Since i, obviously, was dumb enough to buy a half finished game, SH5, i went here to try and fix it. Just to be greatly disappointed with a download limit on mods, making this even worse. I have never seen or experienced a game more hard to play EVER than this game. Since i bought this game i guess i have played it for max 24h and the rest i've spent trying the following:
To be able to play it, i've spent more than two weeks (trying to) reading forums, installing, uninstalling, having to learn what JSGM is, reading tutorials for that, whatching youtube videos for JSGM, having to learn what "ctd" (crash to desktop) mean, playing the game for some seconds, then going back here to search for mods, trying to be a programmer, downloading 4gb patches, playing the game with or withour the 4bg patch, searching for mods which is totally impossible with the search function on this forum, reading more threads with 1 million different colours making it more impossible to get a comprehensive view, trying to download a megamod not designed for my keyboard and getting halfway of above said download limit. I've been installing, uninstalling mods and getting no where.
Can anyone explain why i should play this game or even bother to try to continue to play it???
And not all hardcore players are, nor want to, try to be a programmer or search 100 threads to play a game.
Why can't you have 1 (one) thread with a program (name.exe) that just patches with the most common UPDATED mods so i don't have to try to act as a programmer?????
Put this post as a sticky please with 1 (one) USEFUL answer and that exe-file i want.
This is my, as i feel now, last post in this matter.

You are not alone topper6:
the same happened to me and to many other newbies around here.
This game can be like a demanding lover. If you want to enjoy it, you should be ready to toil a bit for it. With some patience and with the right head-ups (there are several neat guides for beginners on this forum) it is not so difficult getting a basic mod soup to work.
Indeed, the challenge of making the game to work according to our tastes can be part of the pleasure, or rather the worst nightmare you ever had. At some point you can decide that it is not worth the effort. :yep:

Hey man, you are making yourself ill about this game. My two cents suggestion for you is to get a short break from it, and to come back when you will feel a bit more positive. :)
Topper, I've had SH5 for a just over a year. I didn't get it when it first came out as all I heard was nothing good about it and the problems everyone was having with it. So I waited until there were enough mods out to improve the simulation. Yeah, simulation as it's not a game. Yeah, UBI dropped the ball on us with an 'out of the box' broken sim. I'd say SH5's best redeming feature out of the box is it's graphics. In this sim are fantastic, best I've seen for any of the SH series.
So I bought it, installed it and was throughly lost, even with the small amount of mods installed. This is not SH3, the learning curve is a bit more intence. Advice is to read the manul on the dvd, and just play with it. Use the single missions to learn all you can. Once you can fire torpedos and use the deck gun to hit something you'll have a start. Your XO, Navigator and others in the crew are just as important as in real life...... use them. For instance the XO is a must for Battle Stations and Silent Running... don't use them and yer dead. Your buddy up on the conn is the one you call on to man the flack and deck guns. The Chief you need to get repairs done faster. And the Torpedo man isn't to be forgotten either.
Don't give up. there are modders here on SS that are working just as hard on SH5 as they did on SH3 to make it the sim it should have been. TDW is one of many that keep plugging away. Hang in there and clam down, you'll get the knack of it in time. It's not a sim to just throw on your PC and figure you're going rack up a large amount of tonnage right out of the sub pens.
Just my 2 cents to help your get over your frustrations.... and believe me, we've all been just as frustrated as you are. :yep: ;)

I do not get it....
I am not a modŽer and I am not a programmer, far from it....
I installed SH5 from steam, did not like it. Found this place Thursday evening, played it fully modŽed as pr Sobers mod list, whiteout a few on Sunday and have not had one single problem since:hmm2:

There you go, Kendan452, there is a Santa Claus after all. Now read the forums, practice single missions and, above all, when you have a problem post it here.
We were all disillusioned new comers at one time and now we're all SH5 addicts. The help is here, keep using it.
Welcome aboard!

