Good day everyone.
After a lenghty absense from playing SH III with GWX (gold), I am back and have started a new career.
I know there are many experienced sailors out there who have done numerous careers.
I'm curious what Tools- for lack of a better word, do you use as you are running a patrol.
I guess I'm asking if you have paper, pencil and other writing instruments handy to mark and track contacts, etc.
I'm not ready to play the game at 100% realism, but I'd like to be more successful than I have in my previous attempts at this wonderful simulation.
What do you use when on a patrol? Other than lots of coffee.
Thank you for your help, and good luck.

Well,I use a magazine,or my iPhone(for really long patrols),or just the plain old gramophone.
I use some paper and a pencil to detail my patrol log in SH3 Commander, and well, that's all,you don't really need all the equipment the U-bootfahrers had, unless you're REALLY into it.

Thanks for the reply Frenchy. I was just curious if I was "bat-crap crazy" to try and plot a few things out on paper during my patrol. Or if others are doing that same sort of thing.
Can you imagine the looks you'd get if you were to be able to go back to 1940 with an iPad or iPhone??
"yes, I can listen to music on this, and call people" no wires.

I keep a written logbook of my patrols, and go into SH3 Commander at the end of my patrols to type up the final version of it before posting it. I used to use one of those dry erase board plotters, but can't seem to find it :wah:. Made my life so much easier!

You mentioned the most important one : Coffee!
Other than that , I am keeping a written log of my patrol to keep me busy as I am not using more than 128 TC.
Oh , since I am not very fond of saving and reloading during a patrol , I leave the PC running until the patrol is finished. This might take many days of R/L.
Some times I pause the game and l take a look in Subsim SH3 forums.
All the above that place when I have time to play! :DL

I've got SH IV and SH V, but with the GWX and other mods installed, for some reason, SH III seems to be the one that keeps my attention and that I ENJOY the most. So you are totally correct, "back to the best" it is.

I track any contacts that interest me on-screen. I do use pen and paper to keep a running log of all events which I type up in WordPad when I get the time, including a full position and weather report at the same time every day.

I never tried making real patrol reports but I like having some paper to keep a log of my contacts. Then a calculator may be useful.
I sometimes do more plotting on paper and I find it gives a great feeling of authenticity. That's the way I learned maneuvering board. The only problem is that I only could print the Moboard template on standard A4 sheets which are too small to be comfortable. If you can have them on a larger format, go for it. Not having that, I later used Aaronsblood MoBo which is an outstanding tool. I often have MoBo on my working netbook (too weak to run any game). This way I have to solve everything in relative plot.
Recently I started a (paper) notepad where I'd write down useful things, a kind of my personal and handy "bag of tricks".

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
You should have no problems with Windows 7, but here is the place to help fix it.

Silent Hunter 3 with GWX3 gold installed is as good as it gets! It might not have the eye candy that Silent Hunter 5 has, but it is much more realistic and you get to play the WHOLE war from Aug 1939 to May 1945.
Why this wasn't possible with SH5 is beyond belief!

Beyond your belief perhaps. They strove for something very ambitious and were not allowed the time or money to see it through. They were forced to limit everything, possibly in the hope of continuing on later, but ended up with less of everything rather than more.
Having watched Ubisoft in operation for more than a decade now, I find it all very easy to believe. :sunny:
