Hi Gotmilk,
This would be the way to aim the development of a SH6. The simulation of SH5 or the Idea of SH5 was along these lines. We all know the unfortunate product that ubisoft released, whatever it is now was the result of a lot of hard work from a group of players who loved the game that much to MOD it and turn it into a playable game.
My point; do we really want ubisoft to release another sub sim with this new, seemingly wonderful idea only to be left with their idea of a finished product.
I love the idea of Silent Hunter with this Oculus Rift headset technology. I would not want to have to wait for a year for the game to actually play, something to that effect. I can't wait to own one though, I would love to play any game with it, especially a WWII Sub Sim!.

There are actually a group of hackers who are writing drivers to get existing games work with rift. So far they got skyrim and mirrors edge working.

can you imagine the newest debackle of some reinvented version of DRM UPLAY wrapped around it like some mutated anaconda from hell? :nope:
i think we have seen the best we will ever see coming from ubisoft and anything they release from here on will be worse then anything you can imagine about how bad it could be.
I do know one thing... I WANT ONE! :D
I'd love to have the money to be on Oculus Rift VR. This is something I've waited for for years. Full immersion to the max. It will sell like hotcakes if all goes as planned. LCD sreens will no longer be needed to play games compatable with Oculus Rift. A whole new era of gaming is on it's way in. :D

I'd keep the kickstarter part of the deal, to build a new wwii sub simulator, but I'd spare the occulus... Main reason, one of my eyes is quite lazy so I'm no good at 3-D stuff :88)

John Carmack addressed about the lazy eye issue on the oculus rift.
Basically he said that the 3D effect is not the most important thing in oculus rift. The real immersion comes from the wide angle screen that is surrounding you and thus makes you feel that you are in the game. The 3D thingy where stuff jumps right before your eye is "nice to have" but not necessary.
I contributed to the Kickstarter mainly because i have tons of Unitys project that would hugely benefit from the device, but i hope when the real commercial version is released, then some talented hacker in subsim community will make this work with SH. (Does not have to be SH5. SH4 or SH3 GWX would do just fine)

Actually, now that you mention SH4, I always hope that there is another life or tier coming for SH4. I really love going back to it once in a while, mostly because of the historical aspect and because some aspects of the game look and play really good. Most of the actual gameplay bugs were worked out. I think that the merchant and warships look great. A couple of the mods had the terrain and sea looking good, and I had no problem with the fleetboats, they all looked great, from the inside and out, very realistic. The teleporting thing is hard to go back to but, if this game could somehow be married to the Oculus Rift headset technology, that would breathe a whole new life into SH4. Which is a game that I think is sadly overlooked in the series these days.
Anyway, I optimistic as long as ubisoft doesn't have a hand in it:O:, I can just imagine what playing this would be like with the Oculus Rift gizmo thingamajig...

Hi
Now my Rift unit should arrive in 3 weeks and i have confirmed that there is a driver out there that is compatible with SH5.
It is called vorpX. http://www.vorpx.com/ A custom commerecial driver that has hacked over 50 games to work with Oculus Rift.
When i asked the developer about silent hunter he said that it will work but without stereo3D effect. Which is not a huge loss because you still will get ton of immersion by having a picture wrapped around your head. Head tracking and rolling is also supported.
When i get my unit then SH5 will be amongst the first game that i will try out. If its any good i will let you know.
Personally i hope that this is it. The final nail in the iron coffin that would immerse me enough that i would feel being inside the submarine.
I will keep you posted and give my honest opinion.
How was it sailor? i can just imagine standing at the tower watching my four torpedos on there way to that enormous battleship out in the distance :Kaleun_Salivating:

Hi
while i do have oculus rift the vorpx is not released yet so i have not had a chance to try it out. I did play other games likes skyrim and etc. trough vireo but guess i still have to wait for vorpx to be released.

Just learned today that Tridef added a beta oculus rift support. SH5 is not amongst the supported game but reports are coming all over the places where people have managed to get other (those that are not in the list) games to work as well. Since i know that Tridef drivers are working pretty well with stock SH5 (you must disable shadows, ship spotlights are on screen depth and some other minor issues) then i suspect that it will work equally well with SH5.
I am gonna try it out and if it works as itended then i will report back with a review, screenshots and videos.
