View Full Version : Blew Ballast at 200 meters, ship crushed. What happened?

My ship had gone down to 200m after an engagement with a destroyer. I decided to dive to avoid any other contacts. My sub didnt stop diving and we got down to 200m. I eventually decided to blow the ballast and my ship got to about 150m and then everything broke and we died. What happened?

nothing, your hull just failed from the stress and damage on it. the deeper you go the more damage to your hull from pressure.
you may not have survived even if you tried to surface ealier, its just one of those things where you got to the point of no return from damage and your time ran out.
its a bad thing in the game many people wish was different. it sure would be better to see the sub interior with water rushing in and men screaming just before it happens so you know what happened but instead we get the stale spinning view and are left wondering exactly what happened

Well thats pretty much what happened actually. I have seen the gauges burst before but this time ALL of them bursted THEN it went to the spinning camera. So water sort of rushed in but i was wondering why it happened, thanx i understand now :)

The Silent Hunter stock damage model uses hull integrity as a direct translation to true crush depth. Once below that point, not only does the boat begin taking damage, but true crush depth becomes more shallow. Particular to SH5 is the fact that true crush depth is set shallower than actual historical records to justify the stupid "Increase Crush Depth" skill for the Navigator. In stock SH5, all boats begin taking damage between 176-185 meters and WILL crush at 200 meters. This is one of countless flaws in this game. There are many mods that fix this issue and restore historical crush depths. Unless your boat is already damaged, 200 meters should not be an issue for any Type VII beyond a lot of grunting and groaning from the steel.

TDW's UI patch is one of the major fixes.
