View Full Version : A plea for people to stop quoting entire posts, especially image loaded ones
Not sure where else to post this, so I put it here.
Like no other forum I frequent, I see people here quoting ENTIRE posts, especially posts full of images, just to say "good work" or some other inane crap. I have no idea why it happens more here than other places I go, but it does. It is really really really annoying.
Please, for the love of all that's holy, please stop that.
It is extremely annoying. I can't be the only one that feels that way. We can all see the originally posted images. There is absolutely NO REASON to make a post with all those images quoted within it. Why? WHY WHY WHY!!?? Do you REALLY think that's a good idea?
Any chance the moderators could put a cap on this practice?

I agree with you. I also mention it every time I see it done. It wastes bandwidth and is a real pain for anyone whose connection is less that perfect.
On the other hand there is no need to be upset because a couple of people are having fun with you.
I understand and sympathize with the OP on this issue. It's why I'll usually pick out a sentence or two and just quote that. Unfortunately it sometimes leads to accusations that I am ignoring other points the author made but that charge is mainly leveled by those who feel it's ok to make book length posts (mentioning no names)...

Back along there was a Moderator that would tidy up and prevent this issue.
In fact, I believe that image quotation spamming may have been against the rules at one time (not sure about now), when Neal was on a limited server capacity.
It's basically bad forum etiquette to quote large posts for the sake of a minimal reply but in the absence of a section moderator to correct this at the time, the community has to self regulate.
Perhaps there's a vBulletin script to combat this? Perhaps making images un-quotable or, as I have seen in other forums, images must be placed in a 'spoiler' bar. The result of which means that if images are quoted, they must be expanded to view them, giving everyone the choice.
Sailer Steve, you are of course right. No need to get worked up over those two needling me. .... Except that I'm already pretty irritable today, and their posts were particularly needless. I try to remain non-abrasive here, but when people do that to me it makes it difficult.
I can understand not infracting people for this I guess. But encouraging people to stop it would really really be nice.
I'm often tempted to say something when I see people do it, but that would be as useless and wasteful (IMHO) as the people that are doing it.
And, IMHO, if people are going to "call you" on not addressing all points, to me that pretty much means they don't really have a valid point to begin with. :stare:
It wastes bandwidth and is a real pain for anyone whose connection is less that perfect.
Quite sure that images (among other things) are stored in the temp cache, so
once you see an image, the next time you see the same one it just gets pulled
from the cache instead of loading it again. :hmmm:
But, I do agree with the OP. It's annoying. I've seen a great feature on few other
boards I visit which hides the quoted image under a "Show Image" button,
might be a good option if it's possible. :yep:

It does not waste bandwith, the image is loaded once from the location it is stored, then it is displayed from the cache in multiple locations. At least thats how every browser worth using does it.
Anyway, while the issue does not annoy me the easiest way to deal with it would be to modify the quote feature to hide images in quotes behind a clickable text thingy like it is done on several forums I use.
Edit: Dowly and I share a single, fairly useless, brain, apparently.

There was never a moderator that infracted people over this matter. Also, it is not the duty of a moderator to clean up people's formatting. We are not forum garbagemen, and I do not see this 'problem' as a major issue at all. Certainly not one worth moderating.
ok. wow.
judging from this thread alone, apparently people here just have a VASTLY greater tendency to quote posts than at any other forum I frequent.
frankly, I do NOT understand that habit. at all. if you have a specific point to make about something specific someone said, fine, quote it and reply.

I didn't mention infractions or warnings but Gizmo did go around removing/deleting and resizing images. I doubt he did it out of duty but rather care for the community and it's members. Dig deep enough into the archive and you could probably find old posts of his about this matter.
In what respect do you consider "this 'problem' as a non-issue"? As a member of Subsim you should be concerned that certain aspects are troublesome or irritating to other community members. That comment just smacks of a "I'm alright Jack, sod you" attitude.

A quote is used to give context to your own content. For example, my response in post No. 13 is in reference to Danlisa's content in post No. 9. Including his content makes it impossible to mistake to whom my comments were directed, and to what content they entailed. It is an effective method of communication, and one that I have no intention of changing. I am sorry that you disapprove.

This is required and the OP did not communicate his dislike of this method of quoting effectively.
Takeda is correct, without this type of post quoting, threads would become chaotic and impossible to follow logically. Misunderstandings would occur too readily further escalating already heated General Topic discussions.:arrgh!:
Problems do arise when posters 'ninja edit' their comments while people are quoting them. ;)
i understand context. that's fine.
for instance, to quote my entire post is pointless. the only thing that really needed to be quoted for these posts was the very last line, not the entire post. it's fair to say we've all already read the whole thread, so what's the point of repeatedly quoting what's already been said.
I mean, SERIOUSLY, my last post has already been quoted, IN ENTIRETY, three fricken times now already. in less than half-an-hour.
tell me honestly that that isn't utterly pointless. :/\\!!

