The problem that I have with the Olympics is the same problem that I have with college football. That is, it has become the opposite of what it claims to be.

I remember seeing Michael Phelps win his 8th gold in Beijing live. Say what you will about the Olympics, but it inspired me to swim better.

The problem that I have with the Olympics is the same problem that I have with college football. That is, it has become the opposite of what it claims to be.

Unlike college football, olympic athletes are clearly pseudo amateur. They have sponsors and all that which allow them to train, usually on their own, or with a handful of coaches or teammates, and with little to no chance of making a career in their sport. Name 1 professional fencer, hell name 1 pro fencing league.

College football and basketball players are hand picked and brought into a sports machina that tries to churn out championships. Look at the penalty penn state just took. I believe, and correct me if im wrong, that is fairly close to Pittsburgh pirates payroll over similar time frames.

Comparing most Olympic athletes against big college sports is apples and oranges.

Edit: http://buccofans.wikispaces.com/Pirates+Payroll+History Ok it's close. But still proves my point, if a pro team and college team have that money to burn....

Which is exactly the image that the NCAA tries to project. The reality is quite different. Like Olympic athletes, players in the big name programs are granted full scholarships and do little more than train, practice and play the games on Saturdays. They are both student and amateur in name only, like their Olympic counterparts. And just like the false image that the Olympics tires to project of the everyman in competition for his nation, I find it repugnant.

EDIT:

Which is exactly like the gold medal machines that are US swimming, US gymnastics, US track and field, Team USA basketball (which is, unironically, completely populated by professional athletes), etc. Not to mention the gold medal count which practically starts every night's broadcast. Instead of a collegiate pissing contest, we are given an international pissing contest.

That's pretty cool. I remember back in Atlanta there was supposed to be some distant cousin of mine competing in one of the shooting events; whether archery or rifle and which event therein I have no idea. Of course, my mother also claimed that we were distantly related to former NFL quarterback Bubby Brister, so take all of this with a grain of salt.

Just one question
What as that tosser Beckham have to do with the Olympics ?

And am going stick my neck out here and say that GB will win 30 gold medals :hmmm:

Jimbuna

Cycling will probably be GB's most successful area but the number of medals up for grabs is fewer (not sure by how many) than the last olympics because of a rescheduling/restructure of the sport.

I'm finding it ok, I've not watched the news for a few nights and I've picked my viewing choices wisely - the only remotely Olympic things I've watched are:

2012 - a comedy about the Olympic Deliverance Committee in the run-up to the games in a mockumentary style. :har:

Ab Fab Olympic Special. :har:

Victoria Pendleton: Cycling's Golden Girl - documentary about Victoria Pendleton, for those who don't know her -

She does scrub up well.

Aside from those, I really can't be bothered other than to watch my former colleague Pam Grainger in the Paralympic pistol shooting. :yeah:

What were they thinking? Pretty dancers and awesome fireworks last time around and 'we' come up with that? :har: or :wah: All that's missing is Frodo and Friends.

I will be selectively viewing the events that interest me on the BBC iSport player. At all other times the TV will be tuned to something interesting.

Interest: zero. Olympic spirit and ideals: zero. Advertizing: maximum. Financial benefits for the host: extremely deficitary at every Olympic event since Munich 72 (I saw a docu on TV some time ago where they calculated costs versus economic benefits for all summer and winter Games since 72, and they were always left with deficitary balances which seem to fall deeper into the red numbers with every event following). Compensation due to infrastructure built for the event: insufficient.

Panem et circensis. Olympia has little to do with it. Britons may want to riot and hang their government for having increased their debts by bringing the games to London. I for myself am happy that Munich and Berlin have lost their recent candidacies. Berlin and Olympics? Read about how the left senate have messed up the - megalomaniac but headless - airport project at Berlin Schönefeld, and you know how well-suited this senate would have been with the organisaiton of such an event. Economic corruption and political and administrational incompetence rank very high in Berlin.

Last Olympics I followed with interest and enthusiasm, was LA 84.

I'd like to watch it but I can't stand the TV coverage in the US. It's only about the winners, their families, their dogs, their girlfriends, their etc. I want to see more actual competition not another reality show travel documentary with an occasional final event.

Last time we had an alternate channel that showed competition late at night you could at least record and watch at a different time. Can't find that now.

I just realised that none of the German major TV stations do any coverage at all. It is only on Eurosports.

Not that I complain, not at all. I hate the TV taxes being wasted by monumental sums being payed for such broadcasting rights. It is just strange, becasue suually right this is what happens. Football championships and Olympic games, even other world championchips from sports usually get broadcasted by first and second state TV programs, all day long.

And while typing this, I note that even in the internet media there is little coverage. I was not even aware that the games already had begun. Was there no opening ceremony? There was some fighting over the IOC not allowing rememberance of the assassination of the Israeli team 40 years ago, this was reported. And that was all.

Lucky you, we're probably not going to be able to move for the stuff. Thank God we have Sky, they can't put the Olympics on EVERY channel, can they?

I'll probably watch the opening on the BBCs website, and might listen to some of the events on Radio Five Live, but I'm not that hyped about it if I'm honest (like about 40-60% of the country I'd wager :haha:) and I'm more interested to see what kind of chaos it creates in the capital, and I have no doubt that we'll be treated to delicious descriptions of transport chaos and that.

This thread, made me remember an idea I had or have, I haven't forgot it as so.

The idea came from a newsbulletin on the swedish radio and the discussion after.

The swedish government had approved additional 200 million Skr to the swedish SOC for their ongoing attempt to get the winter olympics to Åre

Even thou they used some fine words, every one knew that those 200 million was to be used as bribery.

I even send an email to the swedish SOC and the danish DOC and told them about my idea-Funny I didn't get any response whatsoever.

If they should have taken my idea into use, they would have been without job.

One of the problems I have with the Olympics is the crappy coverage we get here in the United States.

They seem focused on only sports where the US is participating and of those, the most coverage is on the sports the US is expected to win medals.

There is a lot more to the Olympics then just watching pro-US events.

It has been decades since I have been able to watch the Judo or fencing stuff.

I have over 1900 channels on my cable, I would gladly pay more if they would just add a few simultaneous channels covering more of the sports.

But then once they added Beach Volleyball as an Olympic sport.....

:/\\!! I agree.
Soon they are adding golf. Will Tiger Woods be allowed to compete???? If Kobe Bryant is eligible then why not? It feels tainted.

Personally, I like the Olympics but I am fussy what events I will watch. Track and field, wrestling, men's gymnastics. If they have a channel covering those I will watch those events.

My Brother lives right next to Olympic village, about 2 months ago it became a requirement to present ID to less than pleasent armed security personel each time he enters his building, needless to say has sublet his flat and gotten the hell out of there until its over.
Our noisey over croweded city is even noiser and over crowed, the bad traffic is now impossible traffic. Police are every where and they are not in a very good mood, since they had all their leave suspended.
I cant wait until its over and Im glad im off to spain in a weeks time.

Ive yet you meet another Londoner who is 'happy' about us hosting the Olympics. Its a royal pain in the backside when you live in the middle of it.
I hope to god nothing bad happens tomorrow or i can see this entire city being on military lock down for weeks to come.

Aye, I've heard similar things, so far the ZiL lanes seem to be not causing as much of a nightmare as expected although it's a bad time to be a cabbie or bus driver in London. With any luck most people will have gotten out of the city or will just stay at home over the coming days.

It's coming up for a year since the Riots though...and the problems which sparked them have not been addressed or even looked at...

Time will tell....

Whether we agree or disagree about the nature of the athletic competition, I think that most of us can come together in the recognition that the opening and closing ceremonies are always incredibly painful affairs. Been quite impressed so far if I'm honest. Loved the Industrial revolution, with the chimneys rising from the ground and stripping away the countryside. Needed a bit more railway though, they missed out one of our big contributions to the world.
Nice nod to the inventor of the internet too, as well as Brunel, and a guest appearance by Lizzie herself. Very nicely done in my opinion, now there's just the mystery of who will light the torch.

It's got to be David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor or there'll be a giant gaping hole in the space-time continuum, not to mention several hundred thousand disappointed fans. :O:

Just turned it on, the part where the kids are falling asleep, and then there's all these monsters chasin them or something.

A giant wtf from me.

Having just finished reading the hunger games series, haven't seen the movie, I was instantly struck by the similarities between the two. I can see the olympics reaching that point some day, in the very very distant future. (as described in the books).

Multiple districts forced to send multiple athletes to a central location for death sport, all driven by over done pageantry.

07-27-12, 08:01 PM
My favourite part of the whole thing was the section entitled 'Pandemonium', the coming of the Industrial Era, the tearing up of the green and pleasant countryside, the chimneys rising from the ground, the suffragettes, Brunel played quite well by Kenneth Branagh. I was skeptical at first, but it won me over, the raw power behind it. The highlight of the whole show for me if I'm honest, although I still think that somewhere in there a railway locomotive should have been portrayed to highlight the birth of railways which drove the spread of the Industrial revolution at a speed which no other form of transport at the time could match.
It was very well made, and very well performed, in both music, choreography, props and special effects.

