Might as well start this now. So, this comes from the same guy who made
"Devil's Descent" and is again a story-driven campaign where you get to make
the decision(s) for me. :yep:

Of course, there will be SPOILERS, so don't read this if you're planning on
playing through the campaign in the future.

This time, the campaign is from the German side during "Operation Lüttich"
and is played with much larger force than in DD.

There appears to be a great wall of China equivalent wall of text before
the first mission so, I'll post the narrative in 4-5 parts over a day or two
to make it less exhausting to read.

Campaign Briefing

Situation

0800 6 August 1944, 116. Panzerdivision HQ, W of Sourdeval

The US First Army has crushed our positions to the west of Saint-Lo with a
massive assault. They have been pushing us very hard ever since. The lines
have stabilized temporarily around Mortain as the US Third Army pushes south
around our flank. While we are in danger of encirclement, the Third Army's
rapid advance has in turn left their own flank wide open.

To exploit the situation, our 7th Army is beginning a massive counterattack
with the objective of cutting off the enemy advance by seizing Avranches.
We are launching an attack with the 1. and 2. SS-Panzerdivisions attacking
in the north towards Juvigny-le-Terte and Chérencé-le-Roussel, respectively.

Mission

Your task is to spearhead the 116. Panzerdivision's advance, leaving the
armored units of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 60 to exploit the initial penetration
of American lines. You will attack with the objective of reaching Chérence-le-Roussel,
and, once that village is secured, you will hold the road open while the remainder
of the division advances on Avranches.

Friendly Forces

Your command consists of 1., 2., and 4. (Heavy) Panzergrenadier Kompanies (Motorized)
of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156, as well as a Panther platoon and a Panzer IV
platoon from Panzer-Regiment 16. You will also be supported by the divisional
artillery and Panzer reconnaissance battalion as available.

Enemy Forces

Enemy forces in the vicinity come from the 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment
as well as the 746th Tank Battalion. Hopefully they will not be expecting an attack.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Characters

PERSONNEL OF KAMPFGRUPPE MAGSBURG, 116. PANZERDIVISION

OBERSTLEUTNANT von Magsburg, CO I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156
Von Magsburg comes from a noble family and has spent most of his life in Berlin.
Von Magsburg joined the army in 1925, and his two sons followed him into the army.
Both were promising junior officers who died on the Eastern Front; his youngest
died at Kursk in 1943, and his eldest has just perished. Von Magsburg himself
was severely injured in late 1943 and has only just finished his recuperation.

MAJOR Klein, XO I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156
Klein grew up as a factory worker in Munich. He joined the army in 1933, and rose
rapidly through the ranks. Klein has fought extensively on the Eastern Front
and has a massive facial scar to show for it.

HAUPTMANN Leifheim, CO 1./I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156
Leifheim, and Austrian career soldier, is a veteran of North Africa; he was one
of the last officers to be evacuated before Tunisia fell. He has also fought
with distinction throughout the Normandy campaign, and has more experience fighting
the western Allies than any of the other KG Magsburg officers.

HAUPTMANN Wohnhas, CO 2./I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156
Wohnhas is the youngest company commander in the 116. Panzerdivision. The only combat
experience he had is against the British earlier in the Normandy campaign.
Wohnhas has a particular hatred for the western Allies.

OBERLEUTNANT Behn, CO 1./1./I./Panzer-Regiment 16
Behn is an experienced armor officer from Frankfurt. He has already become a
tank ace from the battles around Caen.

OBERLEUTNANT Peters, CO 1./1./II./Panzer-Regiment 16
Peters, a relatively young armor officer from Leipzig, appears to be sullen
and slightly erratic.

"Getting Rolling" (Narrative 1/4)

0800, 6 August 1944, 116. Panzerdivision HQ, W of Sourdeval

"Heil Hitler! Oberstleutnant Dieter von Magsburg, reporting for duty!"
Von Magsburg snapped a crisp Sieg Heil to the Major General standing by a large
table across the room. The Major General sighed and replied with the army salute.
Von Magsburg grinned and replied with an army salute of his own.

Now smiling slightly, the Major General shook von Magsburg's hand. "Good to meet
you, Oberstleutnant. Generalmajor Hans von Nordheim. No trouble with the Jabos
on your way in, I take it?" The lieutenant colonel shook his head. Von Nordheim
gestured to the table. "I'm afraid your holiday in that hospital bed has come to
and end."

Von Magsburg stiffened a little as the pair walked toward the table. "It was no
holiday hearing that my son was killed by the Russians."

"Yes, I heard about your boy, I'm sorry." The pair arrived at the table.
"Unfortunately, fighting the Amis is just as hard as fighting the Russians,
and we've got a lot of work to do." He pointed to a series of arrows drawn
on the map. Von Magsburg quickly focused on the line emanating from the 116.
Panzerdivision, starting at Sourdeval and ending at Saint-Pois. "Seventh Army
is in full retreat after the major Allied offensive that broke through our
positions at Saint-Lo last month. OKW has ordered us to counterattack towards
Avranches in concert with the SS Panzer divisions holding down our southern flank.
You will lead our Kampfgruppe in our division's vanguard."

"Very well, sir. When does the attack start?"