Or maybe that part of my job is to save the community from overregulation. We already regulate signature size, use of asteriks, image size and a variety of other trivial items. The last thing we need is more petty rules. People already practically need a manual in order to post here.

I have not suggested that any moderator should undertake supervision of image quotations, merely I stated that one moderator used to.
Forum software/script can accomplish this automatically, it just requires investigation and implementation if it's decided that it benefits the community members.

....hornets nest.
For someone new to Gen Topics, you catch on fast.:har:
... and yes, it is almost as annoying when people do it with smaller posts too. seriously, whats the point of that?
how about we completely remove the quote button so people acutally have to copy>paste to quote ... err .. nope, wouldn't work. they'd just copy>paste entire posts.
how about limiting the quote button to maybe 5 lines? that should cover pretty much any legitimate need to quote.
quoting for the sake of quoting is lame and needs to stop. :shifty:

It's a red rag to a bull, like a thread with "Edit: Please don't post" or "Nothing to see here" in the title. Like Dowly said though, it's better than it once was when not only the quote of the person you quoted appeared but the quotes of the people they quoted and so on and so forth until it looked like something out of a magic eye picture or the Twilight Zone.
EDIT: Furthermore, you've got to bear in mind that only a small fraction of Subsims huge member base actually come into GT, it is, as they say "you'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy", and many stay in their respective forums, such as the Silent Hunter V forum, Silent Hunter III forum, and so on. So really if you want to make this plea, you should find the sub-forum (pardon the pun) it happens the most in and try there. Alternatively, if you want to put it to the moderators that it be policed then try the Comments to Subsim section, or PMing the moderators.

A reply to button on each post would accomplish the same thing.
In the responders post there would be a statement "In reply to artao" with a link back to the replied to post.
@danlisa: oh, i'm not new to this TYPE of forum. that's largely why i don't come in here. these types (open general topic) are almost invariably full of flamewars and usually pointless drivel.
i dunno, maybe i shoulda actually put this in the Comments to SUBSIM Review forum.
if any moderator cares to move this thread over there, that may end up in a far more productive thread. :hmmm:

There is almost never any need to quote someone else's post in full. As a matter of fact, full-quoting is usually considered quite rude, for doing so shows a studied lack of consideration on the part of the poster for their readers. While it's probably not the intent, full-quoting in essence says to the reader, "You are not important enough to me for me to bother trimming out these screenfulls of quoted text. You will just have to wade through them."

I don't see GT being all that bad when you consider some other communities I've frequented online. In fact, the moderators section is pretty quiet lately and that can only be testimony to the community as a whole and to a slightly lesser degree on the moderating team.
The whole forum is obviously monitored continuously around the clock with due diligence by Neal or one or more of the team but in saying that, in as low a key and with as lightly an approach wherever and whenever possible.
I personally believe that it is enough that we already deal with the like of spambots (nuked my latest one only yesterday), flame wars, and illegal links without adding quotes to the list.
Good governance and common sense amongst other things are key to a healthy internet community and I honestly believe that is what we have here on SubSim.

