Well i finally am playing SH5 after some doubts and fears and hearing alot of negative things, the game is crap, runs bad and so on.

But i like my own opinion the most, so after reinstalling this game after 7 months when i discovered the game lived up to it's name i am ready for some more and since there are mods out there that make this game worth playing and it's my holiday why not ?

First let me introduce myself a bit, most of you dont know me but i have been playing sub sims since 1986 and i thought i was the only one with this 'deficiency' untill some time ago when i was at a clan meeting and i discovered SH3, one of our members was also into subs and i bought the game and we got heavily involved playing almost every day for months, i was still playing Red storm Rising at the time.. I was back at my favourite game of cat and mouse and loved it, then came the announcement of SH4 and i was sold, never again would i play something else. Well it turned out to be a dissapointment at first but the mods saved the game and i spent alot of time in this game, then i lost interest after so many patrols..

Then SH5, well things started good, went bad and the patient has recovered a bit and i think it's time to give it a whirl, don't know what i'm getting in to and what mods i will use but here it goes, a fresh install and patch 1.2, for now i will leave the game as it is first i want to familiarise myself with all the changes and then i will mod, if i ctd alot i will start modding right away but for now after the tutorial that has not happened and i'm still new to this game so here it goes!

The installing:

Went smooth and without problems, for some reason i had to create a new uplay account while i also played anno 2070 for a bit a few months ago, strange.

The patching:

No problems there, i'm used to downloading patches as everybody else is nowadays.

The options:

Well i adjusted the anti aliasing a bit, restarted the game and all looks well, i'm ready to play!

The tutorial:

What a difference! A nice movie and a real story, i don't care about the plot or the story this so much better then some pictures and animations. And i can actually walk around! This is the thing i allways wanted the most and i know i will just love talking to my crew, its really cool and makes the whole experience so much more fun, no more staring into the eyes of someone that you know will never look back, they talk! Wow..

Then the graphics, i like them so much better then the other older ones the boat is really beautifull and the enviroment looks pretty and i can't wait to make it better, the mods are allready downloaded and unpacked:haha:

The kills were easy targets, the torpedoes were swimming and there they were, my first kills..nothing difficult about it just point and shoot.

Navigation, i really like the minimap system alot and soon i was back at Kiel after sailing straight through a friendly strike force making it's way to Poland, impressive..

I got the green tick and i'm ready for some mods, for now i will just be testing a bit and maybe do my first patrol and get to familiarise myself with all the changes Ubi made..most important thing, i'm having fun again.

There is still alot of love for SH4 and i will keep playing as long as i have electric power but this could make me change my mind a bit, SH4 was a real drag at first but i learned to love it.

I will be posting regulary to share my experience and i will be reading alot of posts in the coming days, as stated i'm back and active and loving it!

Also i would like to inform you about the website link below, if you like submarines then i would like to invite you to take a look and learn about Dutch submarines, they were and still are the pride of our Navy and we have been building them for more then a hundred years. The picture in my sig is the O-21, she sank quite a few ships during the Second World War, she earned alot of blood flags and many books have been written about her..

Welcome from across the the pond here in the USA.

You are not alone in your thoughts of SH5. It's brken out of the box like all of the SH series. Given time with mods installed you'll either love it or hate it more. ;) Like you I wouldn't buy it for a long time. Finally after seeing the mod work that was done I broke down and bought it.... even paid the full price and let it sit some more. Now I actually love it more than SH3. And I've played Sh3 from the day it came out until I burnt myself out playing it. Sh5 is the one I'm now addicted to, if I can get past the British Supply mission without reinstalling to get a few mods working as they should. ;)

Hang in there... SH5 gets better every day. :salute:

Today i started modding, started with the JSGME and copying all files into the Mod folder. Got some greyed out ones and after rebuilding i now have 5 mods running and testing is underway.

This is my modlist:

Reworked Morale and Abilities
Dynamic Environment
FX Update
IRAI
New UI and TDC

Chose a Historic Mission, Gibraltar..and i'm now on my way to doom or La Spezia, whichever comes first.

Made it through Gibraltar last night, no way that was possible in real life but i was lucky, enemy escorts and destroyers turning away at the right time and i was in visible range for some time but they didn't detect me, ah well the vanilla game has its problems, try that in SH3 GWX and you just know it was impossible..

Started modding yesterday and found out today they were not functioning:oops: turned out i had my root all messed up, fixed the problem and i'm just on fire to discover all the new goodies and improvements:rock:

Tonight i'm gonna play till i fall asleep at my desk, one thing about SH games and this forum especially, makes me come back for more all the time even after being absent for a year i allways come back:ping:

Well, after a week or so the dvd is back in the box and the game unistalled, again....

Although there are some great mods out there i just miss the idea that things are fixed.

On my first patrol i sank 6 ships, returned to port only to ctd after 4 hours of play.

Another attempt left me with no UI, just white rectangles where the buttons were supposed to be.

So i'm gonna play SH4 TMO again and made a mark in my agenda to check this game again in 6 months..

Thanks all for the great tips and help with installing the mods!

You'll probably have the same problems again. Sounds like your hardware (computer) is not up to snuff. It appears you don't have enough video ram (graphics card) and/or enough system ram :yep:

So the hardware is actually my computer itself? Never noticed that:O:

Specs:

E6600
Nividia GTS 250 1 gb
4 gb 800mhz DDR2 mem
7 Home Premium

Well it's an old pc but it's still above minimum specs for this game, on the other hand mods could stretch that demand above my specs, i recognize that..

Maybe when i buy a new one i will give this game a chance again.