Von Nordheim cast an apologetic look at his newest subordinate. "Midnight."

Von Magsburg stared at his division commander in disbelief. "Tonight?"

Von Nordheim nodded and replied sternly, "I'm sorry, but the officer who was
supposed to lead the attack was killed yesterday while reconnoitering the route.
The good news is that his executive officer, Major Klein, is very thorough,
and all of their planning and preparations should help you pick up where he left off."

"I'll get it done, sir," replied von Magsburg resolutely.

"Good." Von Nordheim walked von Magsburg over to the wall, where the division's
unit structure was laid out. "You're in command of what's left of I. Battalion,
Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156. Your Kampfgruppe consist of two motorized Panzergrenadier
companies, supported by the battalion weapons company, a Panther platoon and a
Panzer IV platoon. You'll be reinforced by divisional reconnaissance assets and
artillery as available."

"Are they at full strength?" asked von Magsburg, knowing full well that the division's
units had been chewed up by the constant fighting against the British.

Von Nordheim cast a knowing glanceat von Magsburg. "They are now," he replied grimly.
"We gutted the survivors of 3. Kompanie to get 1., 2., and 4. Kompanies to
full strength. The tank companies are in even worse shape; you're getting 5
of the 28 Panthers left in the division, and 5 of the 22 remaining Panzer IVs."

"Well, they'll have to do. What's my Kampfgruppe's role in this attack?"

"You'll be spearheading the division's drive for the first phase of the attack.
It'll be your job to punch through the American front and hold the crossroads
at Chérencé-le-Roussel open for the rest of our division. Once we're past their
first line of defense the armored boys in the Panzergrenadier-Regiment 60
Kampfgruppen will handle the exploitation." Von Nordheim looked at his watch.
"I'm afraid I need to go to a conference with General von Funck. Major Klein
will fill you in on everything else." The two exchanged salutes.
"Dismissed."

"Getting Rolling" (Narrative 2/4)

0945, 6 August 1944, I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156 HQ, W of Sourdeval

"Heil Hitler!" The scarred officer in major's uniform waited for von Magsburg's
response.

"Heil Hitler," von Magsburg replied unenthusiastically. "Major Klein?" he asked,
extending his hand.

Klein shook von Magsburg's hand suspiciously. He did not seem to approve of
von Magsburg's lack of enthusiasm for the Nazi salute. "I see General von
Nordheim has briefed you."

Von Magsburg ignored the suspicion in Klein's demeanor. "Not well enough.
Is the Kampfgruppe assembled? I'd like to meet the rest of my subordinates."

Klein shook his head. "The troops are all assembled, but the company and platoon
commanders are either on leader's reconnaissance or dealing with supply issues.
They'll be back by 1030, though."

"That'll have to do. All right, we're attacking tonight at midnight. That's about
all I know. Tell me more about the terrain and the enemy dispositions."

"Of course, sir." Klein took a large map out of his coat pocket and laid it out
on the hood of their Kübelwagen. "The road we'll be pushing down is a relatively
straight shot to Chérencé-le-Roussel. The terrain along the route is generally
open and has a lot of large fields, but we'll occasionally need to push through
villages and forests. The Americans have the 1st Battalion of their 39th Infantry
Regiment established along the route. The American infantry lacks èlan in
the attack, but they are distressingly tenacious defenders. Hopefully, though,
they won't be expecting an attack."

"We can't rely on hope-based tactics, Major. I don't want us to underestimate
them. Where's the front line?"

"The Americans are defending a factory complex only a little way down the road.
It's not particularly valuable but it and a nearby dairy farm dominate the road
and they'll need to be cleared before we can push the rest of the division through."

"Got it. What's the plan?"

"We're going to attack with no artillery preparation. For one thing, we're short
on ammunition, and it will help us surprise them. We'll lead with Hauptmann Ingo
Leifheim's 1. Kompanie, supported by Oberleutnant Behn's Panther platoon and
Oberleutnant Peters' Panzer IV platoon. While we're mopping up the factory complex
and the farm, we'll send some scouts down the road and see what the American
defenses are like further on."

"Sounds good. What's the timetable for our advance?"

"HQ wants us in control of Chérencé-le-Roussel by 0700 at the latest."

"All right, shouldn't be a problem. Is there anything else I should know?"

"That should be everything." Klein thought for a bit, and then added, "The weather
tomorrow is supposed to be very cloudy if not foggy, it should help protect us
from the American planes."

"Excellent. Dismissed, Major."

"Getting Rolling" (Narrative 3/4)

2300, 6 August 1944, I./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 156 HQ, W of Sourdeval

"Load extra HE, boys, we're going up against some Ami infantry tonight," said
Lt.Behn as he strolled around his Panther platoon in the grim darkness.

"Your men all ready, Oberleutnant?" asked von Magsburg, approaching his leading
tank platoon's assembly area.

Lt.Behn snapped a crisp army salute. "Yes, sir. Just making final preparations
and checks now."

"Good to hear. We're going to need your boys to fight well tonight."

"Don't worry, sir. You can count on my Panzertruppen."

