperial war museum has a V2 & the Aerospace Museum Cosford also has both of them, their V2 is the Black & White version.

Not many model shops left on the high street, just about everything is online....the same for so many other themes aswell, sadly :-?
Yeah I remember the big Beaties on Holborn High street, even in the early nineties their model section was getting smaller and smaller, until one day the whole store was gone :(
