I am looking to buy some computer games (PC only) for my niece and nephew. I would like suggestions on what games I could get for them.
My requirements are that the game be for the PC and that it does not require an persistent Internet connection. An older game would be quite acceptable.
My niece wants a good haunted house exploration game. Nothing gory, no FPS doom like games, but she likes spooky stuff. I was looking at one (I forget the title) but it appeared to be nothing but a collection of puzzles. What she wants is the "old dark house" experience with candles and thunder storms. A good mystery story plot would be a plus.
My nephew is into D&D. Is the Neverwinter Nights 2 expansions the better choice or are there others that still remain faithful to D&D genre. On the short list is Baulder's Gate series, which I feel is still one of the better RPGs out there. Icewind Dale is also being considered but I was never a fan of that when it came out. PS:T may be a bit too advanced for him.
Any suggestions for two games?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of computer are we looking at here?
Im going to assume (correct me if im wrong) that they arent playing DOS games, and that they are young......
Maybe try out some Scooby Doo games for your neice....if she is that age. If not, you might try wikipedia for a list of games. Wikipedia has some great lists. That isnt my area of expertise. I cant do much if you dont want any gore, language, offensive material.
Has your nephew ever gotten into The Elder Scrolls? The first two are DOS games and incredibly hard, but The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind might be what you're looking for there. It is more kid-friendly than the rest of the series.

It may actually be too scary, but, there are no weapons, it will scare the crap out of you, it has a couple puzzles, its definatly a old dark house with candles (you will greatly appreciate light in this game), and it definatly has a mystery to it.
NWN 2 is a very good game, especially with both the expansions. The first expansion, in particular, is one of the best I've played but is pretty dark. The second one is a great romp in the style of a good, old fashioned D&D table top game: less plot, more running around and you get to build your entire party from scratch if you want.*
Likewise, the first NWN is also pretty good, and also has a pair of great expansions. The problem with both might be that there may be issues with running them on W7. Certainly there were issues with the second game, particularly with the editor.*
The Baldur's gate games are great, but showing their age a little bit now. There's a new, ,upgraded version of BG1 coming out sometime soon on both the PC and the IPad so it might be worth checking that one out. It won't be much, but then, neither will a legacy version. The advantage of the new one is I assume it will have been retooled to work with modern resolutions.*
As for Planescape. Well, being a massive fanboi of the p&p setting I have difficulty looking past it. I think it's the best cprg of all time but I understand why you think it might be too much.*
You know what, any of these games are going to be hours and hours of fun. I don't think you can lose - as long as you can get them to run. Maybe check out Good Old Games.com, I think they sometimes work a bit of magic to get older titles running without too many issues on modern machines.*
Of course, you could always go buy him a copy of the Pathfinder rule book and some dice.....;)

That actually looks pretty cool. I might get that for myself. :)
It does look pretty scary, I would have to play it myself to find out if it is too much for her. Gives me a good excuse to get it. :)
But damn, that's spooky stuff.
Thanks

I am happy that BG is being released. I agree about PS:T. I think it is one of the best games out there. I am just worried that he won't be able to/want to follow the plot story (which is what makes that game so great).
The only thing I did not like about PS:T was the very ending. I expected something more.

Bit more for you to chew on about the game.

Wow. That looks great....... :yep:
Are there any similar games out there? I like that concept. :D :woot:

You may wish to avoid anything with Steam because you need to be online in order set up the game to be played in Offline mode. If you forget to set the game for Offline mode as you leave your current online session, you may not be able to do this until the next time you.
Yes, it sounds silly because it is. :rotfl2:

Confirming the fear factor of Amnesia. I never finished that game; too much time playing late at night and in the dark.

On second thought not niece-material. On third thought that might be too scary for ME.:huh:

I'm not the biggest consumer of scare games, but Dark Fall: The Journal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Fall) greatly impressed me with everything except its idiotic name. It's exactly as you described in the OP: no FPS stuff (there aren't any enemies and you can't, in fact, even die) and exploring a big hotel with a gripping backstory.
It's more about the whole atmosphere than quick scares, so there are no "boo a ghost behind the corner!" scenes either. The puzzles are usually logical and rely more on traditional problem solving (such as figuring out a secret message's code) than trying every item you find on every possible object in the world, hoping to guess what the developer wanted you to do.
I didn't get really far in the sequel, but it didn't seem bad either. I just wasn't in the mood after just finishing the first game.
Edit: remembered wrong, it was a hotel and not a mansion. Should start reading my own Wiki links :).

Yeah, it's, err, a spooky game alright. Play it in the dark with headphones one and you won't be going to sleep any time soon. I've never got very far into it - I actually find it a bit too much. :)
