I'm at a point where I ant to expand from the stock experience of SHIII. I see there are a couple of mod systems to choose from and want some opinions on either.
Thanks

LSH does the most to expand the graphics and the feel of the game.
NYGM does the most to expand AI and gameplay.
GWX does the most to strike a balance between the two.

Thank you Steve, that helps in understanding the major direction each platform favors.
Just need to think about which direction I want to follow :salute:

Glad I could help. Remember though, those are just my personal takes. I've played NYGM and GWX, but my old old old computer won't run LSH3 or WAC. A little too much graphics for the old girl.
I play GWX loaded up with a host of other mods.
Whatever you finally choose, you might want to take a look at SH3 Commander. It doesn't affect the supermods, but changes the campaign dramatically, with detailed background for your captain, complete management for the crew and the added plus of giving every ship you sink a name, plus cargo and crew details.

Now that's a helpful comment! As each supermod comes with a huge documentation, it is hard to see in one glance what trade-off each one makes.
I'm coming back to SH3, not having played it since... 2006! At that time there were no supermod. I was very surprised to see how active the modding had been since then.
The first thing I found (because it was the first thread in the forum) was LSH3 5.1, which I have installed and run very smoothly. It really looks like a new game and I was impressed. I was half expecting to be disappointed by old graphics, like with Jane's 688(i).
Back in 2006, I was enjoying a lot a series of mods that had been bundled into what was called "realism pack" or something like that. It was what was the most hardcore at that time.
So, now, according to your explanation, I think I should go for NYGM...

NYGM was developed from that pack, I think. You should also pick h.sie's v16 and Stiebler's 4c for added difficulty and restrictions on the things the boat will be able to do. Rudewarrior's Just Follow Orders mod will be nice too, adding difficulty as that gives you the sometimes hard to follow orders that BdU gave the real U-boats.

I didn't mention WAC, which does the most to add real-life events (hence the name War Ace Campaign).
So, now, according to your explanation, I think I should go for NYGM... Good choice. But then, they all are. :sunny:

I believe NYGM started life as an extension of Beery's Real U-Boat, the first supermod for SHIII.

And don't forget SH3 Commander. It's more than a mod, and does for your career what all the others do for your game. It's the ultimate must-have.