There was never a moderator that infracted people over this matter. Also, it is not the duty of a moderator to clean up people's formatting. We are not forum garbagemen, and I do not see this 'problem' as a major issue at all. Certainly not one worth moderating.
ok. wow.
judging from this thread alone, apparently people here just have a VASTLY greater tendency to quote posts than at any other forum I frequent.
frankly, I do NOT understand that habit. at all. if you have a specific point to make about something specific someone said, fine, quote it and reply.
seriously? what's with all the post quoting people do here?
I didn't mention infractions or warnings but Gizmo did go around removing/deleting and resizing images. I doubt he did it out of duty but rather care for the community and it's members. Dig deep enough into the archive and you could probably find old posts of his about this matter.
In what respect do you consider "this 'problem' as a non-issue"? As a member of Subsim you should be concerned that certain aspects are troublesome or irritating to other community members. That comment just smacks of a "I'm alright Jack, sod you" attitude.
Err.. so, you got a problem with people quoting smaller posts too? I can understand
quoting 50 images or Skybird's posts being annoying, but is it really that bad
with these smaller posts?
At least we got rid of the quote-in-quote-in-quote-in-quote feature. :O:
Because context is important.
STOP FOLLOWING ME!
However as for matters of netiquette.
In regards to the ENTIRE, WHY WHY WHY!!??
Do you REALLY not understand CAPSLOCK IS ...Seriously!!! Fricken LAME!!! and There is absolutely NO REASON
YOU ARE FOLLOWING ME, BUT STAYING IN FRONT!
This is required and the OP did not communicate his dislike of this method of quoting effectively.
Takeda is correct, without this type of post quoting, threads would become chaotic and impossible to follow logically. Misunderstandings would occur too readily further escalating already heated General Topic discussions.:arrgh!:
Problems do arise when posters 'ninja edit' their comments while people are quoting them.
i understand context. that's fine.
for instance, to quote my entire post is pointless. the only thing that really needed to be quoted for these posts was the very last line, not the entire post. it's fair to say we've all already read the whole thread, so what's the point of repeatedly quoting what's already been said.
I mean, SERIOUSLY, my last post has already been quoted, IN ENTIRETY, three fricken times now already. in less than half-an-hour.
tell me honestly that that isn't utterly pointless.
Yeah, I guess that I just don't care about the community.
Or maybe that part of my job is to save the community from overregulation. We already regulate signature size, use of asteriks, image size and a variety of other trivial items. The last thing we need is more petty rules. People already practically need a manual in order to post here.
Try not to take life so seriously, no one gets out alive anyway.
@tribesman, caps lock is fine when used in moderation. it's only bad nettiquette when entire posts are all caps. :D
Calm down, obviously you don't come into GT very often.
It's annoying, yes, but it's not something I see the mods clamping down on, not when there's things like spambots, flame wars, and illegal links to deal with first.
Oh god, do you remember when we almost broke the forum with the quote-within-a-quote thread?
truth be told, i am rather irritable today. however, it was really really irritating to come in here and see the first two responses to my post were exactly what I was requesting be stopped. completely uncalled for.
and no. i do not come into GT. ever. however, this was the proper place to put this thread, so i did.
apparently i've poked a hornets nest.
Yeah, you have to to take this lot on daily. In fairness though, you edited your post. As such the edit results in a different interpretation.
I have not suggested that any moderator should undertake supervision of image quotations, merely I stated that one moderator used to.
Forum software/script can accomplish this automatically, it just requires investigation and implementation if it's decided that it benefits the community members.
For someone new to Gen Topics, you catch on fast.
... and yes, it is almost as annoying when people do it with smaller posts too. seriously, whats the point of that?
how about we completely remove the quote button so people acutally have to copy>paste to quote ... err .. nope, wouldn't work. they'd just copy>paste entire posts.
how about limiting the quote button to maybe 5 lines? that should cover pretty much any legitimate need to quote.
quoting for the sake of quoting is lame and needs to stop.
@Oberon: i dunno mate. when i see a big red button with a sign saying, "Don't Push" .. I don't push the button.
Touché, but some of us never grew up :03:
So that doesn't work.
Then we might as well remove members rights to post at all...and while we're at it we might just shut down the forum.
because if it can't be quoted people simply copy and paste it into the post which as you said above is just as annoying.
HunterICX
Sorry chaps but this has to be said. With all the trouble in the world ATM does it really make a difference? Lighten up chaps forsooths sake!
ok. clearly i made an error in judgement.
i am now BEGGING a moderator to move this post over to Comments to SUBSIM please.
The exact same conversation will be taking place over in the comments section. It's the content, not the location.
But how will you know what I was referring to in my reply? The way some of these threads go, two or three other people will have submitted replies by the time I submit mine and then it's hard to follow.
I do agree that quoting huge images for no good reason is in bad form. I don't do it, but I never noticed a big problem with it. Certainly not big enough of a problem to get one's jimmies all rustled over it.
Relax, we are just taking the piss for the most part, a bit of tongue-in-cheek.
Agree with the OP. Plus, large quotes often keep me from reading anything else in the post.
I and many others of the hive resent/resemble/retort your insinuation Sir.
GT is rough and tumble by SubSim standards, but if you have been around the web at all, you'll find that it is very mild by global standards.
the GT is a paradise compared to from what I've seen on other forum boards.
Either one where the language filter just collapses under the amount of foul mouths or moderators that are triggerhappy and pretty much have banned as much as legit members as we have Spambots (I think I believe it where Spambots

On the other hand I once quoted only the part of a post I wished to address, and the OP demanded that I stop "cherry-picking" his posts. Sometimes you just can't win.
I, on the other hand, am likely to post a sign under it that says "Why not?" :O:
http://www.river.com/users/share/etiquette/
And why not? I had to wade through them the first time. Just because I read through it doesn't mean that I'm going to do everyone else's work for them. You all must suffer through it as I did.

On the OP get a life mate. Quoting is part of posting and TBH doesn't cause the vast majority of users a problem. I agree with you on the large picture quoting as that's just plain silly, but otherwise there are beer and girlies to ogle so go do that if quoting gives you the squirts so much.:salute:

With only my phone for access these days, it's a real pain to edit a quoted post.
Quoting is a way to point my response at a specific post.
And as dowly mentioned, pictures are cached. So you only download them once.
Five pages of discussion on quoting length. I now believe that there is absolutely nothing we can't argue about. :)

You know when you take two cell phones and place them face to face and the voice echos forever? That is what it looks like in quoted writing.

Quoting, the old-school style. :haha:
And then Anno Domini two of thousands and twelwe, during the reign of king Neal I The Wise in the county of Subsim's hamlet General Topics did Dowly of Finland from the Ferret's family thus declare: "Quoting, the old-school style" and bound an evil spirit to make small yellow man laugh in most devilish way and thus was he weighed with a duck and burned as a practisioner of black magic and worshiper of our savior's enemy the Lucifer.
Scribed with own hand:
