View Full Version : Battle of Guadalcanal
Hello all I'm thinking of creating a new mission the battle of Guadacanal version 1.0 for playable ships only and version 1.1 for subs. Please provide feedback if you think that I should create this mission.I have all the historical evidence I need already.:salute:

From a submariner's point of view, the job is to position yourself in front of a speeding freight train and allow yourself to be run over night after night in hopes of getting a couple of lucky shots off at 30 know DDs that don't care about you in the least.
It's no glory assignment as six to eight DDs nighltly charge through the slot at 30 knots. If you're lucky  you'll be able to get in range to shoot a couple torpedoes. If you do, you just ran the dinner bell for three or four of them, who force you deep in a game for your life at no danger to them while the other 4 or 5 run away toward Guadalcanal. Once these guys have your respect they hit the jets and leave. By the time you regain the surface from 400' they're long gone at your speed plus 10 knots.
Then it's wait to be abused again the next night. No glory I'll tell you! But it will get you closer to God, either dead or alive.
And that's just with the scripting already in RSRD. I was shocked how realistic and how fatalistic the whole thing was. Hell, you think they send us all this good food for free? It better be good, every meal could easily be your last meal out there!
:arrgh!:

RSRD scripts it well for subs. I assume by the batte of GC, you're referring to really the battle of Savo and the different landings by IJN destroyers.
I don't mess with playable ships, but it's fun watching the surface ships go at it during Savo from the sub.
Well,it is going to be 100% historicaly accurate, cause I'm going to add a few more Kates armed with torpedoes in ship playable version. It needs a lot of skill to avoid a torpedo heading towards you with 30+ knots and about 10-30seconds to hit you.

Yes, I don't see anything that could improve on RSRD attempting to intercept the Tokyo Express in the Slot there. And since there were no other ships there how can you be "more accurate" by putting playable ships of both sides and fling in some Bettys there with torpedoes. It makes my brain hurt.

Depends of how you view the battle of GC. Historically, the battle of Savo took place during the battle of GC, as you know the IJN sunk many of our ships why the soldiers on GC watched, thus "Ironbottom Sound"... They did land troops with DD's and barges that week.
Course realistically the GC is part of the Solomon's campaign, many small and large naval battles all in RSRD... Seems his goal is playable ships, not the sub action in RSRD.

True. If he concentrated on action near Guadalcanal itself, instead of in the Slot, trying to intercept the Tokyo Express on the way there, he could introduce just about anything he wanted into the mix.
I've always wondered about playable ships in a sub sim. Seems like a disconnect when there are ship sims out there. Why force SH4 to be something it's not and ignore the sims that are? Are they that bad?

Why I've never had a desire to get into playable ships, seems arcardish and old, lacks all the game factors of a real surface game. But I do understand some enjoy just shooting crap with no real sim value.

The only human diveable vessel I have seen in Ironbottom Sound without rust on a portion of the wreck is the USS ATLANTA. A light anti-aircraft cruiser. Her funnels were fabricated of stainless steel-for a moment you see them in this video but you have to look quick to see a little shine under the sea growth. In fact USS ATLANTA is closer to shore then in the Sound proper.

There are no sunken Japanese or American carrier in Ironbottom Sound. In fact I don't think there is a single human diveable sunk heavy, medium, escort carrier from either side in the Pacific War in the Pacific Ocean. Except USS SARATOGA sunk off Bikini Atoll during the nuclear test right after the war.

I think IGD is referring to my not so famous incident in my first career, where I was a couple of months from actually surviving the war, when in the middle of Japanese waters I intercepted/was intercepted by a huge, rapidly moving convoy. I quickly set up a sonar only attack on the largest target I could find and sank.......the USS Essex. End of career! It's a vacation trip to Leavenworth for me. Do not collect medals. Do not pass go. Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Bust rocks.
But sometimes he assumes that what is memorable to one is memorable to all. Fittingly, it is not.:rotfl2:
JOHN, looking forward to what you come up with!

Here at ground zero (NYC), there is a dog run (a small, paved-over yard where Manhattanites excercise their canines) named Essex Park doggy run in memory of the infamous incident. The Freedom Tower tour guides recount the details of the sinking and its aftermath when they bring visitors to the park, and the story is part of tour lore, along with the Barbarinna's famous rescue of 200 bass fisherman from the promenade on the east river just as the towers fell (the later story flew under the radar.)
Time to visit my shrink. got to go.

I can see it now, The Essex Park Dog Run: a long concrete doggy run where the poodles (what other breed would you use in tribute to my feat) are walked in single file to the grass ring at the end. In the middle of the grass ring is a statue of a broken man holding a pick hopelessly staring at an impossible-sized rock. On command all the poodles are led to their spots in the ring and the command given, "POOP!!!"
I don't need to cover what they sell in the gift shop.
