President Barack Obama is considered by some to be the nation's first black president - but Morgan Freeman isn't one such individual.
The actor told NPR's "Tell Me More" host Michel Martin in an interview posted Thursday that "the first thing" that he thinks of when he thinks of Obama is "all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him," Morgan said.

"They just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white - very white American, Kansas, middle America," the Oscar winner continued. "There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president - he's America's first mixed-race president."

:O: Facts!

That's interesting stuff. My question is, why not sooner? I wish it wouldn't have taken this long for a mixed race president to be elected. I mean, I see what's going on with the Zimmerman trial and what not. All the riots. I really hate how race is such a big issue in this country. We're supposed to be a melting pot, right? We're American's, plain and simple. We're not African-Americans, Asian-American's, Arab-Americans, etc, etc. We're Americans. I hope there comes a time when color isn't an issue, doesn't even get brought up. A time where we are simply, well, Americans. :)

Why does race matter at all?

It doesn't.

Shame on anybody who thinks otherwise.

White racists used to say that if you had one drop of black blood in you, you were black, period. Now they say he's okay because he's not "all black". Most of us have some mixture or another in us. If the criterion is "how much", then I'm not "all white".

People who hate Obama look at his skin and see black. People who love Obama look at his skin and see black. I think the whole "mixed race" think is just another reason to either defend the man or dismiss him. I also think it's more than a little lame.

A black fella I once worked with in the 60s said to me "Pete, I treat each man as I find him" I never forgot that little gem and still use it.

Sound advice that. :yep:

The current evidence* suggests that we all came out of Africa ~60,000 years ago, from where we'd (they'd) been living for ~140,000 years previously.

So we are all black. :)

So why do I have such a small . . . ?

(Just kidding, all my ex's have called me Herr-Dong)

Morgan Freeman agrees with me too. I told four years ago Obama is a white culture mulatto.

I think mixed race describes most African-Americans including Morgan Freeman.

I don't know about all of that, but I do know I'd like to have Morgan Freeman narrate my day to day life. It would sound awesome.

I don't think petty things like race really means much when the Aliens invade.

A good point. Also race is irrelevant when it comes to the love of a dog. He doesn't care what his person looks like. :sunny:

Virginia used to have a law on the books that said that anyone with any black ancestors, no matter how few or far back, was considered black.

Then again have you ever seen the Borg assimilate someone who wasn't white? (Aliens don't count).

:up::up::up: That would be awesome...

"Subsim, it began one evening with a bored chemical plant operator and some pictures of the USS Cavalla..."

Someone needs to create a program that would make any narration typed voiced by Morgan Freeman.

Yeah, that seems pretty narrow-minded to me. I think the intent of that thinking was "if you are not 100% white, we lump you in with the blacks".

Anyway, I really do not care what Obama's parentage is in regards to his doing the job of President, I just object to the celebrations that he is the first "black"President, when he is just as much white as he is black. It's not factual or accurate.

And the white guy in me is proud of President Obama for delivering the goods to Osama Bin Laden. :)

Sadly mine does.

She was a rescue and her reaction to blacks leads us to believe she was abused by one as a puppy.

It doesn't have to be factual or accurate. Calling someone white or black (or brown or red or yellow or any other color) has nothing to do with traceable bloodlines. it has to do with observable color. Without knowing anything else just one look would tell you that Barack Obama is indeed black. If he was just another person you saw on the street you wouldn't make that distinction at all. As they used to say, "what you see is what you get."
