Welcome back f16falcon. :salute:
The answer to your question is, it depends on who you ask. I doubt very much if you could get every member of this forum to agree about that. :D

The basic platform for SH4 is an improved SH3, so in that regard 4 is better. If you get the 'Gold' version you can play u-boats as well as American fleet boats. There are several great campaigns for the American side, and one for the Germans. SH4 has several gameplay and graphics improvements which set it ahead of SH3.
Where SH4 falls down is not the game's fault, but the lack of modding. As I said, there are some great campaigns, but many of the smaller 'atmosphere' mods have not been done for SH4. There is nothing like SH3 Commander, which gives names to the ships you sink and allows for many things to be changed with one click.
SH5 is a good game. Its problem is that they changed the goal of the game. There are gameplay changes which radically affect the way the campaign works, and if what you want is a realistic career you won't find it there. Instead they have a goal-oriented mission group in which you are required to sink certain ships and down a set amount of tons in order to progress. Modders are working on it, but it still has a way to go.

It is a matter of personal taste. With our great group of SHIII Modders I prefer SHIII as it is constantly getting better. I have all the Silent Huter sims but the only one I play is SHIII (GWX).

Well, doyou want to fight in the pacific or atlantic. I personally prefer SH3 because of its setting and theres a lot more traffic in areas. In SH4 theres a lot of ocean and finding ships could prove difficult. But no one here will agree Id say just buy both and play them at the same time, you will learn a lot.:yeah:

I'm in the same situation here. I got back to SubSim and Silent Hunter after a long time and I'm back to SH3/GWX.
It would be really great if SH4/5 got the same amount of attention SH3 got as Steve points out. For me the problem with SH3/GWX (any supermod really) is that it is an old game and it has started showing its age. Don't get me wrong I love it but no matter the amount of work people put on it I think we have reached the point where having something like GWX/NYGM/WAC/SH3Cmdr on SH4/5 will really benefit the game and the community.
Obviously until this happens we're "stuck" with SH3
