I'm running NYGM 3.6A with h.sie's Version 1.6B1. I've included the 'Night Vision Fix' as well and left the values set by the modders as/is. (By the way I can't thank everyone involved with those mods enough! It's a totally different sim!) I don't think I've used any other mods that mess with the ability for my watch crew to scan the horizon.

Now I'm 99.9% certain NYGM has a 16km environment so I can assume that on a perfect day (no fog, no clouds) my crew can see 16km. At night, with the fix under the same conditions that is reduced to 8km.

My question is how much does fog reduce the vision of my watch crew: light, moderate, heavy. I don't think it's linear and it's pretty tough to test.

from my experience light fog limits vision to around 3KM although you deck crew may still not see ships that you could see with your binoculars.they are funny sometimes like that, not sure about medium but i reckon 1500M at a guess. heavy fog reduces viability to 350M at best so its almost impossible to hunt as you have to track your target very well and plan a good intercept via the hydrophone. even then you may end up too close and your safeties will not turn off in time. this has happened to me on a few occasions were the target is just too juicy not to fire a few rounds off.

i am still using vanilla though so maybe with upgraded atmo your field of vision is slightly higher but those are the basic ranges

edit: was out today and found that you can see ships at 5Km in light fog but your guys only shout them out at around 4.5Km

@ Maceaciadh: thanks for the info!

I'm running NYGM 3.6A and have been experimenting trying to squeeze Markman94's 20km environment into it. One of the problems I'm having is the distance my watch crew spots ships in light fog for instance is still the same for the 16km environment.

The sim.cfg and sensor.cfg "Fog factor" values seem to have no effect, or I'm just doing it wrong, which is probably the case.

I looked into the scene.dat file (ugh!) and there is an obvious place fog distance values but I was under the impression that didn't change the visual range of the watch crew. Again, I'm probably wrong...

i am not sure about that cfg file as it doesn't really tell you what they do. i suggest just playing with them in missions until you find an appropriate level.

i have GWX now and noticed that my range in heavy fog has increased 2 fold so i guess NYGM would have done the same (using 16K atmo mod like you) but at least your guys dont call out the same contact every minute lol ship spotted! oh its gone, another ship spotted! (same bearing)no way it could be the same one, impossibru! (should really get the fix for that)

I recently updated with Stiebler's add-on (patches?) for H.SIE's V16B1. One of the add-ons is the weather meter (It's fantastic, by the way). Now when I start a mission and there is light fog I get a fog warning (i.e. visibility is getting worse!) and the weather meter is a dull white which should mean medium fog.

Unfortunately, I had it all working nicely before then had a melt down and can't recapture the magic! :06: I also had around 16km visibility after installing a 20km environment in light fog. It just worked out that way?!?! That to went bye-bye in the recent implosion.

I'm hoping if I can tweak the way the fog limits my watch crew it everything else will fall into place.
