Depth Charge Sink Rates

I only dive to 70 meters. Even at the faster late-war sink rate it still takes a depth charge 30 seconds to reach that depth.

The quote above posted by Sailor Steve in a another topic got me thinking, are different types of ship dropped depth charges modelled in SH3/GWX or is only one type modelled? Doing some arithmatic, the sink rate quoted by Sailor Steve is 2.33 m/s for the later war depth charge. I think I read here some time ago that the the sink rate is 3 m/s for all ship dropped DC's. Can anyone clarify?

There was a depth charge mod several years ago which had a 3 m/s sink rate early in the war and 6 m/s later on. I've looked through my files and can't find it, but that may only mean that I just forgot where I put it.

GWX or NYGM may reflect those rates, but I'm not sure if the game allows for changing sink rates or if you would have to change it manually. I suspect the latter, and I think you had to do it yourself with the old mod. SH3 Commander should make it possible to change the files by date, but until I find the old mod I have no way of testing it.

I think so. I noticed that depth charges went faster. I always thought it was just because of Type II earlier in the war and that it was faster because my later boats were bigger.

You can do that yourself. I tweaked it to 6m/s (DepthCharges.sim), mainly for gameplay reasons. 5 or 5.5 would probably be a more realistic value, because there were still depthcharges being used that had a lower sinkrate. If ur using a mod that gives the AI unrealisticly good ASDIC, I would choose a value of around 4.

Usually I start my carreers at 1942 or 1943.

Mark VII Heavy: 5.1 meters per second
Mark X: 1.8 meters per second (this type had a 2,000 pound charge)
Mark X*: 6.1 meters per second
Hedgehog: 6.7 to 7.2 meters per second
Squid: 13.3 meters per second

American depth charges:
Mark 6: 2.4 meters per second
Mark 7: 2.7 meters per second (later models with reduced charge and lead weight 4.0 meters per second)
Mark 8: 3.5 meters per second
Mark 9: 6.9 meters per second

Thanks for the replies and technical info. So 2.4 m/s is the sink rate setting for DC's in GWX. That's what I was looking for.
