Good evening.
Due to problems I had to un-install SH III on my vista laptop.
My previous install was on my Program Files (x86) folder, which I now find out is not the preferred place due to conflicts.
So During my install attemtp tonight I created a "Program Files\Ubisoft\SH III\" folder as to try and eliminate these potential conflicts.
Of course the defalt installation is the Program Files (x86) destination.
So after I checked my install as I am preparing to install the patch, I checked my hard drive to ensure I have everything the way it needs to be.
Come to find out the regular Program Files folder is empty, and SH III went ahead and installed to the Program Files (x86) folder anyway, despite my changing the destination to the regular Program Files folder.
Can someone SMARTER than me who is familiar with Vista help me get this problem solved? I'm having severe withdrawls....
Thank you.
Yes I am aware there is a Vista "sticky" for this and I am still having issues, so I am trying to get some help from people that have had to "fight with" Vista to play.
Untill I had issues with MODS ( causing CTD) and thus the uninstall/re-installs. I had no previous issues runining the game using my Program Files (x86) folder.

I never had to fight, but I thought of this:
have you tried moving the whole file (after installation) to your program files/ubi folder? (cut and paste, brother!)
I wound up doing that to move my game from my current box to my more current box, because the other had a hard time understanding the installation instructions:har:

Well I have a clean re-install of SH III on my machine, but get a CTD when I run the program. It gets 95+ % of the way loaded and then I get the CTD.
I have tried BOTH exe files, as I did as suggested above and "cut and paste" into my Non (x86) program files folder.
In the Program Files\Ubi\SH III\ exe I get a CTD
In the Program Files (x86)\Ubi\SH III\ exe I get a CTD.
I have not installed any mods or even GWX 3.0 at this point. I have installed the 4gig patch, (I think) as I can't get the exe to run. The install program "said" that it was installed, but again since I can't get it to run, I am not sure.

are there any computer experts out there that know Vista very well?
Could my current problems be the cause of a registry error, that needs to be addressed to cause my CTD issues?
Thank you.

I have Vista aswell. I would try again to do a clean install directly to C drive. If that doesn't work, than move the SHIII folder to C. Install 1.4 patch, get the fixed exe from the internet. Right click SH3.exe and run it as administrator (and XP compability if you have to)
-turn off windows defender
-don't install the 4gig patch unless you get SHIII running first, because that might cause the problem... (Do you have 64bit OS anyway?)
Good luck!

SquareSteelBar did a nice uninstaller that you should use.
Then re-install but DO NOT name it programs anything.
I'd install to a folder called SH3 or something like that.
As a side note?
I might be in White Lake in a few days.
I can offer on-site personal assistance if you need it should I travel up there.

I don't know how useful this might be to those of you trying to run a clean install, but on my Windows 7 machine I set the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service pack 2 and ticked the box marked run as administrator. You can get these options by right clicking on the SH3 icon, going to the bottom of the menu that opens and left click on Properties, then the compatibility tab and select the options. Worked for me! :)

I don't even use those options on my Windows 7 install.
My install path is D:\SH3

Nutworld had the right idea, except he didn't follow through completely on it. Avoid the "Program Files" folder if the (game) files in it are likely to be changed. (Like modding)

I never install into program files, instead I have a dedicated games folder with each genre its own file within that. As for the compatibility options, SH III wouldn't work on my machine without them. I have an AMD "Bulldozer" PC though, so maybe that has something to do with it. Anyways it works and that's the main thing. :)

Thanks to everyone for your help. With a little assistance from everyone, basically who replied in this thread I have SH III back up and running on my Vista Laptop.
Can't wait to get my XP machine back up and running too.
Privateer, thanks to your suggestion of the uninstaller from SquareSteelBar I have a fresh install operating.
I am slowly getting all the MODS added and will be starting a new career in the next week.
I saw that one of the people on Subsiim, has a link to his "soup" of Mods...since I am quite sure that not everyone is running the same ones, would some of you mind posting what mods you are using and the order that you install them using JSGME?? Just so I can get an idea of what order mine need to be in.
Thanks again for everyone's help.

I guess this means you don't need me to visit when in White Lake?
:hmm2:
Just glad you're sorted out Mate.

Privateer, no I don't NEED a visit, but let me know when you get up this way, maybe we can catch a drink and trade "war stories".
Glad I am sorted out as well. Just got dive bombed with Depth Charges on Sep 8, 1939. Seem to be surviving.