"Good luck," von Magsburg said as he shook hands with the Frankfurter tank
commander. He began to walk away when he heard the telltale sound of a Kübelwagen
approaching. He squinted in the darkness, and was surprised to see that the
passenger was Generalmajor von Nordheim. Von Magsburg and Behn saluted.
"Good evening, sir." As von Nordheim approached, it was clear that the major
general was in a foul mood.

"No, it damn well isn't, Oberstleutnant," the divisional commander spat, tearing
his gloves off. He straightened up and softened his tone. "I'm sorry, von Magsburg.
Didn't mean to take it out on you. I've got some bad news, though. Apparently,
our division's deployment has 'delayed' 2. Panzerdivision, so the fact that
they're not going to be ready for another six hours is somehow OUR fault," he said
ruefully. "I've talked it over with my other officers, but I've waited for your
input to make a decision. Should we delay our advance ot coincide with theirs?
That'd delay our start time to 0500."

"It'd give us more visibility during the attack." Von Magsburg thought for a little.
"Is the weather report holding out?"

"I should think so; I imagine the morning will be pretty socked in."

"In that case, we should still be safe from the Jabos. Let's wait and make a concerted
punch with the 2. Panzerdivision."

Von Nordheim nodded. "I would have attacked now, but I trust your judgment.
Very well, we'll wait for them. Let your boys get some more rest."

"Getting Rolling" (Narrative 4/4)

0445, 7 August 1944, 116. Panzerdivision Start Line, W of Sourdeval

"Fifteen minutes, make your final fuel and ammunition checks," said Behn to
his XO in almost a whisper. The entire Kampfgruppe was assembled and ready to
move out. Aside from the tankers and truck drivers, all 408 pairs of eyes were
glued to the south, watching the flashes and listening to the rumbling of the
SS Panzer divisions' artillery hammering the American positions around Mortain.
The soldiers had already finished whispering their prayers, glancing one last
time at the pictures of their wives, girlfriends, and families, and reading once
more the last letter from their sweethearts. Now there was nothing left to do
but wait and suck fervently on their unlit cigarettes.

Once again, a Kübelwagen approached from the east, and once again, it contained
von Nordheim. The divisional commander's attitude had clearly been improved by
some sleep.

"All ready, von Magsburg?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good, good," said von Nordheim distantly. An awkward silence prevailed for a
few seconds, punctuated only by the scream of a Nebelwerfer volley to the south.
"Can I speak to you privately, Oberstleutnant?"

"Of course, sir," replied von Magsburg, following his commander to the side of
the road.

After a short pause, von Nordheim began. "I just wanted to say one last thing
to you. You know what our mission is. You know what your Führer expects from you.
But that doesn't convey the importance of what we're doing here. To be honest,
this attack is the probably die letzte Hoffnung, the final hope, for Seventh Army."

Von Magsburg nodded grimly. "I know, Generalmajor. I know."

Von Nordheim clapped his hand on his subordinate's shoulder. "Well, don't let me
keep you then. Good luck."

As von Magsburg approached the head of the column once again, Behn showed him the
thumbs-up from the hatch of his Panther. Von Magsburg returned it. With a roar,
Behn's Panther started up, and the big cat rumbled off into the night.

"Getting Rolling" (Part 1/4)

Situation

0500, 7 August 1944

The 116. Panzerdivision is beginning it's assault towards Chérencé-le-Roussel.
Kampfgruppe Magsburg is in the lead. The SS Panzer Divisions to the south began
their attack on schedule, but owing to the delay of the 2. Panzerdivision's attack,
the 116. Panzerdivision has also held it's assault until now; the two Wehrmacht
Panzer Divisions will be attacking simultaneously on the north flank of Operation
Lüttich.

Mission

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is to clear the factory complex and the dairy farm of American
forces no later than 0600 in order to open the road west.

Friendly Forces

Before the Kampfgruppe arrives, two reconnaissance elements of PSW 234/1s and Puma
recon vehicles will identify enemy positions for the Kampfgruppe to attack.
Your Kampfgruppe is leading with one motorized Panzergrenadier Company (1. Kompanie),
supported by the Kampfgruppe's Panther platoon and Panzer IV platoons. No offboard
support is available. The company will arrive by platoons at 5-minute intervals.
You will also be supported by a squad from the battalion's pioneer platoon.

Enemy Forces

The enemy consists of American infantry. They are not believed to have any heavy
weapons or artillery support. They should not receive any air support in the dark.
Their positions may have been strengthened by foxholes, antitank obstacles, and mines.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/01-45.jpg
I start the mission with a small recon force, so let's put them to use.
"Recon A" heads to the southwest to take a peek at the road and the dairy farm.
"Recon B" secures the immediate area to my front.
Hopefully, the Americans are trigger happy and expose their positions.
Graciously, earlier recon have given me some intel about the enemy positions.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-36.jpg
"Recon A" takes a look at the road, but spot nothing.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-31.jpg
Same with the dairy farm. I keep "Recon A" here to provide fire support towards
the farm.
"Recon B" also reports no contacts.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-23.jpg
OOooo! Toys! Erhm.. Leifheim's 1. Company and Behn's Panther platoon finally arrive.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-18.jpg
I immediately order 2. Platoon to send scouts ahead to the factory.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/06-17.jpg
Surprisingly, there appears to be no Americans on the northeast side of the complex.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/07-15.jpg
The rest of the platoon moves up.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/08-12.jpg
With the forest more or less secured, I order 1. Platoon to join the 2. Better be safe.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/09-9.jpg
Scouts check out the building by the factory hall, again, no contact. Rest of the 2. Platoon then occupies the building.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/10-8.jpg
I also send scouts to take a look what lies around the corner.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/11-7.jpg
Oh my.. we seem to have a bit of an traffic jam developing here..

