Perhaps that's because they're too busy celebrating Independence Day to celebrate Inependence Day as well?

Sorry, but Steve wasn't here so someone had to do it...

When I was a kid growing up in Redondo Beach, California, we used to go down to the beach on the 4th. There would be thousands of families there, all with fireworks, and then there were two big public fireworks displays, one nearby at the Palos Verdes hills and one twenty miles away at Malibu. It was a great memory.

Perhaps that's because they're too busy celebrating Independence Day to celebrate Inependence Day as well?
Makes perfect sense to me.

I sorry to burst your bubble, I'm not e fil i ate ed to any party, maybe I'm with the tea party, but I haven't signed any papers yet, so everyday is a fight against tyrrany, a patriot never takes a day off, of shed-ing light on the evil doings of the left, like fast furious, Obama care, and little Miss Hiliary's traitorious acts with the UN to broker a small arms treaty to strip the 2nd amendment from us. Evil doesn't take a day off and neither do I.

:nope:

Battle of Vicksburg On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.

Happy Declaration of Independence Day to our Southern Neighbour. :woot:

Found out a few years back that I am one of the many descendants of John Charles Carroll of Carollton, one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, representing the State of Virginia (my father's mother was a Carroll), so I guess I am at least part American...:D

You are correct on the dates:

July 1 North end of the battlefield
July 2 Lil Round Top, Culp's Hill
July 3 Pickett's Charge

Madox58
07-04-12, 03:48 PM
Both armies, exhausted, held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew.

No battles were fought on the 4th at Gettysburg, maybe a few rifle exchages but nothing worth note. Vicksburg fell which Lee had no knowledge of until days later.
Union forces may have been broken had an attack been possible by Lee on the 4th.

It's all speculation now days.

Thanks for all the warm wishes from you guys around the globe. I had to laugh today. Was thinking about what went on back in the revolutionary war. We call today Independence day. Dad and I were listening to a speech from Winston Churchill, his famous We Will Fight Them on the Beaches speech. He mentioned in one line, our colonies in the west... Had to chuckle. Thank you folks, especially our brethren in the UK, for the wonderful 4th wishes.

Thanks everyone, I had a blast doing it. My Father in Law kept me supplied in beer and we watched Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan while adding chips from time to time. Dinnertime, my in-laws went crazy saying how good it was and my Mother in Law said she was going to hand me a blank check for the holidays.

I had told my Father in Law that smoking was like a Zen experience, the smell of the wood, meat and relaxing in front of a smoker with a beer or five. He sat with me and we watched Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan while adding chips. He's became a believer.

Sitting outside watching the fireworks while eating BBQ, Potato Salad, Baked beans, Mac and Cheese, Cole Slaw, and Banana Pudding with family, it was a great 4th.
