Just a question about how people might take on large convoys or task forces. It's never really been an issue before, but now I'm trying to take on groups such the Midway IJN task force on the quick mission I'm running out of torpedoes in the tubes before I've slaked my thirst for sinking ships. I'm on silent running from start to finish, so they're not reloading...should I not be?

Thanks!

Convoy's, go deep to reload. Big Task Force naval battles, don't worry about running silent. Just load and fire. If you've got American and Nip carriers, battleships, etc. duking it out, chances are you're going to have the advantage silent or not. I've played the Battle off Samar single mission and sunk the Yamato before any AI ships realized there was anything below the surface, and if they shifted focus on me they got pummeled by American surface ships. Lone Task Forces, when you have no support, again, go deep to reload. Early in the war, Japan only set their depth charges 150 feet because they didn't think American Subs could go deeper than that. Computer AI is a little different than history, but if you have TMO running, I've taken my boat well below 550 feet! Just go deep and reload! If you run out of internal torps, track the convoy, surface fleet, etc. Get a general idea of what direction they are headed. Evade until barely within or out of sight, run parallel, get ahead, dive again. Wash rinse repeat.

Correct, they will NOT reload at silent running, reloading makes a lot of noise.

Er, I'll add a lil.

How serious are you, do you love your crew and boat, don't save before battle, play realistic.......or do you go nuts, save, die and reload and keep doing so until you get the score you want.....either is fine.

Ships in the area on the surface, enemy or not, don't effect the AI from hearing you, so don't feel safe because ships are duking it out. DD's and planes will attack you by default before they attack anything else.

In game depth charges drop much further than they did historically, mods vary, but if you're running TMO charges come looking for you as far as you can dive.

You have to be the judge of reloading, what are other factors helping or hurting you, mainly waves, thermal layers. If you have heavy seas, that factor helps more than silent running, usually u can load away.

Are you being pinged, if so, they have you, silent running doesn't matter, the game only uses one sensor at a time.

As you play you're gonna run into many situations where you pull off an attack and need to reload, you'll have to decide is it worth the risk based on numerous factors, including your evasion tactics, fairly easy to avoid charges if you know what you're doing.

Really!? This whole time I thought I was Captain America and I was just getting lucky!!!! That's kinda sobering! Lol. Cause it seems like in those single missions that the enemy isnt paying any attention to me at all. Planes, DD's, nothing...

They do, yes, though at a steep depth you have plenty of time to maneuver before the charges erupt.

Thanks guys! Yes, I play save-attack-improve - I reckon I learn more that way. Does anybody have any data on how long it takes (realistic) to reload torps? I guess it depends on your Torp. room team?

A good crew could have the tube reloaded in 10 to 20 minutes each.

Much depends on the mods you use, how they adjust sensors and set crew ratings. I think the largest factor that will protect you is sea state, you can almost operate at will in heavy seas. Just know many escorts even in the best mods have lower crew ratings, it's only when the get veteran status do they become more dangerous. I've even set many of my escorts to elite status and they hunt you like dogs, coming in from all angles and seem to know where to throw charges.

Yep, using speed and depth you can avoid most charges, something that bothers me about the game, I prefer a more realistic setup, but still can't find the perfect settings. In game the AI basically makes a run dropping on top of you, easy to outrun them in the depths, in real life a escort captain could better judge your speed.
