Good evening fellow captains.

I am on my 3rd patrol of 1939, and since Donitz has informed of the impending 'fireworks" -happening soon. I've taken the task of doing some recon of potential targets across the Channel, and today's adventure took me to Dover.

I'm doing a very slow speed periscope depth sortie about 5Km off the front of the harbor. Upon starting to exit, I open up the external camera view as I was submerged and boy there was a suprise.

Good thing I was rigged for silent running, and creeping along at 2 kts.

Pray tell...an armed trawler, a destroyer or are you slightly east of Dover and stumbled into the minefield?

I didn't want to post a "spoiler", but yes I stumbled upon the minefield.

Fortunately, I was able to avoid them going off, and escaped without damage to my boat and crew.

(I tried to take a screen shot, but couldn't.)

I wouldn't worry too much about spoilers around these parts, there are many around these parts who are able to interrogate the files and I often answer queuries about ship locations etc.

jimbuna, I know that this great sim has been out a while, and "most" people on the forums are aware of those hazards, but at the same time, I didn't want to be "THAT GUY" = spoiling a thread.

All I know is that they caught me off guard when I switched to free camera mode and went below the surface.

I have run into more than my fair share of mines in my early GWX days. I make it a habit to periodically check the waters with my observation scope for mines when in England coastal waters.

There are no more spoilers left in sh3, only carrots hung before us to go see ourselves.

I tried to get into dover myself, ended up getting ran over by a large convoy, and due to teh shallows a destroy got to get some nice depth charging practice :dead:

I've been running back and forth through there for years and never knew there was mines till I read it here. I'm not sure I want to go back there anymore now.

Are all the mine fields there from the beginning of the war or do some appear during specific stages of the war?

I see some minefields up above Scotland in blue water. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't blue equal more then 1k meters deep?

If that is the case, wow. I didn't know they had mines that could work at that depth, err I mean to say have a anchor that long.

I know today there is buoys for weather reporting with deep anchors and I guess I never put sea mine anchors with today's deep anchors.

If you were to zoom in to a more detailed scale you'll find there are gradients of depth and iirc the maximum depth is 200 metres.