I was right(Sort of) :)

Yesterday danish TV2Sport asked on Facebook, if we could guess who's gonna light the olympic torch

I wrote

Up til the second were the torch is to be lighted, it is always a secret how it will be done and by whom

If I was the one that should arrange such a ceremony, I would take an ordinary person from the street and let this person egnite the torch, just to take everyone by big surprice.

about 30 minutes later 6 young people, unknown to us all, lighted the torch.

Well, don't underestimate either of those two! Kazakhstan inherited a very good sports infrastructure and tradition from the Soviet era, and there's certain sports they've always excelled at. North Korea is just hardcore - but with the state throwing everything into (rather forceful) selection and training of athletes, you're bound to get results. I suspect they spend disproportionately more on sport than the UK does.

As an ex high school swimmer, I could not imagine looking over into lane 3 and seeing the Olympic champion about to kick my ass. She could drop a new Wold record in any high school meet! Unlikely though, given the way training regiments taper towers the end of season big meets, or in her case, Olympics. Either way, she's got to own most of the state high school records.

:D 36 or 38 races in a row they are undefeated now, since the Olympics 2008. This record impresses me more than the win now. A single win means a good day. And there is number 5 going to Nathan Outteridge & Iain Jensen at Weymouth.

Lets just put it down to 'late starters' :03:

GB womens hockey were beaten 2-1 in the semi final by Argentina and no further golds today...for a change :/\\!!

Maybe it's me, but in the US, NBC's Primetime coverage should be titled "NBC Primetime Women's Beach Volleyball with Misty and Carrie". It seems that is all they've been showing.

I didn't even realize the "other" US women's team made it to the final round for a US vs US match for the gold. I don't even remember seeing the other US team play.

I guess bikinis=ratings=$$$$$.

Let's go Dave and Matt!

If you're unfamiliar with wrestling or the players. at 55kg, look out for the wrestlers from Russia, Iran, NK and Japan. At 74kg, take a look at the world Champion from the US, 3x World Champion from Russia, Canada and Iran.

http://www.torontosun.com/2012/08/11/canada-no-stranger-to-summer-olympic-heartbreak

Wow. Every one in this province, Prince Edward Island, is in shock today after last nights 4 x 100 relay disaster. Jared Connaughton, the runner who was disqualified is a local boy. He's from Cornwall, a town about ten kilometres from here. His dad and I actually worked at the same company for a time during the last Olympics. No one has worked harder to win an Olympic medal than this guy. I feel really bad for him and his family.

After a moment of joy, this. Tough break.

As a skeptic who believed that we couldn't host a decent games to save our lives, I have to admit that I was absolutely one hundred percent utterly and completely wrong. I may not have watched any of the events (not a sporting man) but the atmosphere was good, people enjoyed themselves, there were no riots, only 250 arrests (which is pretty good considering the amount of people there have been in the area) the transport system didn't collapse, no-one went on strike, and the only real technical problems was down to Boris being Boris and getting stuck on a zip-line.
I didn't think we could do it, and I know I wasn't alone, I think the world didn't think we could do it...but we did.
It's your turn now Brazil, and I'm sure you'll put on a show every bit as good as ours, and that of Chinas before it. Remember, it's not what you have, it's what you do with it.
Thank you all for coming to the UK, for enjoying the games, for taking part in the games, and I hope that everyone involved had a good time.

Now, for the Paralympics!

Well done poms. Not only a well organised and well run games, but also a great effort in the competitions. The games have definitely been a boost for morale and national pride and rightly so.

I think everyone goes into these things with trepidation thinking how could this possibly not go wrong, we did 12 years ago in Sydney and then it turns out all right on the night and everyone gets behind the games and somehow it all runs smoothly.

Highlight for me was Eric Idle singing "Always look on the light side of life"

The Olympics are over? No, not really :)

The funniest thing is the fact that she was already banned for taking different stuff in the past.

For all those who so optimistically announced the Olympics to have been "successful", well, definitely they were successful in the organizational sense (security etc) but in the sport dimension I wouldn't call them 100% successful.
If you had watched it, you would know that several competitions ended with some scandalous decisions, to name a few: men's judo, men&women's weightlifting, women's fencing, men's swimming and last but not least - women's hammer throw 3 days ago.

The wife and daughter (Uni studies allowing) work for M&S who are one of the Paralympics sponsors.

Each store can send two staff to see an event and the daughters name came out of the hat.

So she and her mother are going to watch the Equestrian (I think) event later this month.