2. Platoon occupies the rest of the buildings.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee274/Finnish_Ferret/03-1.jpg
I decide to pull the Panzer IVs from the reserve and form a line between the "Recon B" units.
I move 3. Platoon to the forest by the road, I really want to know what those '?' marks are at the bend.

Things heat up at the factory as the Americans open fire at the 2. Platoon, who quickly return the favor.

With the help from the 3. Platoon.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee274/Finnish_Ferret/07-1.jpg
And soon the opposing side's guns fell silent. Everyone's either pinned down, retreating or dead.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee274/Finnish_Ferret/08-1.jpg
Now that the enemy is counting floor tiles, I send 1. Platoon to circle around them.

Aaaand 1/1 attacks again! (without the retreating bit this time)

The ATG position by the road is quickly overwhelmed by the 3. Platoon's assault.

"Decisions"

0600, 7 August 1944, Road E of Brouains

"Bad news, sir," reported Major Klein. "Our scouts took small arms fire pushing
down the main road. Then we sent them into the village called Brouains to the west,
and they took fire there as well. The Amis appear to be well dug-in along both routes."

"Not ideal," understated von Magsburg. "Any intel on either route? We're going to
need to attack down one of them."

"We have some aerial photographs taken a few weeks ago." Major Klein handed von Magsburg
a photograph with some lines drawn in blue grease pencil. "Route A takes us through the
forest to the north. The road itself is the main road and it's paved, unlike Route B,
a gravel road that takes us through the town of Brouains. The problem is that the terrain
to either side is heavily wooded, making some perfect ambush spots. If the Amis are dug in
there as deeply as they seem to be, it'll be a knife fight in those woods. Of course, Brouains
will mean urban combat, which is no picnic either."

The company and tank platoon commanders had gathered around the battalion officers during the
discussion. The calm, collected, and experienced commander of 1. Kompanie, Hauptmann Leifheim,
took a long look at the map and said, "I'd want to stay out of the woods if I were you, Oberstleutnant.
We can't use our tanks very well unless the enemy is out in the open."

Lt. Peters, the dour and somewhat shy commander of the Panzer IV platoon, replied, "But they could
be equally useless in the town. I say go on the better-Route A."

The young, aggressive commander of 2. Kompanie, Hauptmann Wohnhas piped up. "Why not just drive
up both routes and kill all the bastards?"

Taken somewhat aback by Wohnhas' apparent bloodthirstiness, von Magsburg paused for a second.
"Well, I suppose that's an option." Regaining his composure, he looked at the map again.
"The first decision we need to make is whether or not to split our forces. Thoughts?"

Wohnhas replied, "You already know what I want to do."

Leifheim declared, "I disagree with splitting up. Our doctrine for armored units emphasizes
concentrated, powerful, single thrusts."

Klein spoke up next. "However, take a look at the map. There's a crossroads just to the west
of Brouains that is an absolutely key position for anyone trying to control the road to Chérence-
le-Roussel; it's sure to be defended strongly. If we can launch two thrusts, each of which
is strong enough to overwhelm the forces in front of them, we could hit the enemy at the crossroads
from two sides."

Von Magsburg looked to Peters, who simply shrugged. Von Magsburg then looked to Behn, who replied,
"It's your call, sir."

Von Magsburg nodded while thinking to himself. "All right, here's what we'll do..."

1) Keep the Kampfgruppe concentrated
2) Split up the Kampfgruppe and attack Brouains as well as the road to the north

"Divide and conquer"; stick together. Would prefer route B: urban is not ideal for tanks but you get better lines of sight down a street than through a forest. :hmmm:

A very tough call. Fight two hard battles now to fight an easier one later, or fight an easier one now to fight a tougher one later.

I'm with Klein on this one, split and attack. With any luck the Amis won't expect you to attack both routes and will be weaker on one than the other (probably weaker in the town due to its easier defence). Once you've pushed them aside you can then launch a pincer movement on the crossroads which will help you overcome the defences there.

Viel Glück!

Aaaanywho:

"Around the Bend" (Part 1)

Situation

0600 7 August 1944

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is moving north along the main road to Chérencé-le-Roussel. Divisional
scouts took small arms fire while rounding the bend in the road ahead; it can be assumed to
be occupied by enemy infantry. In order to allow the passage of the division along the road,
the enemy infantry must be eliminated.

The other half of the Kampfgruppe is attacking the village of Brouains to the south in concert
with this attack.

A light fog is starting to form. Visibility should start out at around 250m but will improve
as the day gets brighter.

Mission

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is to clear the road of enemy forces no later than 0715 in order to allow
the division's advance to continue unhindered.

