Wow. Inevitable, but always kind of shocking when you lose an icon of American and world history such as Armstrong. May he rest in peace.

Indeed Tak, no-one lives forever, but it's still a helluva shock when they do pass away.
RIP good sir, I'm afraid I missed seeing the landing live, but the legacy lives on.

Very sad to hear. He did this interview in Australia a few months ago and seemed fine considering his age.

Really sad to hear the news.
I was only 4 years old when it happened- But I remember my dad told me about it and how my parents, their neighbors and the rest of the little town, was gathered to watch the moon landing in the local assembly homes

It happens that I didn't even know he was still alive myself. http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/172673uglytock.gif
Rest in peace and all that stuff.

It was black and white, and a poor quality video but it's something I'll always remember.

I know Apollo 11 was a group-even national effort, but Neil was always one of my heroes, along with Ned Beach. Rest in Peace, Neil, and thanks. They don't make them like you anymore.
RIP Neil
I was a wee laddie of 10 when I watched the event live on our B/w Telly..
Cheers
Gary
When I read about his dead Many memories came up
Some of those was from youtube video and especially this one
Why I remember this one, by the hundred I have seen about those moon-landing conspiracy video, is Buzz giving this guy a smack in the face(I'm a non violent person, but this guy was asking for it)

Great man. RIP Neil
He made the one small step. Took the whole humanity to get there, but he did make the one small step. For that, I think he certainly deserves to be remembered forever :salute:
And of course, let's not forget all his other contributions to the space program.

Please just don't start with conspiracy theories. Show some respect even if you think that landing was just a dream.

Thank you captain obvious. :D. But I want to point out, that foot print has become synonymous with mankind's venture into space and exploration of the moon. Which when I see it will always cause me to remember Neil Armstrong (and others) were a part of.

A pioneer and a hero.
And a very interesting guy. He once said that the three most exciting things he had ever done were flying a jet fighter, riding a good motorcycle and riding a good rollercoaster. He didn't include walking on the moon. Of course this was on a TV show he hosted about rollercoasters, and he apparently owned stock in a company that built them.
Still, he was the first of a very small handful to have set foot on another world.
Sorry. Please move it or delet it. My mistake. :/\\!!

I was born in 64 ,I was not quite 5 when he landed on the moon but I can still remember the day clearly - I think it was that ,that influenced me to a life long interest in space and sci-fi.

That's what amazes me most - no matter what happens in the rest of human history...no matter how many planets we visit, colonize, no matter how far away, he will always be the first to have stood on the surface of a land that wasn't on Earth.
:salute: To one of the bravest men I've ever seen, rest in peace. Your journey inspired generations to come, to believe in what mankind can do.

This.
Not to belittle that first step on the moon, and what it meant for humanity, I think that Armstrong didn't do anything special there. He did what anyone would have done in that place; he simply had the luck to be the one that was chosen.
I've always looked at his handling of Gemini VIII to be the true mark of his skill and ability to keep cool under pressure.
Off to join Gagarin, Grissom, the crews of the Challenger and Columbia-godspeed sir.:salute:

I read today that he thought walking on the moon was actually the mundane part of the whole mission. Like you said, anybody could have done what he did on the moon. He looked at the time on the surface of the moon as something anti-climatctic, "something we looked on as reasonably safe and predictable."
What Armstrong thought was the toughest part of the mission was flying the lunar module. He said that guiding the craft gave him a "feeling of elation."
I also found it interesting why he was picked to go first on the moon instead of Aldrin. It seems Aldrin was overtly opinionated and ambitious, making it clear to NASA why he thought he should be first. Armstrong was quieter and thought the dedescent and landing would be the huge achievement of the mission. (This is according to a 2001 auto-biography of Christopher C. Kraft, Jr., a top NASA official).
Also found it interesting that Armstrong was the only one of the three Apollo 11 crewmen that didn't publish a memoir.
A true hero in every respect. :salute:

The 'official' story at the time was that Aldrin was military and Armstrong was a civilian. The version you relate was told very well in the TV movie about Apollo 11, and a slightly shorter version in From The Earth To The Moon.

Mr. Armstrong. I am sitting here wondering how many cardboard boxes I sat in as a child... drawing gauges and dials inside... to make my own space capsule. Thank you (and all of your colleagues) for all the imaginations and dreams you gave us as children to walk in your footsteps. Thank you for the example you set for us all. Godspeed Neil.