Same. I went from never even having heard of SH5 to having it installed with a good modset and ready to go in just a few hours.
I am not a programmer or computer scientist either. I can't even do pre algebra but I do enjoy learning new things, especially if they are related to something that I think might be fun, like SH5. It wasn't so much a chore to install the mods as it was just a step in the process. I learned some things, found a cool website, and got a good game in the process. Not really sure how to make it any more clear than it already is.

their really nice mod out here that some people have done and make the game really better to play than stock. If it was not for these modders this would be a dead game for me and give thanks and credit to you guys that work to improve this game to bad ubisoft or any game company would not hire these guys to make sub sim

If you believe the search function is terrible on this forum then search your keywords in google, it will shoot you here anyways.
As soon as I had a question about SH5 I would google the subject and invariably end up here so I just made an account.
It's very rare that I haven't got an answer to a question by searching google or Subsim.
One thing I might add : The most frustrating episode of my SH5 adventure was deleting (manually, one by one) 60 saved games from a campaign I didn't like, and starting a new one which went extremely well, then crashing out of the game only to lose all the saved games from the new campaign, and reload the 60 saved games from the crappy campaign I had previously deleted because of the online synch deal.
My advice : Turn the mother off from Uplay and avoid personal grief, void of existence, possible damage to household items, save-game paranoïa, or implied family disruption.

Silent Hunter 5 is actually a great game! It's pulse-pounding, exciting, and, with one slip of the mouse, you could be dead!
It's just a shame that ubisoft didn't specify that it's not a subsim, it's a training program for programmers!

Love the chat. There is one answer that I keep in mind when I boot up SH5, 3 or 4.
One, that as a game, it's a different kind of game. I have to remember all the time that this is a simulation. Granted, it's botched out of the box, but if you compare the amount of data that most arcade style games process with a simulation type I think you'll find that this is a much larger enterprise. With an arcade style, I have my favorites but I'll pull "Brothers in arms, hells highway" for instance, you have a pre-defined path to go along with your mission. You cannot sway from this path. Win or lose and it's that simple. I'm going to shorten this... With the simulation, you have basically a world map, or one that is huge. With any number of outcomes and scenarios. You can play a good modded game with just a few of the "go-to" mods that change important features or tools like the User Interface. The stock graphics are not that bad, but one or two good graphics mods and that improves dramatically.
I play the stock missions and I have a blast with that for now.
Point is, we get tangled up in everything that's going on with new improvements to the game/sim but it's really up to ourselves how deep we want to go with these before we say, I'm ready to play.
I took the other approach too. I became interested in the modding to a degree. I made it fun. Does this game (and the others) want to make me pull out what's left of my hair?? On occasion, yes.
Like the Gap suggested, maybe take a bit of a breather. But if you're like me I'll bet you can't stay away for too long. The sim does have a magic that compels me to play all the time. I hope you stay as I hate to see anyone go away before the magic happens.
Cheers mate.

Yeah, likewise.
I feel your pain but it could be worse topper. It took me nearly a week to get the thing installed and then running beyond the load up screens which involved sifting through the program files to fix and then had to deal with blank panels and buttons and CTD's for which I had to manually modify my operating system to fix (vista=3gb switch) and then I had to wrestle with the UI and all the in-game bugs and after all that I still can't use my legitimately purchased hardcopy offline!
Phew!
Anyway, if it wasn't such a passion there's no way I would've perservered with it, but then, I guess that's what subsim is all about eh?
When I was younger I had an amstrad with a black and white screen that I used to spend many hours on trying to play 'the Hunt for Red October - based on the book', so when I finally got SHV working it was enough to make it worth the while for me just to see that VIIB sailing around. Damn it looks incredible!
Cheers to the Dev's but it doesn't exactly endear you to the publishers does it.
Keep at it, it's worth the while!
Hello!
This is my first post on here, but i have always read a lot.. still, i felt that this would be a good first post!
You need to give this game a chance because i honestly think its brilliant.
I have played SH3 and 4 and i was put off from 5 because of all the bad press, and i will say that STOCK, this game is not worth it (apart from the eye candy). but slap a few mods on there, in specific TDW new UI and maybe Dynamic environment for example, and it really becomes a gem.
I even watched Das Boot again because it reminds me SO much of the feeling i got the first time i watched that movie.
Dont be put off, give it a shot, and i reckon you wont be dissapointed.
Good luck,

all good comments but the original poster, true to his word, has seen fit to not return to this thread after his first post so we can only hope he at least returned to read some of the comments posted here and put a little effort into modding this game so it is enjoyable.
if not, its his loss

Yes it is his loss. Just merely patching the game with my patcher makes the game 1000% better :D Slap a UI mod on, an environment mod, IRAI (for the AI), and maybe an interior mod and a sound mod and it's a very fun experience