Friendly Forces

Your Kampfgruppe is leading with one motorized Panzergrenadier Company (1.Kompanie), supported
by the Kampfgruppe's Panther platoon. This force will arrive in five minutes and is preceded
by a small reconnaissance elements. You will be receiving a very limited amount of support
from the divisional 105mm artillery battery.

Enemy Forces

The enemy consists of American infantry, although little else is known about this position.
They should not receive any air support given the fog.

Like in the previous mission, I start with five armored cars. I'll use them
more aggressively this time as the terrain is cluttered with bocage, forests
and all kinds of nasty places to put ATGs to. The 234/1s go west to scout
out the fields and the Pumas will check the main road.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/01-49.jpg

The 234/1s come under fire from a single scout team. I return fire and the
enemy team is either killed or retreats as I lose visual on it.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-39.jpg

Same situation with the Pumas, an American scout team fires at the Puma
driving on the road and manages to kill the commander. The Puma pops
smoke and starts to retreat.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-34.jpg

But not before returning the favor in the form of a 50mm HE round.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-26.jpg

My plan. :smug: What?! :stare:
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-21.jpg

Ok, maaaaybe it needs some explanation. My initial plan is to stick close to
the road. Considering the terrain is a maze of death for anything but
infantry, I think the safest place for the Panthers is on the road. I will be
baby-sitting them with all 3 of my infantry platoons, 4th platoon (weapons)
stays in reserve.

"Around the Bend" (Part 2)

The scout team spotted earlier by the 234/1s is still very much alive. 234/1 and a inf squad fire at it, but fail to kill it.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/01-50.jpg

There seems to be foxholes on a hill just to the north of 3.Platoon. I later note that the position is most likely manned by 1 infantry squad split in three teams.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-40.jpg

2.Platoon secures the first road bend and the Panthers are called to move forward.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-35.jpg

Oh that's BULL****! *sighs, clears throat* Out of nowhere, an ATG one-shots the other 234/1 by 3.Platoon. No one sees it even after it fires a second shot.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-27.jpg

The remaining 234/1 takes revenge by shooting at a inf team spotted in the foxholes.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-22.jpg

2.Platoon comes in contact with a scout team by the first road bend. Think this is the same one the Pumas spotted earlier.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/06-21.jpg

To illustrate the pure hell this mission has been so far; these three squads all have a great LOS to the forest where the scout team is. Not one of them saw it.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/07-19.jpg

1.Platoon begins their task of securing the right side of the road.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/08-15.jpg

And after 30 turns I have advanced.. uh.. 300 meters, maybe? 3.Platoon is held back by the enemies up on the hill and, I don't believe I'm saying this, the one scout team that refuses to die.
I'll probably detach one of the Panthers from the column to help out 3.Plt, I really don't want to advance with the other platoons before I can get the 3. to secure the left flank.

Right. New plan. As there seems to be scout teams EVERYWHERE, my infantry
is next to useless. I haven't spotted a single enemy squad first, always
only after they've opened fire on me. So, it's time to start actually using
those Panthers since I have them. See, what I may or may have not forgotten is
that the Americans probably only have 57mm ATGs; peashooters against the thick
frontal armor of the Panther. Going for that field also gives me the chance to
concentrate the firepower of all my Panthers against any threats. At any rate,

I thought about bypassing the forest from the far left, but then I remembered
that my objective isn't getting to the other side of the map, but to basically
kill or route the enemy units. The notes say there are hidden terrain objectives
the AI tries to hold. I'm guessing they are along the road. The forest
with all the foxholes was certainly one of them. I might send a small force to
check out the route to the left, there was that one ATG there, so there might
be an hidden objective there too.

The arty is a PITA because it takes so long to fire it's barrage, in the 105mm's

"Going to Town" (Part 1)

Situation

0600 7 August 1944

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is moving west along a side road to Chérencé-le-Roussel. Divisional scouts
took small arms fire while approaching the small village of Brouains; it can be assumed to be
occupied by enemy infantry. In order to allow the passage of the division along this road,
the enemy infantry must be eliminated.

The other half of the Kampfgruppe is clearing the road to the north in concert with this attack.

A light fog is starting to form. Visibility should start out at around 250m but will improve
as the day gets brighter.

Mission

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is to clear the town of Brouains of enemy forces no later than 0715 in
order to allow the division's advance to continue unhindered.

Friendly Forces

Your Kampfgruppe is leading with one motorized Panzergrenadier Company (2.Kompanie), supported
by the Kampfgruppe's Panzer IV platoon. This force will arrive in five minutes and is preceded

The enemy consists of American infantry, although little else is known about this position.

The terrain is interesting here. There is a ridge running through the map, from NW to SE.
This means I will be fighting downhill once I reach the outskirts of the village. :yeah:
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/01-55.jpg

While I wait for the main force to get here, I send one of my Pumas to check the left flank
and a dismounted Puma crew is sent across the field to the west. If the right turns out clear,
I'll attack from there. Less hedgerows and the terrain should cover my approach through the field.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-45.jpg

When playing with Crécy, we don't use 1st turn arty, so I had completely forgotten about it until
now. I give the Amis a wake up call by lobbing all 28 105mm rounds right smack middle of the village.

