View Full Version : Favorite Sub?
Being new to Silent Hunter III I have yet to find my favorite sub, I've used the VIIC, IXB, and only a couple of their varients. I find that I prefer the VIIC more due to my speedy kill style but perhaps there is something better? :hmmm:

It all comes down to each ones playing style.
I prefer the IX types (B and C)since I like long range patrols in distant waters where the type VIIs cannot reach.

Is in the beginning of the war the VIIB, than saving reown for the IXB..
VIIB Pro:
- 210 deckgun rounds
- Quick dive
- 8 knots under water full speed
VIIB Cons:
- when depth charges, VIIB can damaged quicker than the IXB
IXB Pro:
- More torps
- IXB can handle more depth charges, wiln't damaged quicker than the VIIB - type
- Fast on surface in topspeed...
IXB cons:
- Slow in diving, takes longer than the VIIB
- Less deckgun shells than VIIB :wah:
I never tried to buy the C class of the VII and the IXC...
When i have the IXB class i saving money for the DX2, if im correct i little larger sub, same amount of torps as the IXB class...
makes sense, my last captain died :wah: so its 1940 feb and i'm in my VIIB, i see what you mean with the range, although I still go pretty far in it, although my deck gun never has ammo running GWX, any ideas?
edit: and how in the world do you turn off auto engage? sneaking into scapa is hard enough

Than ya deckgun will load...
Best range in 1939 is around 1500
Range in 1940/41 2500, some ships have deckgun/AA's front and rear, take them out first before you do the rest
No i mean i start with no ammo, although it says I have some aboard yet no shells in reserve, am I over looking anything?

Good morning, People...
I personaly like the VIIC type...because in my opinion its the best possible between VIIB and the IX type. But this can be diferent for another players depend from operational necessities too and attack mode...:salute:

If you are running GWX, hit "I" on the keyboard and up should come your torp loadout screen. In the upper right cornor is a symbol, looks like shells. Click that and the screen will show you the deck and AA ammo available. I believe for my Type VIIC, I have 188 rounds.
To stop the auto firing of the deck gun, as soon as I finish, click on the officer in the tower(watchman) and click on the deck gun icon and click on the raised hand(cease) icon.

Nothing beats the IXC in my opinion.
A very good compromise between performance, amount of torpedos and effective range.
The VIIC is far better to look at but the IXC is the boat to be in the battle in my opinion, especially later in the war where convoy battles are suicidal if you approach anywhere closer than 2-3000m.

Make sure three crew are stationed on the deck casing. Choose the "deck gun" view. Right click on the little graphic that shows ammo amount. A text will pop saying "loading". When "loading" disappears, you'll be ready to fire.
BTW, I love the sound of the spent shell casing hitting the deck. That's a nice little touch added by GWX.

For my style of play - I have to go type VII. I stay mainly in the North Sea or around the Western Approaches so range isn't so much of a concern. I also like "the canoes" but torpedo capacity leaves much to be desired.
I am positively itching to run a "Drumbeat" patrol in a type IX, though...
I grew up in Virginia right on the coast.

Ahhh that sounds like loads of fun, do you just sail across the atlantic and resupply at bases in the Caribbean?

I am planning to run Biscay-Greenland-US east coast, and back again.

Afraid not. Germany had no bases in the Caribbean. What you need is a Type XI U-boat. By carefully conserving fuel you can make the crossing from the ports on the Biscay coast. Also there are refuelling ships and subs at various locations. These can be found by hitting f1 and clicking on resupply info.
It's a long trip, pack a lunch.:D

I could just feed the crew currywurst and sauerkraut the whole way and we could manufacture our own fuel.
Belchen supply ship (Greenland) is a definite and any U tankers I may run across. It'll be awhile yet.

well we all know by far is is the XXI but its expensive and it takes some time to get it :shifty:
For me i would say the best ubaot is the IXC as it has a good stock of 20 torpedo's, fantastic range, speed, AA armament and operational depth. yea it does have a slow diving time and fewer deck gun ammo but lets be fair here, if they could WW2 submarines would stay under constantly like to modern ones today but they couldn't so if you were ever caught by planes reloading externals you know you have a better chance of surviving
although i have never actually owned one i loved my IXB and the c varient is better in almost every way

It is better suited for harbor raiding due to it's small size and quick diving. It does have limited torpedo loadout though, and no deckgun iirc. But you'll learn to appreciate the limits impossed on you and way to work around/with them.
