Please let this be a hoax. (http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/michelle-obama-sponsors-submarine-uss-illinois_645946.html)

The White House announced today that First Lady Michelle Obama will sponsor the USS Illinois, the first all female submarine force. The newest submarine "is expected to join the fleet in late 2015," according to the White House.

I'm not averse to women serving on submarines. If they can do the job, and everyone around them can be adults, more power to them. I'm secretly hoping my youngest will follow in her daddy's footsteps, in fact.
But THIS is a bad idea, which I doubt will survive the Obama administration.

At this point, no US submarine is off-limits to female officers once they complete the requisite training, so no argument can be made for an all female crew based on exclusion.

There is a gender bias issue which will be brought to the Pentagon's attention.

Most importantly, there is no submarine qualified female who can currently meet submarine command criteria. Sub skippers usually serve from 4 to 6 tours on various boats with a few shore tours thrown in and command school previous to assuming an XO berth.

Once an acceptional female has worked her way up the ranks the right way, fine. Just do not cut corners in the name of political correctness.
In a very real sense, people could be killed.

Where does it say the USS Illinois will be crewed entirely by females?

Here's what I read:

I'm sorry about that. But I knew that this movie could be seen on youtube.
And when you wrote about it-operation Petticoat-I thought why not post a link to the movie. So people can see it if they want and read the article.

The article has been changed:
UPDATE: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that there are no plans to make the USS Illinois an all female submarine.

Oh, not a problem. I appreciate the effort. I really should have explained the reference.

I'm glad Mr. Halpern editted the post. I had an email all ready to go to various folks in Washington, and elsewhere, if it turned out to be true.

Now that the emergency has turned out to be a false alarm, would you mind sharing that E-mail?:)

Would have set the record for the ship with the most plumbing problems ever I bet. :D

I was wondering about the biohazard created by TDUing the feminine hygene products.

For those who do not know, the TDU is an extremely powerful trash compactor. Almost all ship's garbage generated at sea exits the ship through it.

The TDU space would look like a scene from a slasher flick.