Aaaand they literally slam majority of the rounds right in the middle of the 172m area target marker. :shifty:

Both sides of the road are clear, so I start moving both platoons forward.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-46.jpg

A little while later, I finally spot my first enemy team. They are inside a 2-story building
in the center of the village.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-41.jpg

And they are pretty good shots too.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-33.jpg

The road is surely watched by either a Bazooka team or an ATG, so I have my pioneers blow holes
through the hedges, so my armor can drive up to the 1.Plt's position and provide overwatch from

30 turns in and I feel like I have the upperhand. 1.Plt's position offers a good view to a part of
the village, I will probably concentrate my forces there. 2.Plt's area isn't ideal, but does have
a good LOS to the intersection and some parts of the town. I'm thinking of sending 1 squad from 2.Plt
to the white T-shaped building on the northwest side of the town. The building would provide a very good
line of fire to a big part of the town. But that might be too risky.

"Going to Town" (Part 3)

I've decided to launch the attack from the 1.Platoon's position, using the whole 2.Kompanie.
3. and 4.Platoon on their way to the front.

1.Plt begins to take fire from all around the town.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-47.jpg

As more contacts keep popping up, I decide to have my mortars dump their rounds into the town.
Hopefully that'll soften them up and makes my life easier once I start the assault.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-42.jpg

The men of 1.Plt can't keep up sufficient firepower, so I order the 4.Plt's MG42s to fix that.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-34.jpg

And that they do, all enemy contacts are quickly pinned down. Unfortunately, it's too late for the 2/1.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-29.jpg

I have the 3.Plt move forward to the hedgerows lining the road. When the time comes, they will be leading
the assault.

The mortar barrage should start on the next turn and probably lasts for 2-3 turns. After that, I'll smoke the road
and order 3.Plt across. While the mortars are firing, I bring 2.Plt to join the rest of the Plts, due to the casualties
the 1.Plt took, I'm thinking of leaving them behind. I also ordered two more Panzer IVs to head over here.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-30.jpg

The inability of my infantry forces me to order one of my Panzer IVs to take care of the ATG.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/06-29.jpg

Luckily, he's a good shot and nails the gun with the first round.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/07-26.jpg

I try to advance with the 2.Platoon, but the main road turns out to be too risky.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/08-22.jpg

I'm winning the fight easily. Think I've sustained only 2 or 3 casualties so far and I have the
fire superiority. But, I ran into a problem: hedgerows turn the town into a maze. 3.Platoon can't
advance directly as there are no holes in the hedges and my pioneers are out of satchel charges.
There looks to be a way through the hedges on the left, which is my best option. It takes more time
to peddle back to the main road, which in turn would give the enemy a chance to concentrate their
fire on 2.Platoon. Speaking of 2.Platoon, I'm thinking of circling them around to the southwest part of
the town, 4.Platoon's MG42s can take their positions to keep the enemy suppressed. If all goes well,
I can then attack the center of the town from both southwest and northeast.

"Crossing Paths"

0720 7 August 1944, Brouains

The sounds of gunfire had not yet died down, but von Magsburg already walked through the
streets of Brouains, shouting orders. "Get someone into that church tower! I need eyes on
those crossroads, now!"

"Jawohl!" came the response as a pair of forward observers began scaling the tall church
tower. Wohnhas approached, leading the column of prisoners taken in the fighting.

"What should we do with them, sir?" he asked.

"Send them to the rear, we don't have the men to take care of them. Get them to the armored,
see if they have some transport space."

Wohnhas gave orders to his men in turn, and moved to join von Magsburg. As he approached,
the forward observers returned from the church tower.

"Sir! We can't see too well in this fog, but the crossroads looks occupied."

"I could have guessed that," von Magsburg noted wryly. "Anything more specific you can tell me?"

The scouts looked at each other and shrugged. "Bunch of guys running around in the open.
Couldn't see any heavier weapons or anything, but it doesn't mean they weren't there."

"Any sign of 1.Kompanie?"

The scout shook his head. "No, sir, but the gunfire from the north seems to have stopped."

"Right. Wohnhas!" he shouted at the company commander, who was returning to the church.
"Round up the infantry and get them back in their trucks! We're pushing the crossroads!"

Oberon

Given how things have been proceeding so far, I'd put money on there being a Sherman or two lurking in the cover by those crossroads, so it's probably a good thing that you'll be attacking from two seperate directions.

The question is, should Kampfgruppe Magsburg wait for 1 Kompanie to arrive in position before launching the assault on the crossroads, or attack just before 1 Koy arrive to draw the Americans attention towards them (allowing 1 Koy to hit them from behind) or assault straight away and hope they have enough firepower to make an impression on the Americans before 1 Koy joins in, otherwise you'll be picking away at them piecemeal rather than overruning them.

Personally I'd hold until 1 Koy is just about ready, then hit the Americans with Magsburg and bring in 1 Koy on the other pincer, with Panzers to fore and aft, the Amis should crumble quickly.

Should.

Should, Like Travis and Bowie should have crumbled quickly...should, like the 24th Regiment of Foot, 5 Coy Field Engineers and the NNH should have been overrun quickly...

We shall see... :salute:

----------------------------------------------------------

"Crossing Paths" (Part 1)

Situation

0730 7 August 1944

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is forcing its way down the main road to Chérencé-le-Roussel. They are
now approaching a major crossroads, which they must clear to allow the division's advance to
continue.

