An American Navy ship fired on a boat in the Persian Gulf today, killing one person and injuring three others aboard the craft, a U.S. naval official told ABC News.
A spokesperson for the Navy's 5th Fleet, which is based in nearby Bahrain, said that a security team aboard the oil supply ship U.S.N.S. Rappahannock fired a .50 caliber machine gun at a "small motor vessel after it disregarded warnings and rapidly approached the U.S. ship" off the coast of Jebel Ali, a city approximately 30 miles from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

They should have known that after about 1941 merchants have guns on them, always attack submerged! :nope:

If I remember, ABC radio(?) said this morning that they weren't Iranians and that it was a civilian boat.
I guess they forgot about pirates.:dead:

I have a buddy that was in the Coast Guard he did a lot of drug interdiction work .
Pretty much if the suspect vessel appears to be a civilian vessel they must give numerous warnings first with a loud PA they will tell them to stop/sail away what ever depending on the situation in drug interdiction they would be of course wanting the vessel to stop same if they are checking a suspected pirate vessel if they fail to obey the orders which off the coast of Florida will usually be in both English and Spanish.
The next step is to use anything nonlethal if they have anything one of those LRAD things which if that does not stop you you are hella determined the USNS may not have had a non lethal option many naval vessels do not have one that could keep a bomb laden vessel far enough at bay next you will fire a weapon usually a .50 caliber or a 25mm cannon or a 7.62mm MG so that it splashes rounds about 100 feet or so in front of the bow (that had better convince you) if that fails they can pretty much use force. They normally do this a few times it might also come from a helo door gun that is more popular as a smaller CG or Navy boat it can be hard to control the rounds that well on the open sea something as large as the Rappahannock would be fairly stable platform for a 50. caliber though.
In the drug interdiction case they then disable the suspect vessels engines and then board it before the crew can sink the thing. In the case where they are not looking to inspect then it would be assumed that the vessel is hostile and they are not going to be concerned about trying to board it so much as destroy it.
Who knows what the crew of the small vessel really intended one thing for sure the surviving members will be much more careful next time.