Thanks to two successful thrusts to the east and north of the crossroads, we have the Amis
surrounded and are attacking them from both sides.

The fog remains, but it's now light enough that LOS is not substantially restricted. It should
keep the Jabos away, though.

Mission

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is to clear the crossroads west of Brouains no later than 0845 in order
to allow the division's advance to continue unhindered.

Friendly Forces

Your Kampfgruppe is fully assembled and ready to attack with two companies of Panzergrenadiere
and two tank platoons. You will be receiving a limited amount of support from the divisional
105mm artillery battery.

Enemy Forces

The enemy consists of American infantry, although little else is known about this position.
They should not receive any air support given the fog.

The first 10 turns were mostly me scouting the place with 2.Kompanie, not very screenshot
worthy, hence I give you just an overview.

2.KOMPANIE:
I sent 2.Plt HQ to scout the road ahead, while 4.Plt HQ scouted my left flank, which looks
like a tempting alternative to attack from. Both scouting parties report all clear and I
make my mind about the direction of attack: the left flank. However, I leave 2.Plt
and 1.Plt plus the 3 remaining Panzer IVs in reserve, maybe I can launch a third attack from
the center?

1.KOMPANIE:
When they arrive, I will have to push them straight up the road. Rather take their AT fire
frontally than from the flanks. There's a tall hill (http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-50.jpg) overlooking the crossroads on the top-right
of the map, might be an idea to have one or two Panthers up there.

1st turn arty is called in as well. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y17yY-llArE)

A three pronged attack is good, but be sure to keep the center attack ready to reinforce either pincer movement should they run into problems. Not that I really need to say this, I'm sure you've already got that in mind.

I must say though Dowly, these AARs are tempting me towards CM, the last one I played, IIRC, was the demo for Barbarossa to Berlin and that sucked me in quite well. Might have to have a think when pay day comes around...the only discouragement is the price, which is a tad steep.

Yeah, I was aiming to support whichever flank would need it with the center

that the next major update will be payware (adding such features like movable waypoints :shifty:).
The game itself, while fun, is a rough diamond. So many features and functions
you'd expect to see are still missing after all these years. :nope: Especially

"These Dogs Have Teeth" (Part 1)

Situation

0845 7 August 1944

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is forcing its way down the main road to Chérencé-le-Roussel. The advance
has become much more rapid since Kampfgruppe cleared the crossroads west of Brouains.
They are now approaching the outskirts of the key town itself.

The fog remains, but it's so bright outside now that the fog is no longer a factor for ground combat.

Mission

Kampfgruppe Magsburg is to clear the road northeast of Chérencé-le-Roussel no later than
1000 in order to allow the division's advance to continue unhindered.

Friendly Forces

Your Kampfgruppe is leading with one motorized Panzergrenadier Company (2.Kompanie),
supported by the Kampfgruppe's Panther and Panzer IV platoons. Armored reconnaissance
elements consisting of 4 SdKfz 234/1s and 3 Pumas are leading the way, the leading KG
Magsburg elements are following about 5 minutes behind.

Enemy Forces

We have no information on enemy forces in the vicinity. Your reconnaissance forces are there
to make contact and determine the enemy composition so that you can make an appropriate plan
for your main body to execute.

I split my "4 SdKfz 234/1s and 3 Pumas" into two groups of 2 AC each and order them to
scout up the road using the "Hunt" command (move to contact).

Suddenly, loud shots ran out ahead, and the Kübelwagen's radio crackled to life.
"Sir! We're taking heavy fire! Requesting tank support ASAP!"

"Behn! Get moving-" von Magsburg started to yell at the tank platoon commander, but Behn
was already leaping into his Panther and ordering his driver to speed up even before he was
fully inside. Von Magsburg chuckled. "Well, he's one soldier I don't need to encourage."
Taking the hint, Leifheim feigned weariness as he exited von Magsburg's Kübelwagen and pushed
towards his own.

Well, better do what the man says! Lt.Behn's Panthers will lead on alone, if the Stuarts

Before Behn can get a shot out, he spots 3 more Ami tanks driving down the road.
With balls heavier than the tank he is sitting in, he picks one of the Shermans in the rear
to shoot first, instead of the ones right infront of his Panther.
He shoots...

Mmmm, Panther porn.... :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

Hmmm....

American teleporting tanks at 0:12 do concern me though...looks like the Amis have invested in Chronosphere technology...

The AKD sounds are good, aren't they? Love the Maybach HL230, snarls just fine. :salute:

The Stuart was out of sight and then appears suddenly as someone sees it.

I believe the engine sounds are from the "Mike's vehicles of war" mod. :yep:

Really need to compile my own sound mod, I'm going back and forth between
AKD and Oddball II's sound mods. Both have some very nice sounds, but AKD
has the incoming "snaps", so I prefer that most of the time. :yep:

"These Dogs Have Teeth" (Part 3)

It looks like 2.Kompanie's infantry assets are in worse shape than I thought. Only 3.Platoon
is more or less in full strength, so the task of leading the infantry assault falls on them
yet again. I also order the Panzer IVs to head to the left flank.
(Useless piece of trivia: Every infantry attack by the 2.Kompanie have been led by the 3.Plt)
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/01.jpg

Another Stuart is destroyed by the Panthers.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/02.jpg

I spot 4 Shermans veering off the main road and heading to the east. How many damn tanks are
they going to throw at me?!
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/03.jpg

To counter their flanking attempt, I order 2 Panthers further to the east.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/04.jpg

The lead Sherman gets a shot off and knocks out #3 Panther.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/05.jpg

Lt.Behn returns fire (a full second later...)

The Sherman is hit, but not destroyed. It fires off smoke and retreats.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/07.jpg

The Panzer IVs get to work as they reach their positions on the left flank and the flanking
force is destroyed one Sherman at a time.

With no visible armor threats, I order the Panzer IVs to form a line northeast of the town,
so they can fire at anything still alive down there.

Right, let's end this one. They've surely ran out of armor-

Sigh.. They've surely ran out of armor...... by now so I send the 3.Platoon into the town.
Panzer IVs will close in from the northeast to support the assault. Two Panthers will be moving
with the infantry as well.

The assault starts.

Good decision from this tanker (except for the part where my troops shot him after his surrender )

the time without firing a shot.

"Out of the Hills" (Part 1)

1050 7 August 1944, E of Chérencé-le-Roussel

Von Magsburg gathered his officers around the hood of his Kübelwagen. "Gentlemen! We have
reached our battalion's objective. Get your men resupplied, there's going to be some heavy
fighting for this town, and they'll need all the ammo they can carry." He eyed each of his
officers carefully. "I know we've taken some heavy losses, and there'll be more to come.
But once we take this village, our job is completed. We just need to hold it so the rest of
the division can pass through, and then, if the rest of the division wins-"

"WHEN the rest of the division wins," corrected Klein sternly.

Von Magsburg was not pleased by the interruption. "IF the rest of the division wins, we just
might be able to go home when they cut off the Ami spearhead. Get to it, gentlemen. We've got
some really big guns backing us up on this one, but remember-once they bombardment's over,
we've still got a tough job to do."

***

Situation

1100 7 August 1944

Kampfgruppe Magsburg has reached the outskirts of Chérencé-le-Roussel. The KG is now tasked
with seizing the village and holding the road open for the rest of the division's advance.

Mission

KG Magsburg is to seize Chérencé-le-Roussel no later than 1215 in order to allow the division's
advance to proceed on schedule.

Friendly Forces

Your entire Kampfgruppe is assembled for the assault. You are supported by both the battalion's
light infantry gun platoon and it's armored pioneer platoon. In addition, you have priority of
fires from the division's 150mm battery as well as a Nebelwerfer battery.

Enemy Forces

Enemy forces in the area consists primaly of infantry, but information from prisoners indicates
that the 746th Tank Battalion is in the area as well. The enemy appears to have scattered sparse
minefields in front of their position.

This looks rather straight-forward. Eventho I have the whole KG for this, my infantry count is pretty low, so I need to rely
more on my armor to do the heavy stuff. I won't bother flanking the town from the right, at least not initially, I keep one
infantry platoon in reserve for that. I have both the 150mm and the Nebelwerfer battery strike the town with everything they got,
during the bombardment my mortars will lay down a smoke screen to block LOS as I quickly attack along the road. The smoke lasts
for about 5 turns, I want my troops to advance to the smoke screen's level by the time it dissipates. Three Panthers will be
advancing on the road, supporting the infantry.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/01-65.jpg

The artillery starts the preparation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf3dmS3crKc) and I give the order to move out.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/02-55.jpg

No contacts so far, but just to be sure, I order all of my Panzer IVs to support the advance on the left flank.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/03-49.jpg

As the smoke disappears, I immediately start taking fire from a infantry squad split in three teams. The Panthers get to work.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/04-41.jpg

My infantry gets to their target easily, thanks to the Panthers keeping the Amis' heads down.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/05-36.jpg

First piece of heavier equipment is spotted by the church. I'm suprised it is still operational.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/06-35.jpg

The Sherman gets a shot off, but fails to hit anything. #2 Panther picks it off with it's first shot.

View of the town after the bombardment.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/08-27.jpg

I wonder if this is going to be similar to the last mission in that they get reinforced with armor, the first 8 turns have
been surprisingly easy.

"Out of the Hills" (Part 2)

I get the whole front moving towards the town.
1/1 and 2/1 on the left and 2/2 on the right, armor will move slowly with them.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/01.jpg

The enemy's first line of defence starts to crackle under the Panthers' firepower.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/02.jpg

2/2 suffers some casualties as Ami mortar starts pounding the area around my Panthers.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/03.jpg

Despite the casualties, they get their job done and clear the hedgeline.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/04.jpg

Some of my infantry spots an ATG on the far left side of the town. Unfortunately, none of my
tanks can get a shot at it.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/05.jpg

Another Sherman is lurking in the town.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/06.jpg

He sees one of the squads from 2/1 and scores a direct hit.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/07.jpg

His joy is premature as my Panther moves into a firing position and takes the bastard out.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x462/Dowly/Combat%20Mission%20AAR/LastHope_6_2/08.jpg

I wonder when the 150mm arty stops, it's still hitting the town. :haha:
